Just reading Derek Havens rewind column here and passing on the thought. Guy starts out following a legend and loses his most experienced player right away. I'm sure he has plans to work in more young players, but what a turnaround this year. Smash mouth game of the year vs. Colts and Brady isn't getting touched lately.

Cheers Googe.

Yup. And the defensive line coach (Brendan Daly) too. Both seem to have things going as well as could possibly be expected. Fingers crossed for the next few weeks.

Hopefully he won't let the same old story happen in the playoffs. Line keeps getting better every week.

Gug has done a good job. But we are not out of the woods yet. It is not certain that there is any interior OL depth were an injury to occur.

Neither Marcus nor Cam have demonstrated any facility at G; and Fleming's foot is in a boot. All we can call on is the PS guys, who are marginal at best. But with the early experimentation, at least they have played some snaps.

Plus, Connolly is now dinged up, but we don't know how badly.

Great job Googs you got this line playing like the 80's Hogs in DC. You stayed the course when everyone else was jumping ship.

I'll admit, I was very down on Deguglielmo to start the season, but he's really started to turn things around. I'm still a bit concerned about the regression of Solder but he's been better as of late too.

The Detroit game was one that really concerned me but the guys held up inside and they put together a solid game plan. Here's hoping the line continues to gel towards the play-offs.

I was down on the entire coaching staff after KC. The team hadn't played one good game to that point (the wins were average performances). The KC debacle appears to have sparked something within the staff and the team. Since that performance, they have executed on every level and the team has gone from strength to strength. It's a credit to the staff.

Put me down the Mea Culpa column here also. After those first 4 games and seeing his earlier winter views last summer where he came off as a bit of a self promoter, I thought he was a real negative to the team. Whatever he did in the subsequent weeks has been amazing. Brady threw 53 times against the most formidable front 7 in the NFL last Sunday and was not sacked once.

This OL is performing better than last year's.

MUCH, MUCH better!

The line is playing pretty well but it isn't that much better than last year's etc. Last year only seemed so much worse because Brady only had Edelman last year. Last year's line even had similar results as this one against the same opponents. We ran over the Colts the same way as last year and just like the Afccg we couldn't run the ball on Denver but had much better options to pass to in Gronk, Lafell, and so forth instead of Slater and Collie. With a healthy Gronk, last year's oline is probably not even considered bad.

I will be impressed by Gooch when nobodies come onto the scene and play well or players significantly improve over the season. Devey and Cannon probably both still suck at guard. It's harsh but it is still too early for all of this praise.

Lastly, are we going to start an appreciation thread for every single person related to the Pats? Sheesh.

Most of the linemen are no names. Stork was a 4th rounder. Can other teams' fans name anyone but Solder and maybe Vollmer ?

(If Artrell Hawkins or Reche Caldwell get appreciation threads, it'll be the sign we've gone overboard)

I mean Wendell and Connolly have been around for years and have had success long before Gooch arrived. I honestly have a hard time naming any team's guards unless they are all pro and I watch a lot of football. I just want to see Gooch coach up somebody that isn't a leftover from Scar before I truly give him props.

Sheesh yourself. I agree Brady getting the ball out quicker is a big factor, but Brady and those receivers were on the team from the start of the season too.

If the OLine was struggling but slightly better i wouldn't have bothered, but i thought their performance was so consistently better, and that coach took so much crap and had to follow the best assistant coach of the era, that it was warranted.

Apparently, some other posters did too.

Devil's advocate : is Wendell better now or no ? Some would argue he is improved.

If I didn't give one to Artrell Hawkins, I was remiss. Why wouldn't you appreciate his contribution at DB that year?

Haha. I loved Artrell on the field - but I'm thinking he was up to no good off the field !

I'm sorry. I did come off little too hard.

But on a serious note, don't you dare start an Artrell appreciation thread!!! lol

I thought Gugs sucked at the start of the season. I was wrong. My "former Giants coach" bias led me to be intractable.

Wendell is also a surprise. I figured he was just too light in the seat to play center, never mind guard. Turns out, he was overmatched when he had his head down at center by the better nose tackles in the game. Playing guard he just has to focus on his technique straight up. He's been very solid. Another thing I think really helps the interior three lineman is they all play center and know the looks. The communication with Stork from Wendell and Connolly is apparent and the result s are pretty damned hard to argue with.

This is strictly for on field coaching. If Deguglielmo's running gambling rings or robbing liquor stores, I'll address that in a non appreciation thread for those types of activities.
