Aren't they getting a pretty damn good DE back in a few weeks?
Who knows?
Why not sign Phillips now and if Jones recovers he can come off the bench, even if that makes him the #4 DE?
I'm just not understanding why you wouldn't want a player who is better than what we have.

1) Depth
2) The injury that hasn't happened yet
One thing you have to wonder with Phillips is if he'll play for cheap money. While his skills have greatly declined, he may not want to come back for something that's near vet minimum. I mean, we're talking about a former Pro Bowler here, he may still value himself as much higher than what he's actually worth at this point.

I like the idea of signing him as depth, but not if it means paying him very far above the vet minimum. I'm not sure if he's too fond of the Patriots, either. I feel like I remember when we played SD the week after the spygate game in 07 that he asked a NFL films cameraman if he worked for the NFL or the Pats. It was a long time ago, but some of these guys will hold sour grapes for a long time.

Like Andy stated, who says we couldn't cut a guy from a different position? I'd be okay with him replacing Devey on the roster.

You already have to cut someone from a different position just to get Siliga back on the roster.

Obviously, the team knows far better about Chandler Jones' prognosis than we do.

If it is not good, they might make a move if another player goes down.

But it sounds like you want to improve what they have right now. OK, that's fine, but others may see it as too much micromanaging a situation that is pretty damn great now.

But how do you know Shaun Phillips is a better option than what we have now. He'd be coming into his 3rd system in 10 months. Didn't look like the adjustment to a new system in Tennessee worked out that well.

Okay, well one of Tavon Wilson/Don Jones could go as well. We have an abundance of depth in the secondary, with six corners and six safeties. I'm pretty sure we could manage to cut one of our backup safeties and be just fine.

I'm just saying that Phillips, while he's declined greatly, would be more valuable to this team than than the likes of either Devey, who is quite atrocious, or a sixth safety.

He's probably not going to see the field, especially if Chandler Jones returns. How's that adding greater value? Wilson is a 4 group ST guy who also gets defensive snaps. Jones is also in 4 ST groups, as I recall.

OK, so cut Tavon Wilson when Siliga (who is 24, knows this system and has proven himself in this system) comes back.

Now who do you want to cut for the 33 and 1/2 guy who was just cut by a lousy team and would be entering his 3rd system in 10 months?

You may say Devey, but OL is a far bigger depth worry than DE for this team. The Pats could use ANOTHER OL instead of Devey, not just cutting Devey without a replacement.

Devey is the "free" cut, since he's not an ST maven, and he'd mean slashing the OL down to 8. So, cut Devey for Siliga. That leaves no fat to trim because of special teams, unless you're going to cut Tyms.

My issue is, can either of you really say that our Defensive End depth is very safe either. I'm counting on Chandler Jones coming back, but what happens if he doesn't? Then what? What if someone goes down on top of that? Special teams are very important, but are they more important than depth at DE?

I wouldn't say so.

And as for O-line depth, it's not great by any means, but we at least have the likes of Fleming, Cannon, and Kline who can come in if needed. If say somehow Jones doesn't come back and someone goes down, who's the depth then, want Jake Bequette back on the roster??

Now maybe they do feel confident in Jones returning enough to not make a move like this, I'm just saying it's something definitely worth considering in my opinion.

.
Other than the age, sounds pretty similar to Ayers, does it not? Hell Ayers wasn't even activated by that lousy team!

You can only keep 53. The only "fat" left on the roster is Devey, and they've still got to activate Siliga. Easley is being used at both DT and DE, and Siliga back would make it even easier to put Easley on the outside, if needed.

DT
Wilfork
Branch
Siliga
Chris Jones

DE
Ninkovich
Chandler Jones
Moore
Easley

So you're already working with 8 DL, and that doesn't count Ayers, who's really DL#9.

My point is, are we really thin enough in Special Teams to the point where we cannot afford to cut one of Wilson/Don Jones? I'll admit I don't keep track of who plays what on ST as much as I should, but taking a jab at it:

Slater, Bolden, Casillas, White, Ebner, Jones, Wilson. That would be seven guys who are primarily ST'ers.

How many primarily Special Teams guys do we need exactly?

Sounds like Shaun Phillips is done. Id hate to cut a stud STer for him. Pass rushers decline quick.

He's definitely at least cooked medium well, but hey, who says for sure that he's charred meat?

So the Patriots should weaken their special teams on the off chance that Phillips isn't done, and the off chance that Phillips can have a significant impact as the team's DE6 (behind Ayers)?
