You had to be blind to not see that Phillips played 2-3 times above his normal level last year. The Titans bought high, extremely high.

Will most probably end up back in Denver I assume..

Didn't know he was still in the league.

He started for the Broncos last year and did pretty well (10 sacks), so you probably should :p

He won't come here and we don't need/want him anyway, but there are places where he could be useful if he passes through waivers. I'm sure the Seahawks have made the call already.

I hear ya, but....

Andre Carter 2012 versus Andre Carter 2011?

(I know, I know Carter had the ACL, but Phillips is now 33 and 1/2 - speed rushers go quickly).

Possible, but I doubt it. Ware's tearing it up at his old position and Derek Wolfe is back after missing last year, so he'd have to be okay with being pretty far down the depth chart. There are other teams with much more pressing needs for a guy like him, and I would expect him to go to one of them.

I assume that no one will claim him and his big contract. Then I further assumed that he would be ok taking a veteran minimum contract at a place he is familiar with to boost his stock up and try another FA run at the end of the season.

All of those thoughts are obviously just assumptions. But I am not sure how effective he could be if he joins a new team this late in the season.

Andre Carter 2012 versus Andre Carter 2011?

(I know, I know Carter had the ACL, but at a certain age, speed rushers go quickly).

I'd argue that Andre Carter is evidence of the opposite: that barring a career-altering injury, sometimes a down year in a bad situation is just a down year in a bad situation, and that older pass rushers can frequently lose perceived value faster than they lose actual value. Belichick showed that, if used correctly, Carter still had a lot in the tank at age 33, and Phillips is 33 now.

I do think that Denver overused him last year, and Tennessee tried to this year. He's not an every-down DE anymore. But I'm sure that a team that already has 2 good DEs and just wants to get a strong rotation going would be happy to have him. Look at Seattle; they lost Clemons in FA, and responded by having Michael Bennett play a lot more snaps, which has just made him worse since he no longer has the advantage of being fresh all the time. Without even touching on Red Bryant leaving in FA and Mebane being out for the year (since they play a different position anyway), Seattle's been sorely missing a rotational pass rusher to mix with Bennett all year. Having a surplus of edge rushers also lets you design exotic packages where you have one of your DEs rushing from the interior, which Seattle did a lot with Bennett last year but hasn't really been able to do this year.

Kinda similar to what we saw last year, when Ninkovich and Jones played 95+% of snaps at DE all year, then were gassed when the playoffs came around. You need to have 3-4 guys who can rush the passer from the edge, because it's a position that wears guys out. Both in-game and over the course of the season, having a rotation is a huge advantage. As long as someone like Phillips is only being used for 15-30 plays per game as a rotational guy, he still has value. Not commensurate with what Tennessee paid him, but that's their problem.

Can he rush the passer?

What...somebody had to post it.

Actually Ware, has not played all that well over the last five weeks or so. He is becoming what the Cowboys thought he was. He is just not the same player who can play at a high level for the entire season. He was near invisible against the Pats (other than the one sack which I think was a coverage sack), Chargers, Raiders, and Dolphins. He started out really strong and has really trailed off.

That said, I doubt the Broncos bring him back.

Hey, that's good stuff. Great points. Team chemistry-wise, I kinda like Ayers and Ninko holding down the fort until Chandler gets back, but you illustrated the situation quite nicely there (far better than my wiseacre comment earlier). Thanks for the info.

Shaun Philips is a punk! He would do nothing but disrupt the chemistry of a team that is playing great football here in new England.

(By the way, I have no idea why my font looks like this! Lol!)

Right on, I agree that we don't really need him with Ayers, Moore. and Easley capable of playing outside if needed.. We already have our DE rotation, especially when Jones comes back.

Why wouldn't we want him?
Ayers, a LB is our starting DE and a rookie 6th round pick who has played less than 100 snaps all year is his backup.

IF NEEDED?? Ayers starts and is out of position, Moore is one of the worst 3rd DEs in the league, and Easley is a DT.
