...for Bill Belichick.

QUOTE:

JUST BILL BEING BILL. I may be way off base on this, so feel free to tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about. But there’s something about Bill Belichick’s disciplining of Jonas Gray that rubs me the wrong way. I understand Gray was late for a team meeting, and Belichick certainly had a right to hold him out of the Lions game to teach him a lesson. But I just get the feeling Belichick was looking for any excuse to knock Gray down a notch and show him who’s boss. It’s not like the kid was a spoiled brat, No. 1 overall draft pick. As you pointed out last week in MMQB, he had a long and winding road just to make it on the field against the Colts. He seems plenty humble already. I know Belichick is a great coach and all, but I think in this case he was looking to stroke his own ego and prove to everyone he could win without the guy who rushed for four touchdowns and 201 yards the week before. Thoughts?

—Paul, West Palm Beach, Fla.

That’s an interesting point. You might be right. But I will say this about Belichick and discipline. He’s pretty consistent. Now, if Tom Brady were 10 minutes late, Belichick might bench him for the opening series, but he certainly wouldn’t bench him for the game. So it was easier for him to make an example of Gray especially after signing LeGarrette Blount during the week, because Blount and Gray are very similar backs. Plus, this was a week that the Patriots weren’t going to be running very much. I think the banishment of Gray for a week—unless his relatively mild tardiness is not his only miscue—is a good reason why there are those who really don’t like Belichick, and who feel that at times he’s just too imperious.

Yes, I'm sure the man who's won 3 Super Bowls needs to feed HIS ego by 'banishing' a player two weeks removed from the practice squad. Uh, it's called 'discipline', Peter. Excuse me now, while I slam my head against a wall.

I think the whole thing was orchestrated pretty well from Belichick's standpoint. Keep the kid out of a game that we're not going to run a bunch in anyways and we've already got Blount.

Which will get him extra ready to lay the wood against a team like GB who allows more yards on the ground than most teams in the league which is especially interesting given how many points they've scored meaning a lot of teams are playing catch up and not running the ball in the first place. It's gonna be Indy redux and Gray's going to get a hug from Belichick after he runs the ball.

I am REALLY tired of this story, though.

He was giving him the week off as a reward for the hard work he did before. 36 carries, he needed some rest. His forearms were bloody at the end of the colts game.

King's response wasn't bad. It brought up all the major points like this being a pass heavy gameplan, the presence of Blount, etc. It was the guy who asked the question who was a little looney.

I am REALLY tired of this story, though.

Yeah, I know. But it just pissed me off.

On a completely separate note, the animated GIF in your signature... what the heck IS that?!? It creeps me out every time I see it... like one of those paintings in an old school horror movie with the eyes following you. o_O

Good point. I didn't realize it until you said it, but GB is 30th in the NFL against the rush, giving up 137 yards a game; even after Sunday's beat down, Detroit is still #1 against the rush, giving up 70 yards per game (the pats give up 108 yards per game to the rush, pretty much smack dab in the middle of the two).

I think we can expect a Gray/Blount 1-2 punch with a lot of screens to Vereen out of the backfield. I like the idea of a really motivated Gray and a guy like Blount who feels he just got a "get out of jail free" card smashing into the line. What better way to keep the guy currently ranked as the #1QB in the League off the field and keep the guy who actually IS the #1 QB in the League on the field and looking for Gronk and Edelman and Wright.

Whoa, if Revis and Co. are on their game, it could be a long night for the Packers.

I think the whole 'Gray benched for the whole game' thing is very overrated. Sure he didn't play anything. But we barely used power run. Vereen got the most runs, not to punish Gray, but because we ran more of a spread offense than a power offense. Which Vereen is more suited for than Gray. I'm sure that Gray would have gotten carries if we had met a team that wasn't a very good run D, and we aimed at running the ball a lot.

Yup, I'm sure that was it. It's not like he's proven that he can win without Gray. That's something that he has to show the league.

Seriously though, it didn't even occur to me that he might have been deliberately benched until he started getting shown on the sideline repeatedly with the announcers ranting about it. I thought he was just sitting because the Pats didn't want to run on the top run defense in the NFL, and Blount is also just better than he is.

You could also say that Gray was being held in reserve in case anything happened to Blount or Vereen. That young man got himself fairly well beat up against the Colts, and having him on the sideline was, to me, not a punishment but common sense.

New England, as noted above, wasn't planning to rush anymore than needed to keep the Lions honest in their defense. Thus, it makes sense to rest Gray and use Blount and Vereen, knowing that Gray & Blount might well have a banner day next weekend against Green bay.

Not only that, but I think Gray is better at hitting the hole. He's a little bit quicker than Blount, so if it was a matchup where the OL could dominate the DL, he'd be the better option. But against the Lions, where it's more likely there WON'T be a hole, Blount is better at making something out of nothing for those instances where they do want to run.

maybe they wanted to get blount some reps in an already minimal run heavy game plan ?

Yeah, I know. But it just pissed me off.

Do a Google image search. That should provide you with some information. [I'd say "answer your question," except that I'm not sure that's even possible in this case. :p]

It was pretty obvious that BB kept Gray on the sidelines so as to not hurt Suh's feelings.

Here I go again. I feel like Satan's emissary. I just had to go and research it, didn't I? [hysterical sobbing] Oldrover, forgive me!!!

I wouldn't mind seeing a remake with Raiola, the Pollards etc. in the lead role.

WTF did I just watch?

Except for the little 'this is why some people really don't like him. He's too imperious.' shot at the end.

Yeah, I made that mistake too.

I suspect he didn't even go into the game intending to keep him on the bench the entire time, but with Blount doing well and not that many carries, it just ended up that way.

The whole 'Belichick is arrogant', 'Belichick does X because of his huge ego' is so ridiculous. It's one of those things that has been repeated so often that it's accepted as fact.
