tons of bad news on the mallet front

apparently in his second start, he may have torn his pectoral, and will miss the rest of the year

So not only is a former pat who did everything he was asked to do and was a generally good guy get a devastating injury in his last year of his rookie contract, but the pats hopes of a decent pick go down the drain.

suck for mallet, sucks for the pats, sucks for the texans. no winners here

Ryan Mallett's run as Houston's starting quarterback is on hold.

The Texans passer might have suffered a torn right pectoral muscle before Sunday's 22-13 loss to theCincinnati Bengals during warmups, which would end his season, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport was told by a source informed of the injury.

Set for an MRI on Monday, Mallett aggravated the injury during pregame warmups after showing up on this week's injury report with a strained chest injury. Rapoport was told that Mallett decided to play through the pain after waiting four years for a shot to start.

Gutted for him.

Too bad. This might explain how his mechanics dropped way off from the last game.

The 2016 7th round pick would have become a 6th, which in the grand scheme of things is far less important than Mallett himself.

The Houston newspaper is a bit more optimistic than NFL.com is, thinking that Mallett could return before the season is over. Looks like it depends on the result of today's MRI, to determine whether or not Mallett's pectoral is torn.

On the other hand, even if it isn't torn is it worth it to bring him back and risk re-aggravating the injury for an extended audition for a new contract? With yesterday's loss Houston is now 5-6 and would need to make up two games against multiple teams with just five to play in order to make the playoffs, something that is highly unlikely.

My other question is why Bill O'Brien played Mallett, if the injury was that bad. BOB must really have zero faith in either Fitzpatrick or Savage.

Texans QB Ryan Mallett could miss several weeks due to right pectoral injury - Ultimate Texans

Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett played with an aggravated injury to his right pectoral muscle that hampered his accuracy and velocity in Sunday’s 22-13 loss to Cincinnati.

Depending on the severity of the injury – which could be pulled or torn — Mallett could miss several games, including next week’s game against Tennessee at NRG Stadium. Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was benched in favor of Mallett during Week 11 at Cleveland, could return to the starting lineup.

Mallett’s performance against Cincinnati bore no resemblance to the quarterback who had a terrific game in last week’s 23-7 victory over the Browns, when he threw two touchdown passes and displayed pinpoint accuracy.

Against the Bengals, Mallett was 21-of-45 for 189 yards and no touchdowns. He suffered one interception and had a rating of 49.2.

The difference between 6th and 7th round picks aren't all that great. I feel terrible for Ryan Mallet, but I also wanted him to establish himself as the starting QB so that the Texans would resign him and he wouldn't get picked up by buffalo or the Jets. Same for Hoyer.

Mallett's luck is horrible.. Poor kid.. Finally gets a chance to start and he tears a pec muscle and is done for the year..

My only cheerful thought in the whole thing is that Hoyer had a similar misfortune and has bounced back from it.

I almost hit the dislike button Deus, but, alas, can't shoot the messanger :). Was rooting for him, regardless of the return (although if it was a conditional 2nd or 3rd....). Still sucks for him. I wonder how Andre Johnson's feeling about this.
im pretty sure it was a conditional 6th

This summarizes how Texans fans feel right about now.

Oh, I did know that. I was just saying if it HAD been a high pick like that I probably wouldn't have prefaced my condolences to him with "regardless of the return".

Tough break (or more appropriately tear) for Mallett. Now he will enter free agency as a big unknown. He had plenty of time left this year to prove himself to the Texans. I wonder if BOB brings him back. They drafted the kid Savage, I wonder if they give him a looksee.

The Texans need a QB and there doesn't appear to be any franchise QB's in next years draft after Mariotta (yes, I'm intentionally omitted crapfor brains Winston.) Time to start the Watt for Garapollo speculation?

Unusual injury for a QB isn't it?

Would that be from lifting too much or too often?
