OK - 4 down and 2 to go vs dung this 6 game run against the top QB's and WR's and some of the best Defenses front in the league. And while this was still wasn't perfect, it was the the most complete overall game the Pats have completed in this 7 game run. IIRC is a run against 4 games against division leaders that were essentially blow outs. This has been a run of almost scary impressiveness, .
1. t Very scary that for the rest of the league that the Pats can run over 40 rushes one week and the next week throw the ball over 50 times and still be effective.
2. While the Lions were very effective against the Pats run when they were in 3-4 receiver sets, when the Pats finally came out with 2 TE's and 2 RB's they ran the ball very well despite the fact the Lions stacked the box. in fact I bet when the stats finally come out, we will find that they ran most of their 90 odd rushing yds with 2 RB formations.
3. That's was also impressive, especially after a very bad first half rushing the ball. It shows us that even against good rushing D's, when the Pats put their mind to rushing the ball against stacked defenses they can still move the ball. that will be important come the playoffs.
4. I'm not one who likes to talk about the refs, but for 3 quarters, these guys were the main reason the Lions scored any points and why the Pats were stopped on offense, especially in the first half. Too many of the Pats 9 accepted penalties were marginal at best, the Lions seemed to be given free reign to tackle and hold Pats receivers down field.
5. That being said, Edelman's TD run back WAS the result of a penalty, Too bad, it was another great run by Edelman. Also, though Gronk was clearly held(tackled) on Brady's pick, that was still a nice pick by Ihedibu (from UMASS)....and a Brady will probably look at it as a bad decision on his part. In the fourth it looked like the refs finally started to call a few against the Lions just so they might look respectable. As it was both the yard and penalties were still lopsided even in the end (9/59 vs 11 for 94)
6. I'm am very confident that Jonas Gray is never going to be late for practice again.
7. Blount was both effective and efficient. Clearly he is going to be an asset for this teams
8. Hard to believe that the Pats have added Branch, Casillas, Ayers and Wright AFTER TC None of them are all stars, but been effective contributors as back ups. Cassillas had one key tackle in coverage today. Its a good job when you can pick up one guy that late, let one 4.
9. Tom Brady dropped back 53 times and against what is arguably the best DL in the league, there were ZERO sacks, I'm guessing about 5 hits and about 5 hurries. Brady was completing 72 % of his passes for over 350 yds. This was and OUTSTANDING job by the OL gain in pass protection.
Think about it. IIRC, the Pats had 10 sacks in the first 4 game, and have allowed just 4 in the last 7, despite going against some of the best pass rushing D's in the league.
10. I thought Brady was good today, but not was at his most accurate. Even some of his catches were not "in stride" so the Pats lost some YAC. He also missed a few guys who were open, IIRC Vareen, Edelman, and Lafell, plus had a bad drop by Gronk. Again this means to be that the Pats can still be a dominant offense when Brady is playing "merely" good (though its hard to wrap your head around a 70% completion rate as being "merely good". ). It must be horrifying for opponents' DC's to think about what it might be like trying to stop Brady on a night were he's hot.
11. Think about this for a second. Right now the Pats have 15 TD's scored by their TE's. It is probably very likely that the Pats will wind up with over 20 for this position. So far Tim Wright does nothing more than catch just about EVERYTHING that's thrown to him. There is no question in my mind that over the next few years Wright will become an important member of the Pats receiving corps. For now, I'm satisfied that he's proving to be a red zone offense pass specialists.
12. If you happened to watch the Denver Miami game, I can over simplify it by saying the key 1difference between the Dolphins and Pats was their tackling on the short passing game. I'll be interested to compare the YAC vs those 2 teams for this game. I'd bet there was a HUGE dumber difference
BTW - Bronco's invested a hugh chunk of money in their defense this year, and the results seem like its getting worse, while on the other side, the Pats D, seems to be getting better
13. It can be argued the the 2 key plays in the game came from special teams. Not only did Allen handle a bad snap, he completely turned around the field position with a 63 yd punt....that had a minimal return. Spectacular coverage, btw especially given how long that punt was. Equally important was Amendola's 80 retun that set up a big score.
14. As I expected the Pats put Revis on Tate and had Browner, bracketing Megatron. Though I it should be noted that the Pats switched the 2 from time to time as well as playing both zone and press man. IMHO, this was was Browner]s best game. Even his penalties were better.
15 Pretty scary that we can honestly say that Pat Chunk was excellent in coverage as well as being a key run stopper. THISen is the consistent all round kind of performance I expeced to see form Chung after the 2011 season from. Patrick Chung. We forget just how good he was at the end of the 2011 season
Clearly he regressed in 2012 and was allowed to to to Philly in 2013, and since that time, he's been a major whipping boy over those 2 years. Now I don't know what caused the change in his play (coaching and maturity I guess), but he's been more than what we could have hoped to get ge was signed as what most thought was an after thought in the off season.
16. Good that Dennard was active. I'm not sure how much he played, but its a start. He can be important depth if anything happens to Arrington.....who also has another notable game.
17. Right now there is no team playing better football against better opponents in this league. Looks like the Packers will be the best game of the six. I know when this 6 game started I would have been thrilled with 4 -2 for this difficult stretch, even 3-3 would have been acceptable. Now 4 games , and the media is ready to anoint them as sure fire 6-0. . This is going to be a great. I'm looking toward it
