Blount Signs with Pats (2yr deal)

Blount at practice. We may see him this Sunday after all.

Yep, the whole season-long IR system was the result of trying to prevent illegal stashing of healthy players on IR. The NFL has made various efforts over the years to police this, e.g.:

http://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/08/s...all-nfl-looks-into-injured-reserve-lists.html

That's not to say there aren't abuses of the system, but IR'ing healthy players is not allowed.

Right. There is a big difference between breaking a rule and being able to be caught breaking it.

LOL thats pretty funny. Wonder if he would be cheering for those players if pats played the steelers earlier this year. My guess is YES

My 16 year old son is very happy with this move, if for nothing else than he finds the Blount TD song they play at the stadium hilarious.

We probably wanted to re-sign him in the offseason but not at the price he wanted. Now I assume we're getting him for pennies on the dollar.

Umm, the part that says players can go on IR if they are not able to play due to injury clearly says that you have to be injured and unable to play.

...and in the case that the team was audited by the league, they would have to substantiate that a player was injured and the IR designation was appropriate. In addition, the player and team doctor would need to corroborate with the team that he was in fact "injured".

None of this is in the CBA.

Huh?
The first part says that you understand that you cannot IR a healthy player.
The second part confuses me because the way I read it you and Patchick referenced a section that says a player can be put on IR if he is unable to play due to injury.

Are you simply arguing that it is a rule violation but not a rule listed in the CBA?

I don't think you understood the point of my post at all. Had you read the follow up post I made, you might get a better sense for what I'm saying. Your above reaction makes no sense with respect to the point I'm making.

Which point would that be? That the Patriots "waited" until Thursday to sign a back-up RB who may or may not see the field on Sunday? Or that you think it was some ploy by the Patriots to throw a monkey-wrench into the Detroit Coaches' game planning?

My response deals directly with your inability to understand how things work in the NFL. The Patriots "waited until Thursday" to sign Blount because they didn't have a choice. Not because of some nefarious plan to screw with the Detroit Coaching staff. Furthermore, it's unlikely that the Detroit Coaching staff would GAME PLAN for the #3 RB on the team. A guy who was just signed. You game plan, defensively, for the Passing Game with the likes of Tom Brady with his receiving corps of Lafell, Gronkowski, Edelman, and Vereen. You gameplan for the running game for Jonas Gray and Vereen with the Pats using their Jumbo formation..

That is what I said originally and that is what I am saying again. In both cases, it applies and blows your "point" out of the water for being ridiculous and not thought out.

According to what league rule?

Certainly according to the link you posted. It explicitly states that IR is only for injured players, though it wasn't a link to the code so there is no way to point at a line and say, "Right there! Rule 14.B section 3(a)!"

According to what league rule?
According to the NFL Constitution and By-laws. It's been that way for years..

Editted to show the correct document...

Blount can likely help the team sure, but he quit on his teammates in Pitt and I wish the Pats had just left him out to rot. The 'Patriot Way' takes another kick in the mouth. Blount is a bad seed, he had his shot at redemption and pissed it all away. Can't imagine Big Daddy Kraft likes the way this move will sully the Patriot name in the national view.
Actually, Blount exemplifies the "Patriot Way".

Just like Randy Moss, Corey Dillon, Aqib Talib.

Blount is proof that players have to step in line with the Patriot Way and can be very successful and well behaved in New England after having problems everywhere else.

Nab - Why would Ebner go to IR? Ebner was healthy and played in the last game.. Harmon and Wilson have both seen plenty of playing time..

People were saying how white should go to IR but he hasn't had any injury problems (from not playing). Just thought that the candidates that could go down are event and maybe don jones; those guys that have something nagging.

Look, you clearly have some sort of axe to grind. So forgive me if I ignore you completely. I'm done with your trolling caps posts. Take your anger to anger management class.

Hope this doesn't affect Jonas Gray psyche. Hopefully it motivates him even more now that there will be competition at RB, but you never know how adding a new player will change a dynamic.

I hope he keeps the #60 he wore today just because seeing numbers outside of the norm for a certain position is just a bit quirky.

The one thing you can be sure of is the more diverse your team becomes the more difficult it is to stop. one day its gray next its blount whatever works. What do you plan for if your an oponent

Sorry.. I mis-spoke earlier when I said the CBA. It's in the League Constitution and By Laws. Section 17.16. (A)-(F).

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/static/html/careers/pdf/co_.pdf

(F) EVASION. The Commissioner is authorized to take whatever steps he deems necessary to investigate any Reserve/Injured case that he has reason to believe may not have been handled properly by the involved club. If he determines that a club has abused the procedures of Reserve/Injured in order to evade the player limit or for any other reason, he may take appropriate action.

Now, could you please stop with the ridiculousness that teams are allowed to put healthy players on IR.. They aren't.
