Blount Released

No way this makes sense. He *****es he isn't getting the snaps at Pitt, so why would he come here to be rotation to Gray and Vereen??

OK, Belichick runs tandems. The tandem is Gray and Vereen at RB. How many carries have Bolden or White had this entire season?

I do agree that we might consider having Blount being active, if he is the kick returner.

However, I would note that Belichick has favored 2 active RB's this year, plus STer Bolden.
Bolden and White have not gotten carries because they have not performed well when given an opportunity. Gray had one monster game I think his legend is a bit carried away at this point, so I would really hold off on saying that there is no room in a backfield that has Gray.

Can we add him to the practice squad? :p

It's a rhetorical question.

Who cares if he goes to Denver? They wont use him anyway. That would just getting the way of Five head padding his TD stats. Edit: didnt see Sieglos post. Basically the same opinion. ;)

He would add important depth to this team. Him and Gray as a tandem would wear defenses down. I cannot see any reason not to sign him.
I wouldn't be against signing him either. Never said anything against. Just that he is weirdly terible at short yardage runs for such a big guy.

The tandem is not Gray and Vereen. This team basically uses the 3DRB as a separate position.

Reiss lists pros and cons here:

Personally, I am concerned that the team's early favorable assessments of White have tempered quite a bit as he has become a nonfactor, and is much closer to Vereen than Gray in any case. With Boldin strictly a ST guy, and no RB on the PS, that leaves only Gray to shoulder the load as the big guy for the rest of the way (and whoever Bill might have on speed dial). Little margin for error there.

While I do think that Blount is a bit overrated here, I'm obviously for anything that would make the team better, and we could use the depth.

That said, I have a very difficult time seeing how another team like Indy doesn't pounce on him first.

It may be a much more unpopular decision, but I'd consider Ben Tate (who was cut today as well) too.

Hes a non factor because he hasn't played. That does not mean he cannot contribute. if Vereen goes down then either White is activated and/or Bolden isthe 3rd down back (such he was last year when Vereen was out)

Agreed. Clearly they view Gray way ahead of Bolden. That does not mean that they will not give Bolden carries if Gray is hurt. To your point, based on last year, Blount > Bolden.

If Blount didn't wear out his welcome here I can't imagine any reason not to grab him.

He doesn't cost much and they could harmlessly cut a player and open up a roster spot for him.

Blount has some cred here because he ran for close to 800 yards, had some big late-season games, knows the offense and did well at kickoffs.

Tate is a hard runner. I think because he does not know the offense the safer play is Blount

Guys, there are only 9 games left in the season. And, just the game planning odds predict that many of those will feature more pass than run. With Vereen, Gray, Bolden, and White, I'm not sure why Belichick would want to sign another running back. It just doesn't seem like a need.

The Pats will probably want to restock the running back cupboard next year with Ridley (and perhaps Vereen) gone, but an aging dope-smoking, walk off the field, complain about lack of carries doesn't seem like a productive way of addressing that need. It's also not a front burner issue until after the season.

I think it's more likely that someone like the Vikings or Dolphins claim Blount.

What's with all the "backup" nonsense? Belichick runs tandems.
Yeah as good as the kid looks he probably isn't getting 99% of the carries from here on out. Gray and Blount would be a very solid combo if Gray isn't a one hit wonder.

OK, then who is the tandem that Belichick has chose to run this year.

When Ridley was healthy, Ridley and Vereen (3rd down RB) got almost all the reps. Since Ridly was injured, it Gray and Vereen.

Apparently, thus far in 2014, Belichick has chosen not to run a tandem. Belichick certainly had opportunities before the season started and since to add an additional running back. He has "settled" for 1 RB, 1 3rd down RB, 1 FB, 1 STer who is available if there is an injury, and one inactive rookie.

He hasn't been able to run a tandem this year. He gambled on White, and White hasn't been ready. However, as you know, this team's been running tandems at RB since 2006.

Blount is the type of guy weve seen before. A great success in NE and a disappointment somewhere else. I think resigning the guy for a reasonable contract is a good move. We lost Ridley but Blount proved he can make plays with this offense. Him combined with Gray could be effective. I'd take it. Next year I'd have Ridley on a cheap, prove it one year contract and hopefully Gray MAY be a longer term option (very early to decide). For a team that doesn't over value the position draft wise, is a logical move. Yet that still means Gray has to prove something. I think it is reasonable to give Vereen what he is looking for and a one year Ridley contract. If Ridley didn't have that injury I think he'd be gone but interestingly after that injury I think he will be back with a good rehab.
