Rob did a wonderful job in his game summation. I will try and add some of my own thoughts without being TOO redundant....though it will be hard.

1. I think we all thought that this was going to be a very good team at the start of the year. I also think we were caught off guard by the start we had. The loss in KC had to be among the top 3 of the BB era. And given the Miami loss and how unimpressive the 2 wins were, there was plenty of evidence to give the "chicken little's" plenty of talking points. Not only that, there was plenty of evidence to worry the crap out of those of us who are usually very optimistic.

2....And then came the 5 game win streak. Not only where they wins, they were IMPRESSIVE wins. But they all came with the dreaded, "BUT". "But the defense was unimpressive". "But the run game sucked" "But the most of wins were at home". Clearly things were on the upswing. Brady was playing lights out. Gronk was back to being a force of nature. Browner was starting to do more than being a penalty machine. The OL was improving, etc.

3. Yes things were good, but something was missing. And that was the signature win on the road against a good team.....and we got it.....in spades. The team "legitimized" their status as being one of a number of good teams at the top of the league.....at this moment. Keep that in mind because we've seen several "legitimately good" teams go from the penthouse to the outhouse within a couple of weeks, so BB and his fans should remain focused "on the next game", or what we've saw in St. Louis could easily happen to the Pats over the next 3 games ( 2 of which are on the road).

4. What impressed me most about the emergence of Jonas Gray was his marked improvement. This kid did a lot more than hit the hole hard and take advantage of the good OL blocking. Tonight he showed he had some "wiggle" in him. He made a lot of small cuts and reads to maximize the yardage available. Things none of us had seen in his first few attempts over the last few games, when all we saw was a kid running as hard as he could into a designated spot and taking what was there. BTW, I would have been happy with that, so the skill level I saw by Gray was both surprising and gratifying.

5. The thing I liked most about this game, was the thing I liked most about the last one. They won IMPRESSIVELY and still didn't play their best. Lots of room to improve and clean up.

6. The OL pass protection was not perfect, but it was good enough. Playing on the road and in a dome is a huge advantage to the DL. And because of the overwhelming success of the run game, I felt that Brady should have had a bit more time to throw the ball. That was a completely a dumbassed and inappropriate throw by Brady at the end of the half. All QB's have made bad throws, especially if you have a long career, but THIS one has to be in Brady's top 5 bad throws. But it might have been a completion if there hadn't been a huge breakdown in pass protection that forced Brady to throw off his back foot. The OL can get better.

BTW- could it be that Flemming has moved past my personal binky, Marcus Cannon on the depth chart? Too bad he was hurt. It looks like it might be one of those 2-3 week injuries, so Marcus should have a chance to get back into Goog's good graces. Nice to see Flemming coming along nicely.

7. This was NOT one of Brady's best nights. Not only did he have the other pick (also thrown under pressure), I also thought he missed a few other throws that you would have thought he'd make in a dome. Granted he had some great throws, like the ones to Lafell, but all in all, this was not one of his better games. The good news is that we proved we don't need Tom to be playing at his best in order to win a big game. Brady CAN carry this team, but its comforting to know that he doesn't HAVE to. Even the QB can get better.

8. I thought Rob was too harsh to Browner. Fleener (who had a career night) caught a large portion of his yardage when the Pats were in zone. Unfortunately the catch which sticks in our minds what the one where Fleener avoided the contact at the LOS and beat Browner for a big gain. That's going to happen to Browner if he misses his chip at the LOS. Its going to happen and we should get used to it. It's just part of the good and bad of Brandon Browner, He's going to get beaten on occasion.

9. I hope someone asks BB what happened on the long catch to Wayne in the first quarter. Revis looked like he let Wayne go like some zone, while the S looked like he he thought Revis had him. I guess it was one of those "miscommunications" we hear so much about ;)

10. The Pass rush was sporadic at best. but there were a few good moments. Easley had a few hurries and big QB hit, Hightower and Collins had some successful blitzes, and Ninko got his share of pressures. Clearly the Pats put keeping Luck in the pocket a higher priority than sacking him. Not surprisingly, THAT was the correct strategy.

Luck's greatest success with Hilton often comes often when He is extending plays, very much like Sanders and Brown have with Rothlessberger. The end result was that Luck never got out of the pocket without someone hard on him, and TY never had a big play. The good news on the pass rush has 2 parts. One Patricia has proven he can create pressure with creative blitzes without giving up much on coverage, and secondly, (and continuing the theme), we can expect the pass rush to improve when both Silga and Jones return to the line up in December.

11. My admiration of this coaching staff continues to grow, though its hard to believe it could get any higher. Their greatest asset is that even after 14 years, they still have the ability to surprise me. I'd be willing to speculate that most of us thought that BB would attack the obvious weakness of the Colts D (LB's and S's) in the passing game. I thought this would be the game Wright were emerge again.

Instead the Pats spotted the weakness on the DL and weren't going to stop ramming the ball down their throats until the Colts proved they could stop it, and they never did. Great scheming by Josh and Googs. Great execution by the team.

12. The end short term results of this game, is that the games against the Lions and SD go from being winnable to being games we should expect to win, and the Game against the Packers goes from being a likely loss to now being winnable. I am really looking forward to that Packer game in two weeks, it has the makings of being a classic.

13, .......and, oh yeah, that #87 guy? He's good.

Jeff Howe has been saying on twitter that he asked this in the locker room interviews and believes that it wasn't down to Revis but that there was a blown coverage behind him. Howe, in working out the coverage stats has taken this completion off Revis' responsibilities.

FWIW

Definitely agree with this point. I also was expecting Gray to just hit the holes and take what's there, and would've been happy with that. Seeing him repeatedly make the small movements to get that little bit of extra yardage and maximize his runs (something I feel Ridley was excellent at) was really pleasing and surprising. Didn't know he had it in him.

I think when discussing Brady's performance this game you should divide it into halves. He sucked in the first half, and was near flawless in the 2nd.

I find it encouraging that the Pats can finish a half up by 4 where Brady throws 2 bad picks on the road against a playoff team.

I think the big difference in Gray this week is that he is completely trusting his linemen, listening to their feedback. In a post game interview, he talked about how through the game the OL kept picking him up, encouraging him and giving him tips. I don't think I've seen an OL so behind a Pats runner since BJGE's 1000 yard season.

Brady did have a poor first half, but instead of continuing this he played immensely better in the second half, there have been games in the past where he just shyt the bed.. but last night his recovery was remarkable. Credit to his mental maturity, that he moved on and played lights out. Josh and he developed a great game plan and the whole O executed well.

When I watch other teams play it is often painful, particularly as it relates to clock management.. time after time those teams do not even pay attention to the clock or do not know how to use it, while this team has a second sense when it comes to this.. we have come too used to this prowess often take it for granted.

The game plan by Matt Patricia was brilliant, to have limited TY Hilton while shutting down their rushing game was significant... Time of possession Patriots 34:21 Colts 25:39, keeping the ball out of the hands of Luck, sound familiar.

Second half Time of Possession... Patriots 19:25 Colts 10:35 that is impressive in their house.

There were 4 things I DON'T expect to improve on in the coming weeks:

1. The run defense - It looks like we are fast turning a weakness into a strength as the season goes on.

2. ILB play - Its going to take a lot to see improvement in the play of Hightower and Collins. Both are playing at such a high level right now. IIRC, Collins made at least 2 key tackles in coverage keeping the Colts from moving the chains

3. 3rd down conversion rate - Its hard to think the Pats can improve on the 75% 3rd down conversion rate they executed last night. That stat would be impressive on its own, but when you consider the fact that prior to last night, the Colts' defense led the league in that category, shows you just how good this offense can be.

4. Gronk - Is it possible that there is even ANOTHER level to Gronk's greatness???? Just like it irritates me when Brady is mentioned in the same breath as Manning; I hate it when Jimmy Graham, is compared to Gronk like they are equals as TE's

even though it worked I hated how we went back to the pass at the end of the game. Brady had to make a couple of difficult throws to LaFell and the PA to Wright in the end zone was a bit dangerous. Would have liked to run it more and not give Luck a chance but overall very solid game plan by McDaniels. Hopefully Brady's inner Brett Favre represses itself for the rest of the season.

i read elsewhere that in terms of QB rating, Brady's 2nd half performance was perfect.

To be fair to Browner, Fleener's best catch was on a blatant push off that should have been OPI.

Fleener made a great catch and got both feet in, but it is tough to stop when the receiver shoves the defender in the back with two hands.

The 2nd INT was a touchdown to Gronk if the OL blocks better. He was wide open with nobody in between him and 6. But it never should've been an INT and ranks as Brady's dumbest throw since he threw it off the ground for an INT vs Miami in 04.

Same exact thing on the Tyms play. Poor blocking cost us a TD. Bad decision making by Brady led to an INT.

Gotta clean that up. Brady needs to be more patient there, unlike him to be so cavalier. Realistically you aren't going to block their guys every time, you can't just throw it up because a skill player got behind the defense.

Brady Manny nailed it. Both of the INTs could have been TDs with good blocking. If the blocking sucks Tom needs to either throw the ball away or eat the sack but you can't just Jay-Cutler-it and hope for the best.

I think when discussing Brady's performance this game you should divide it into halves. He sucked in the first half, and was near flawless in the 2nd.

The first Int, as far as Ints go, was one of the more harmless kind. Int on a bomb at the opponents 5, which is like a good punt. That is, if you're punting on 3rd down for some inexplicable reason.

Excellent point.

And did you see what occurred on the field after Gray's last carry? He hit it for a first down - - it went for about 7 yards or so to bring him to 199. Methinks (tho' they will all deny it vociferously) that the team knew he had about 8 yards to go for 200 and the guys on the field initially thought that run did it. They were all over him high fiving and celebrating that run. I know it was a first down and allowed Jimmy G to run the next few as kneels, but something else looked up at that moment to me.

I won't speak to that, but Gray's ability to get first downs when the defense was expecting it at that point of the game could be huge in future games. Nothing worse than going three and out when trying to run the clock out for a win. That was a big thing for me last night.

Sorry, at the time I didn't see that as harmless. That first half (with the other INT and the stupid Flacco jump ball incomplete on 3rd and 3 to Wright on the sidelines when Brady had ALL DAY to decide) was really Tom Brady with mental rust. Thank goodness he was able to shake it off in the 2nd half (for the most part - - see unecessary 3rd qtr TO with the Indy D in disarray).

Great post, Ken.

Just thought i'd reply to one point - Fleming played his snaps purely as a TE (which is something they did with Solder in the early days to blood him).

Cannon is still the main rotation guy at OT.

That is exactly what went through my mind on that play.

What about building swagger? Check out this Bruschi quote:

The message the New England Patriots sent on prime-time TV last night, to the entire league, is that 'We're not a bunch of pretty boys. You better buckle up when you play us because we will push you when you're down and pick you up and throw you into a TV camera on national TV.' I said this when I played: 'We don't talk, we play. But if you want to talk, we have plenty for you.' Last night, these guys played their hearts out and took the heart out of the Colts and it's still laying there on the field where that camera was.
