I'm excited to see how Mallett does as a starter...

If we gave an AFC team a great QB for just a 7th round pick, I'll actually be pretty pissed.

While I would be somewhat upset about it, the problem is that the Pats simply waited too long. They probably could have gotten more for him if they had traded him immediately after picking Garoppolo.

The fact is, the only way the Patriots were ever going to get anything worthwhile in trade for Mallett is if he'd actually started games and done well - and none of us should be lamenting Brady avoiding injury.

Beyond that, Mallett will now have to sustain - and as there's more tape on him it will more challenging for him

for today he was a complete unknown and that was an advantage

Did they really have a choice, though? Coming from a low-level, all-shotgun college offense, it was far from a sure thing that he'd develop fast enough to be QB2 as a rookie. They had to see him in action.

I thought Mallet managed the game well this week.

Houston ran the ball and mallet took what the defense gave him.

He got greedy on one drive and after the pick, calmed down and stayed within the game plan.

Ironically, he started his career at Michigan and played a couple of games when Chad Henne got hurt in 2007. I remember watching him against PSU. Michigan brings in ****Rod after Lloyd Carr retires and he doesn't see the need for a qb who can throw the ball. Kid transfers to Arkansas. I said draft day that I thought he was better than; Gabbert, Ponder and Locker. I'm glad he never got the chance here(Would have meant an injury to TB12). He came here with a bad reputation. Drug rumors. And was nothing but professional about his situation while backing TB12 up. He didn't show the feel for the position in the limited pre-season time he had here. But, that's just practice. Hope he does well.

Autocorrect can make any post an adventure! ;)

I root for all of TB's backups, but I find myself pulling extra-hard for Mallett, probably for selfish reasons. While he was here I made wild predictions about how he would eventually be a better starter than backup.

Tapatalk on iphone + beer should be something I quit :)

Bill O'Brien called a game like they called for Brady in 2001 after Bledsoe went down. Strong running game with lots of short passes to move the chains. It was the deep ball that was picked off and he looked more comfortable as the game wore on. Wish him well, except when playing NE...

Now the overrating of Mallet begins. Don't get me wrong I'm very happy that Mallet played well but now everyone will start complaining that they didn't get more for Mallet, but I mean come on they weren't going to get a high draft pick for him at any point. Cassel was the starter for a season and got a high second round pick, the 49ers got a conditional second rounder for Smith who had led them to a NFC title game a year earlier. Also this is one game, Mallet could come out next week and throw three picks against the Bengals and get benched for Tom Savage. I hope that Mallet continues to flourish in Houston and makes the Colts sweat but lets not call Mallet a world beater just yet

Absolutely ... rating a QB on their first few games is rather inane ...
Let's see how Mallet does after there's more video on him.

Other than that ... I'm rooting for the guy ...

He did not waste his time here ... he made many kids very happy when not at practice.
I know a lot of players do this but supposedly Mallet did it over and above what's considered normal.
I cannot recall a negative story on him after the draft ... what more can a team ask of a backup
who knows they have absolutely no chance of winning the starter job. In Hoyer and Mallet Belichick made 2 excellent draft decisions.

Yesterday, Mallet topped Brady with a QBR of 81.9 to Tom's 77.3. Mallet's QBR was the fourth best in the NFL. The Pats obviously traded the wrong guy - and Brady might have brought more than a seventh round draft pick.

Mallet has a good sense of humor...LOL.

Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett won the “Brady Backup Bowl” on Sunday, and after the game, he took a page from his old head coach.

“We’re on to Cincinnati, if that sounds familiar,” the quarterback said in his postgame press conference, as the Texans will host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

The line was of course in reference to Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who uttered the now-famous phrase in a press conference after the Patriots were blown out 41-14 by the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4, answering five questions the media threw at him with, “We’re on to Cincinnati.”

You would rather we kept him and got nothing?

And an additional bonus is that Belichick directed where Mallett went rather than had him cut and made a free agent

In other words, do you think the Jets or Bills would be happy to have Mallett right now? Does anyone think they wouldn't have seriously considered signing him?

Houston was probably as ideal of a place for Mallet to have gone for his sake and obviously it was better for the pats than if he had gone to Buffalo who I remember had an interest in acquiring hin

I knew it!!! Belichick has lost it and Kraft is cheap!

Start Garropollo!!

Looking forward, Luck might well become the next big Manning-style competitor. There isn't much in his Division to keep an even artificially good record to compete with, for HFA.

Giving BO'B a QB, which is the only thing the Texans need to transform them into a valid potential Luck Nemesis, is something that the Patriots Brain trust can appreciate, and their Fans don't...Yet.

It be nice if Bottles and the Jaguars were able to do something eventuality too. It's just one game for Mallet but obviously he played pretty well, I hope the Texans can give Indianapolis a scare in that division race and maybe Mallet can get paid at the end of the year too

Is Mallet still in Baltimore?

mod edit: like we don't have enough threads appearing on a daily basis, you had to necro this one for no reason?

mod edit 2: rather than dredging up an ancient thread, spend a minute and go in to your phone's settings so that the "

I always thought Hoyer looked like the better QB, but I'm interested to see Mallett play.
Hoyer had a pretty good run when he won a bunch of games before getting injured, so he at least has a winning record over the course of his career. Mallet hasn't done anything yet, so best of luck to him.
