Am I the only one who thinks he could be very good?

I don't know, but I'm seeing a fair amount of speculation linking Hoyer and O'Brien today. If Mallett is a quality starter, it might not be at the Texans. Still, today should be interesting.

Yeah I read that today also on a few sites. I'm sure that would change if Mallett showed promise.

I think it's pretty much some media guys drawing connections than anything substantial.

I mean everyone scouts everyone. But I'd be surprised if any of the coaches were wasting one minute thinking about Hoyer instead of prepping Mallett. They've got an unscratched lottery ticket there, and it might be a loser, but they should be 100% focused on finding that out first over the rest of the season.

I hope he does good but I'm not really invested in his success. Now Hoyer I'm actively rooting for and by default the Browns. Also rooting for the Browns because of their division mates (could care less either way about the bungles but I hate the other two).

I'm sure O'Brien knows which QB he likes best just as I'm sure he'll prep Mallett as well as possible but that doesn't mean that if he thinks Hoyer is the much better QB that he can covet Hoyer whilst prepping the QB he's got to the best of his ability.

My sense is that he's one of those guys that simply just needs playing time to become comfortable. He has the obvious physical gifts, but never seemed at ease back there on a consistent basis - some additional PT may cure that.

I'm much more emotionally invested in Hoyer.
That said, I wish The Hammah the 2nd best and opine that we should not extrapolate his career from his 1st game.

I always thought Hoyer looked like the better QB, but I'm interested to see Mallett play.

This seems the general mood, and I'm curious why. Both were Patriots for 3 years, worked hard and kept their mouths shut, then were pushed out by a promising rookie.

(FWIW I'm more invested in Mallett's success this year, given the conditional draft pick.)

i hope mallet tears it up!
same with hoyer.

Good point on the draft pick.

I think part of it is how Hoyer looked in games he played here. Hoyer carried himself differently. Lastly all the stupid talk about Mallet for a first or as bad as the #6 pick in the draft while not his fault drove me nuts and I guess I partially hold it again him.

They had an interview with mallet last year during preseason and he was unlivable IMO. Seemed like a dummy. Nothing to do w football, but hyper is the better story (undrafted, beating out first round pick, finally giving Cleveland some Ws)

Ryan Mallett was here 3 years. To me, that tells me that the Pats liked what he did as a player on practice field, in pre-season and also a person enough to keep him around and not cut him like KOC and the countless other backup QBs that rolled through this organization over the years.

I think BB, Caserio and JMD were pretty open with BOB on how the kid has progressed and matured since BOB was OC here during Mallet's first year.

The fact that Foster is not playing today does concern me a little as he won't have a solid threat out of the backfield to hand off/throw to.

I hope he does well. I also hope Hoyer does well too. They wore the Pats uniform and paid their dues as TB's understudy.

Autocorrect can make any post an adventure! ;)

I root for all of TB's backups, but I find myself pulling extra-hard for Mallett, probably for selfish reasons. While he was here I made wild predictions about how he would eventually be a better starter than backup.

And I'm sure Tom Brady is at the top of the list too ;)

I just don't think he can properly evaluate whether Hoyer is better or not because he (along with everyone else) has no clue what Mallett is yet. He needs to find that out before anything else.

Whisenhunt at least knows Locker isn't the answer and Mettenberger hasn't shown anything, so I can understand him starting to daydream. But the Texans have to be super excited to finally start seeing what Mallett can do. It's like Christmas Eve for the Texans; there's no way they're thinking about next year's Christmas.

I think so to. He's a long bomber, needs to get warmed up and comfortable to get the touch and rhythm going.

If we gave an AFC team a great QB for just a 7th round pick, I'll actually be pretty pissed.
