Patriots Twitter promotion goes wrong...

I think it sucks that immaturity was shown by some idiot that may hurt others, and I think it sucks that the story gained attention to begin with.

As @TheBostonStraggler stated, we see this crap all the time in various comment sections, and that includes everything from entertainment, to sports and many subjects in between.

Since the Patriots brand will gain more attention than some back page story about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, deadspin will gladly use the opportunity to get some clicks.

Kardashian back page story? I've been seeing this painful entity again flashing across the front pages of some media corners.
If this twitter story becomes a media made up 'outrage', maybe the Patriots would be wise to hire Kardashian to stage some sort of phony scandal with Wilfork or Revis. It surely would wipe away the attention to the twitter "scandal" as well as any pesky stories about Ebola in Africa or QE devaluing the money we have.

A picture of Wilfork's butt perhaps?

Anyone trying to make this a story is kinda sad..this is just a childish kid trying to be funny.

It's kinda lame....#OnToIndy ...

Someone gonna get fired.

Edit: i thought that was randon text. I did not see that was the followers user tag. What were they suppoosed to do... cancel to promo because of the moron. Desubscribe because of it? Not sarcasm, seriously wondering. Not sure what the rigjt choice is.
What they should have done was have someone proof read everything before it was tweeted.

".... we're moving on to Indy"

Funny post on the comments to the story.

This is just like an accident on the highway; all the idiots slow down to stop and stare (or in this case jazz the patriots); but truth is it could have happened to any business using twitter as a marketing tool and it will be gone as a story by tomorrow. There is no one (no reasonable person anyway) who honestly thinks there is anyone at Patriots who concurs with the despicable philosophy represented by "IHateNxxxxx"; so any piling on to the Patriots is just other-team's fans jealousy exposed. Haters are gonna hate.

This one is going straight into the syllabus of every internet marketing course across the country, IMO.

My first thought, like many of you, was "obviously they should have a human proofread and approve the tweets." But they sent out thousands of them at a time, most of which were the unreadable word salad typical of Twitter handles. I suspect a human would have been just as likely to fail as a text filter, if asked to scan thousands of lines of this...

...with the vague target of "anything that could make the company look bad."

That's just a small sampling of the actually Twitter addresses they @ replied to. Here's a tricky one:

That's just a guy's handle from the list. He means it positively, and he's a football fan. OK or not?

The whole promotion, then, might just have been too risky. Which is a shame, because it's pretty darned cool.

Forgive my ignorance on this one but if you have a twitter account and have followers can't you see the followers names? And if you find an offensive name following you can't you block them?

To the point of my early post. Can't you take words that are universally considered offensive, come up with any number of versions using different symbols letters, plug those options into a program that looks for those combinations and if it finds them it modifies the response or doesn't use that twitter name? I get you wont' catch everything but you have to be able to catch most.

First, it's not only Deadpan but mainstream USA today is headlining this story. Love to bash the Pats franchise.

Secondly, corporations cluelessly employ young media hip folks to run their internet accounts without realizing the potential for disaster. Deus beat me to referencing the recent Bill Cosby fiasco.

I wrote about this last night for an entry I posted this morning. The bigger problem lies within Twitter in that the handle shouldn't have existed to begin with. Considering their model centers around advertising and ad revenue, allowing accounts that promote racism and hate is a problem that needs to be addressed. Facebook and Google don't allow it, and Considering they're a publicly traded company it's kind of ridiculous that they don't have something in place to prevent it. You can't control free speech, but you can at least stop the racist and nasty usernames.

But whatever. Thanks to the fact they allow it the Patriots have to take the heat and are being vilified for trying to do something kind of cool for the people who follow them. Well done Twitter.

this is why we can't have nice things.

the owner of that twitter handle should be banned from the internet. They are obviously not mentaly and morally ready to be interacting with millions of people.

My other favorite thing right now are the people calling the Patriots racist while including the racist username within the Tweet they're making the comment in, thereby promoting the racist account.

I see Billy-Bob finally joined the twitterverse.....

Sometimes I'm glad to be alive. Today is one of those days. I wish it was an organization other than my team but sometimes it's just fun to watch a car crash.
I'm going to set up a bot to automatically "like" all of your posts.

(I don't actually know what a bot is.)

I pretty much already do like all of his posts. I'm an fnordcircle groupie.

The responses have been totally ridiculous but they feel it promotes their agenda. Any rational person would understand this organisation (or any other) would never knowingly promote something so obviously socially unacceptable. It is what it is....

They should have had the foresight to see, and made proper arrangements, to stop something like this. Run the thing but know that people are going to have really dumb and possibly offense usernames out there and have a plan to stop yourself from looking bad.

And as @Ian said, the user name should have been caught by Twitter to begin with.

The Kraft Group should hire me to be in charge of the Patriots Twitter account.

You can, but the other issue is that Twitter allows for username changes and they don't alert you to it. So if someone starts out with a normal name and then changes it to something offensive, you're unaware until the user performs an action such as "favorite" or if they "re-tweet" a post. And that's provided you spot the email buried in the dozens that tend to come through.

I'm not a fan of Twitter - but it's a necessary evil in this industry. There are a lot of people out there who are not good people and this has given them an easy platform to wreak havoc, including one account that's Patriots-related and is run by a psychopath. But "it is what it is" and they don't care, as long as their stock and earnings continue to climb they'll turn a blind eye until something eventually happens where they're forced to do something. Although it's sad that being proactive is never the answer, it always takes something bad happening in order to actually spark change.
