The Revis Contract

From Reiss' chat today:

Mike (Providence): Mike - I have to imagine Revis is enjoying the year to this point, experiencing a legit program with consistent success. Maybe the money is his only interest, but it would be tough to go a lower program for more money and a 7-9 record. Agree?

Mike: That's part of my thinking, Mike. I actually think the Patriots would pay him big bucks as long as it's structured in a way to protect them in the event of injury. But if another team goes over the top, we know the Patriots aren't afraid to walk away. I think the key, from my view, is that he's technically still under contract for 2015 even though it's such a high cap figure. So that gives the Patriots, if they so desire, the option to just play out the contract and keep him at the high cap figure as they keep working towards a resolution. That just might be worth it.

It wouldn't completely shock me if that happens, if the Pats can't work out a long term deal. It's one reason they might be keeping their options open in terms of their 2014 cap space, at least in terms of keeping their options open.

I read when we signed him that Revis has already made 80 million dollars since coming into the league. I would hope after a certain point, he would be willing to take a fair deal to play with an organization as world-class as the Patriots over taking a contract for 2 or 3 million more to play with the Raiders.

Especially since taxes will cut into whatever he makes by around 50%, so taking an additional 3 million a year to play wherever, will actually only really be half of that. When your networth is already tens upon tens of millions of dollars, is it worth it to go back to Tampa for another 1.5?

I'm optimistic we keep Revis.

Revis is Ty Law incarnate in more ways than one. He'll take the biggest payday until he retires. If we paid him what he asked, I wouldn't argue. He's elite.

According to Overthecap, even with Revis' $25m cap hit for next year New England sat at $135.7m, which means if there's a $10m increase again like there was from 2013 to 2014 the Patriots would have something like $14m? to spend.

Then if you throw in some cuts for savings: Amendola ($2.1m) & Hooman ($1.2m), there's a somewhat realistic option of being able to absorb Revis' gigantic cap hit and re-sign McCourty & Vereen.

Although if they can get him to sign something like 3/36 or 3/40 and knock $10m off the cap hit immediately it makes things a lot easier.

All I know is I don't want to go back to watching bad quarterbacks throw up a passes for insta-win comebacks following masterful Brady drives.

$12.5m annually seems to be market price.

Just dont know if they'll pay...

They would pay 12.5 but if it was a four year deal I'm sure they would want a possible out for at least the last one when he is 34.

We have Browner locked up for 3 years right?

For a HOF talent that let's the defense line up in pretty much any formation? Belichick would jump at $12.5m a year for Revis.
Depends on signing bonus and guaranteed $. At 30 years old that's all Revis cares about as well.

+1

I tend to agree or at least make the cap charge manageable.

Yes but a $2m roster bonus is due at the conclusion of the 2014 league year. The thing that makes me wonder is that if he makes everything his cap charge in 2015 will be $5.5m.

The Patriots have no leverage with Revis. They have to lower his $25 million cap number in order to resign their own free agents and to sign other players. If they pick up his option, Revis will count at least $17.97 million against the 2015 cap (5 million prorated signing bonus, $12 million roster bonus, and the minimum salary for a player of his experience of $970,000. I'm pretty sure that once the option is picked up that the Patriots can not then convert the 12 million roster bonus into a signing bonus.

This looks like it wll cost us $5m minimum in a prorated bonus hit in any case.

So, he gets a $12m roster bonus (on what day?) and a $1 m in salary. If they don't pick up his option, can he be traded? He would be taking a $13m cost to the new team with him? A seventh round pick from a NFC team would get him out of the conference.

Since many agree $13m is okay to pay him and we have to pay $5m in any case then we need to make a decision. Do we lose McCourty and/or cut Mayo (just for example) and keep Revis anyway? Keep Solder or keep Revis? I think we keep Revis even if he doesn't renegotiate and we have to lose players.

Worse case scenario, pick up the Darrelle Revis option and cut Brandon Browner. Utilize the salary cap savings from the Browner release to re-sign Devin McCourty.

Note: McCourty is three years younger than Browner

It is my optimistic hope that Revis realizes he is in football nirvana and agrees to a long term extension that provides the Patriots flexibility to continue adding more pieces whilst compensating him for his high level of play.

Say what you want but Revis is once again, showing himself to be a top 3 CB in this league. I'm still pinching myself that he's a Patriot.

Correcting a prior post.
Asked Joel Corry this

Question: Let's say the Patriots pick up Revis' option. Can they then convert the roster bonus into a signing bonus?
Answer: The Pats could convert some or all of Revis' roster into signing bonus once the option is exercised.

So the Pats do have until April 1 to lower the cap impact of the 12 million roster bonus.

$12.5m annually seems to be market price.

Just dont know if they'll pay...

$12.5mm for Revis? NE would drop that in a heartbeat. The problem is that Revis' actual market value will be closer to $16mm a year, and that is a taller order.

It comes down to that eternal issue: which is Revis more interested in, pursuing dollars, or rings?

I think we're looking at 12-14M a year for Revis. I really hope he re-signs. He gives us the ability to play man coverage with no help on any WR in the league. You saw against the Broncos how important it was to have him. This allows Browner to play press coverage with over the top help. It really impacts the game and shutdown cb's are almost impossible to find

This, I believe Breer also pointed it out on Twitter that we played a lot of single high safety looks, had we tried that with any other group of corners we'd be the ones losing by 20+ points.

Having Revis and McCourty on the field at the same time allows us to do whatever the hell we want.

"I'll be the first one to admit, now that I'm older, wiser and more mature, that if I could have done something all over again, I would have tried my [best] to stay in New England and finish my career [here]. Not that I have any regrets about the teams that took me in, as far as the New York Jets, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, I'm thankful for the opportunity.

"But you know, and I think I've said this early in my career, I would have loved to start and finish my career with the Patriots. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. But if I had to do it all over again, I would have made more effort to stay a Patriot." - Ty Law

And he has Revis's ear. If the Pats play fair with Revis, they'll keep him, I think. if they don't, they're insane. He's as valuable to a defense as a QB is to an offense.

Sherman got 4/56...there's the benchmark. And worth it.
