Grantland | #HotSportsTakes: Peyton Manning and the Patriots' Celebration Penalty <<

Good read on one of the key differences between Brady and Manning.

The Patriot Way isn’t about records, it’s not about highlights, and it’s not about fireworks. Can you imagine Tom Brady becoming the all-time leader in touchdowns? They wouldn’t stop the game and hold a parade. In New England, they keep the duck boats docked until it’s title time.

It’s the one key difference between two of the greatest quarterbacks in history. It’s the difference between a guy like A-Rod and a guy like Jeter. It’s the difference between Jadeveon Clowney and J.J. Watt. It’s the difference between looking great and being great.

You realize the column is actually mocking stuff like this, right? From the subhead:
"Every now and then, we will attempt to write the worst sports column on earth. Today: Let’s talk about football justice."

I'm shocked at how every single time they post a #hottakes article people fall for it hook, line and sinker.

The author of that article was laughing as it was written.

lol what a bunch of horseshit

was that a troll article? i'm confused.

I had actually missed that  I've read a lot of Grantland including several pieces by Sharp but never seen this particular article type.

Whatever, I agree with it 100% :p

I thought satire was supposed to be relatively obvious?

This is only the 'worst sports column on earth' for all the Peyton apologists that have either (a) had plenty to say over the last 24 hours, or (b) had nothing to say and completely ignored the outcome of the two most hyped and anticipated sporting events in the US in 2014.

Real or not, it was a great article that I happen to agree with.

The denver organzation and fans celebrating mannings breaking the record was an absurd tacky spectical with the horse galloping out on to the field and the fireworks. Manning wasn't drafted by the donkeys and has only played there for what, two or three seasons? Yet they acted like hes been there his whole career. They're desperate to embrace any kind of winner

I know. It's so embarrassing. I really don't know how desperate a fan base has to be to indulge in that stuff without feeling ashamed of themselves.

I posted this on a Denver forum on 9-12-2012 lol
It pretty much sums up EXACTLY what you just said. Was I right or was I right?

So you throw your quarterback under the bus and hire Manning to get your pathetic football organization some regular season wins and now according to every Donkey fan I talk to "Manning is the greatest quarterback ever." lol.

Are you the Colts fanbase now relocated in Colorado? lol

Manning is a Bronco like Montana is a Chief. His legacy is and always will be as a Colt. He's just collecting a paycheck in Denver and you hired him like a football mercenary to carry you through some seasons. Here's a word that comes to mind to describe Denver fans in 2012: Shameless.

What other word would fit a football fanbase that is content to have no identity in exchange for some more wins?

And now listening to you talk, you suddenly sound like you're all from Indianapolis and have suffered triumph and heartbreak with him since the year of his draft. Skimming over your forums is just laughable.

The 2012 Broncos may get more regular season wins this year than you would have with Tebow but at the cost of being a completely SOULLESS football team. Signing or drafting a quarterback (especially one like Manning), isn't like signing a wide receiver, or a kick returner, or a tight end.
You signed Manning mercenary style to get you some extra wins and now that's the face of your organization - a mercenary.
That's your identity, congratulations lol.

And in the end it isn't even going to get you anything. Tom Brady - the REAL best quarterback of all time - along with Bill Belichick have a LONG and DISTINGUISHED history of completely owning Manning and routinely knocking him out of the post season. Manning didn't even get his first win against Brady until the 2006 season which was the weakest Patriot team of the Brady era, which had been completely stripped of ALL its offensive weapons and yet he still carried it to the AFC Championship game. After that Manning was just one of many of Brady's victims on the Patriot path to perfection and then Brady got injured and wasn't 100% until two seasons later when he went 14-2 and lost by just one point iirc. This season the Patriots are fielding what is perhaps the greatest Patriot team of all time, so best of luck to your soulless, hollow, shell of a football team with no identity of its own. lol.

Shameless.

I'd rather go 0-16 then latch on to the Colts legacy like some sort of parasite for a decent regular season showing.

You and your new Bronco team makes me laugh.

P.S. If you think the addition of your dome-quarterback is going to result in any significant change from what we did to you last year in the post season you're completely delusional.

Talk about a broken record.

Pretty awesome line to end it with.

That said, I agree with everything. I was disgusted in 2011 when the game in New Orleans stopped to congratulate Brees on breaking the yardage record, I'm not sure if it stopped for Manning last year but it may not have been a home game either.

It's pathetic.

I don't believe that our team would stop the game for Brady, but I'm also content with not finding out. He doesn't need the all time records. I want to see the confetti fall after the game, preferably in Arizona this coming February. Red, White, and Blue everywhere.

It did make me wonder about the motivations of Demaryius Thomas when he gave up the info about the preplanned choreographed celebration - he must have known it would make Manning look like an anal retentive, attention whore, right?

This was the point that stood out to me:

Or Sunday was reality, to be exact. Reality for everyone in America who spent the last few months slobbering over regular-season success.

Obviously Sunday was just another regular season game and we shouldn't treat it as a final referendum on the Manning-Brady debate. That being said, I thought there was some gems in the article like this one:

You want to talk historic numbers? Manning got the most touchdowns this year, but he’s always been the all-time leader in excuses.

That one rings too true to be entirely satire.

The article reads like a history of the P6 era, especially the part about the excuses.

Did anyone notice during the game when the announcer was gushing over Manning possibly becoming the 2nd QB to win 100 games more than he lost? After all of the emotion and excitement at that possibility, he then quietly mumbled that Brady is the only QB to ever do it.

He still is. ;)

I know. It's so embarrassing. I really don't know how desperate a fan base has to be to indulge in that stuff without feeling ashamed of themselves.
You said it better than i did, they should be embarressed by the show they put on

Leading into an article with "we're attempting to write a bad article" is embarrassing.
Simply an attempt to gain some attention, while saying "maybe we don't really mean this."

Are the Denver fans not supposed to cheer for Manning because he was a Colt first?
Were we not supposed to cheer for Bill Walton when he joined the Celtics? Or Kevin Garnett?
Were we not supposed to cheer Rodney Harrison when he joined the Patriots? Does that tarnish the ring?

Denver took a risk on a player with a significant neck injury, assigned a ton of salary cap space, and it really paid off. They went to the Super Bowl. Good move.

The article basically says if you don't win the league championship regularly, you are not a good player.

Let's beat Denver again if we face them again.
I think what the Patriots really stand for is respecting their rivals. They are a good team with some good players. They are very tough to beat.

It may be intended as satire, but that alone doesn't make it satire. I think it makes the writers look like idiots for thinking this content is in any way laughable. In trying to make fun of people that think these stats based fireworks displays are stupid, they only manage to show how right those people are. In the end, they only managed to make fun of themselves for their blind stat worship.

And that halftime thing with the white horse makes Peyton look ridiculous.
