Thomas is a free agent after this season, and unless the Broncos franchise him, it doesn't look like they are going to reach a contract extension. It is possible, but usually those things happen sooner in the season/preseason.

Although it is often repeated that the Patriots rarely go after big name WRs, they have gone after some fairly big name guys who, while not in their primes, were still considered to be impact players. These include Reggie Wayne, Anquan Boldin, Donte Stallworth (we forget that at the time they signed him, he was the #1 FA WR), and Steve Smith.

I think that Thomas is a unique case for several reasons:

1. He isn't a one trick pony, ala Mike Wallace or Vincent Jackson with speed only. Thomas has shown in Denver that he can run every route well; he also likely has the intelligence to play in this offense, since he has done so well with Manning.

2. Josh McDaniels drafted Thomas, and we've seen the lengths the Patriots go to in order to get Josh's guys, (Amendola, Salas) or are not a good fit (Lloyd.) I'm guessing the Patriots would view this as a lower risk factor, given McDaniels connection.

3. You know that, although Belichick is as cold and rational as they come, there's nothing more that he likes than serving revenge on a cold platter. Something tells me he would love to pry away Thomas, a true game changer, from Denver after the moves they pulled with Welker and Talib.

All that said, I'm guessing Thomas ends up back in Denver because Manning always gets what he wants and despite having the greatest player in any sport in the history of western civilization, Mannuing's teams still find the need to surround Manning with more talent than any other quarterback who has ever lived. If he gets through Denver somehow, the market will obviously be very high- I could see Thomas getting somewhere north of $14M per year. Do you think the Patriots would consider him at that price?

Not interested.

The garbage teams are going to be throwing a lot of money at Denver's FA's this off season and any contenders who want them are going to have to over pay.

Also, Denver players aren't cool enough to be Patriots.

BB will NEVER pay the overinflated prices guys like that command for a WR. Not gonna happen.

He is tainted, having already played for the broncos

DT is a true number 1 WR, and it probably going to be the best FA available in the offseason, hes going to get something like 12 million a year.

that kind of scratch is better put elsewhere.

Thomas is good, but hes not megatron good.

Many teams overvalue the WR position. BB does not. I would never expect a big money WR to be signed here.

Look at the value we get out of a guy like Brandon LaFell. Now why would we spend top Dollar on a wide receiver when there is better value in cheaper guys... Although, I do feel like it is important to grab a guy in the off-season if Gronkowski happens to get hurt again, it just won't be a guy that costs an arm and a leg.

Generally agree, but he makes exceptions - he did re-sign Moss at $27 million over 3. At the time the franchise WR tag was $7+ million. I'd be surprised if they saw Demaryius as another guy to make an exception for, but I don't think we can rule it out.

Thomas is the real deal. If he isn't asking for the moon, NE will definitely be interested.

Well, a) he will be, and b) no, they won't. He'll be one of the 10mil+ WRs, and there's no way Bill will pay that for a WR.

Ding ding ding. We would barely even pony up the cash for Moss after his ridiculous 07 season. With the way wideouts are hit and miss in this offense, it's a good strategy.

He's not leaving Denver anyway. He's priority #1 over there even to Julias. They would tag him if they couldn't make a deal.

You mean the guy who was already on the team and just set a TD record while his QB set a passing TD record and they had the highest scoring offense ever? Umm, I wouldn't extend that exception to Demarius Thomas.

Pats need to make a run at him if only to run up the price for the Broncos or anyone else that gets him. After the whole Welker fiasco I would be thrilled to screw that up for them.

Barely? They paid him $9mm a year, the top annual pay for a WR in league history, IIRC. They were also willing to pay Welker $8mm a year in 2012 and $6mm a year for Branch in 2006.

I'm not sure where the idea that NE refuses to pay for WRs comes from. Maybe they don't draft 'em too high, and they are always looking for an arbitrage opportunity, but when they find one they like, they pay him.

There are 30 other teams that will be more willing to run the price up than the Patriots.

I would love to see Brady throwing to Jeremy Maclin he took a one year prove it deal with the Eagles and he is really proving it. Maclin can run by any CB in this league he's a solid well-rounded WR.
