Tedy's chat this week was so good it warrants at least two threads; I also just quoted it in the thread on defensive snap count. The biggest surprise for me was:

I just can't say enough about the plan Matt Patricia put together. He's a unique coach. I know how smart he is. He's one of the few coaches that have coached under Belichick that is able to have his own ideas and schemes and implement them the Matt Patricia way -- not giving it to his players while doing his best Bill Belichick imitation. Players recognize that when a coach starts to develop for himself. Don't get me wrong, when he first started as a LB coach, me and Junior Seau gave him a hard time about being a young coach the way veteran players do. But he's developed into a true asset for this organization.

I don't know who it was, but there was some analyst out there yesterday who stated that they think Matt Patricia could be a head coaching candidate in the near future.

And just a few weeks ago he was being crucified..

"What I saw was an uneasy Peyton Manning. That's the way he gets when he can't get the answers he wants. He's a guy that wants the answers to the test before it's handed out and that's diagnosing pre-snap information."

So, true Tedy.

Bru's comments were very interesting.

Before reading Bru's comments, my impression of Patricia was very favorable in that he is very intelligent, worked his way up the ranks and by giving him the DC title, had the respect of BB as a professional, a leader and a good football mind. I didn't bash him too much on the D as in the past they had injuries and a dearth of talent in key positions (see CB, LB, DE)

His appearance is that of someone off the set from Sons of Anarchy but Bru's comments give me a sense of confidence that Patricia is not afraid to be innovative and not be a BB puppet. JMD strikes me as the same kind of person. The have their own ideas and aas long as they can justify them are not afraid to implement them.

Folks around here questioned that BB surrounded himself with lackeys. With JMD, Caserio and Patricia, he has young leaders that have earned his trust and confidence. I think that confidence in his lieutenants allows BB to lead the org and not play wet nurse to understudies. I don't think you could say that 3-4 years ago.

Good stuff.

He wants the answers to the test ahead of time and then to teabag the TA afterwards.

I agree with you that he's always seemed to be a really good coach, but I google imaged "Sons of Anarchy" and I'm not seeing the likeness. Definitely an asset to the org though.

I just got an image there of BB and Matt Patricia that I would like to have surgically removed from my brain.

But the point is a good one - many studies of different great leaders have shown that the best ones are those who want different opinions and can accept criticism and new ideas that come from others. This is just one of the many ways that the BB-Brady partnership will always defeat the Manning individualism.

I've always seen Patricia as an okay coordinator on a short leash. When things go bad BB steps in and takes over on the sidelines. He also seems level headed and sort of lacks emotions like Jim Caldwell.

Bruschi dispels a lot of rumors about Patricia... he reminds me of an Eastern Orthodox Priest in Nike duds...

BB has the final say in any of this...

I don't know what to think of Patricia. Just like seeing his befuddled face when his schemes aren't working, used to think he didn't have a clue at times but I guess I was a little off.

This always struck me as an unfounded-bordering-on-asinine statement to make. Why would a man so focused on winning ever do that? Even the "evidence" of guys like Tavon Wilson is hardly compelling. Bill overruling his scouts only demonstrates that he has veto power, not that he surrounds myself with sycophants.

Exactly. I think BB is a pretty good leader, always open to fresh ideas and new ways of doing things better. He strikes me as someone secure in his position and with himself. He doesn't have the innate need to be stroked or have reaffirmation that his way is the best way. What he does require is evidence or a strong position by someone backed by research and rationale that has earned his respect to change his mind opinion on something.

My impression of Patricia was always as someone with a great deal of potential that was taking his time settling into the world of NFL defenses and slowly getting to where he is now. So it's very interesting to hear that, pretty much from the get-go, he was thought of so highly by the players.

Not only that, but as someone who consistently wins over such a long period of time (14 years), BB has proven himself capable of evolving in order to stay ahead of the curve. He is also not afraid to acknowledge making an error and addressing it.

You may want to consider that it may be the other way around, namely waiting for the players to develop consistency and catch up with his schemes.

Yup. A man so beholden to his own opinion does not go searching for new ideas every offseason the way BB does with his cadre of college connections.

Yep, I can go with that.

That was good to read; but Bruschi also loved Brandon Spikes (in his weekly chats two years ago he'd mention how great it was seeing Spikes develop); so I'm going to let Patricia show me a little more than one game before I start liking him as a DC.
