Game Thoughts: The Pats beat the Broncos like a rented mule edition

So, now I'm "too slow." More "arrogance" evidence. Man, you are really full of yourself.
Boy from the looks of it you have one thick skull. How someone manages to make an argument over this is beyond me..

Bronco fan here. Pats were the vastly superior team today in every area. No sugar coating it. Denver stunk because of what the Pats were able to do on both sides of the ball.

Congrats on a dominate performance, awell deserved win and best of luck the rest of the season.

Hoping the Broncos can make the necessary adjustments and finish strong. Maybe the second time around they will have some answers. Cheers!

Always good when fans of rival teams can act courteous and be cordial after a loss. Good luck with the rest of the season (just not too much). And hopefully we will get Brady/Manning 17 for the AFCCG.

Perfect thread title ,Rob.

Sums it up quite succinctly.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but you go back and look at my posts last week and the week before and the week before that. I have been saying the Broncos are overrated for a while now. They are a top team, but they are not heads and shoulders above anyone else as they are portrayed. They are one of about 3-4 teams that are the best in the league but they are in that pack, not sitting at #1 alone.

I too have been saying precisely that, and identifying who and where they are weaker. They are a good team no doubt, but they are NOT... Da '85 Bears!

Actually, if you listen to the media, the 85 Bears would be lucky to hold that offense to 35 points.

Speaking of their offense and being overrated, the media and some fans consistently said this years' Broncos offense is better than last year's. I just don't see it. That offense scored points at a historic rate while this year's offense arguably isn't even the best offense in the league this year.

My game thoughts:

Brady Showed pretty clearly tonight why he is better then manning. Less "weapons" yet he absolutely lit the "vastly improved" denver defense up. The difference in arm strength was glaring today, Brady threw darts through the wind, manning threw ducks.

Minitron showed that yes, he hasn't not lost it, he was just not the focus the last few weeks, Huge punt return, Lots of great catches.

Amendola with a couple of HUGE first downs

Gronk was very gronk today, Despite the very scary attempt by ward to end his season, again.

Our running game was off all day, but the denver D is good against the run, and we had a rookie touting the rock so it was to be expected.

Ayers with an Awesome sack.

Chung acting like he belongs on a superbowl caliber defense. He was the person on D for a couple of big plays by denver, but Short of getting flagged for a penalty I don't see how his coverage could have been much better.

The broncos missing a field goal because the kick hit the upright in the 5 foot section that was added this off season because BB made the suggestion that the uprights be increased 5 yards. Suck it manning, you're not the only one that can get something changes to benefit you.

Should have had more interceptions then we did, but i guess ill just have to live with those 4 turnover's on downs!

After that HORRIFIC Pass interference that led to the broncos first TD i thought the game was going to go down hill quick, but then the refs swallowed their whistles for a couple of quarters before they got the call that things were getting out of hand, and marched denver down the field with a bunch of BS ghost penalties to try and keep the game close.

The amount of manning face we were given today was great.

The amount of ball washing the announcers gave manning was ABSURD. anytime the patriots got anything in their favor there was reviews, and slow mo replay, and reviews, and calls to mike carey to see "hey do you think the patriots got away with something there?" And then any time the broncos got a call nothing but praise for the refs, and how much of a general manning is out there.

Worried the broncos are going to have a chip on their shoulder the next time we meet, we embarassed them today.

Up 3 scores with 4 minutes to go why is gronk running seem routes?

I laughed when I read this article by Aaron Schatz on ESPN Insider yesterday:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/stor...-denver-broncos-performing-historic-level-nfl

What is historic is the amount of hype the Broncos have gotten. They are a top team, but the media has crowned them way too soon.

I agree that the Broncos have gotten a historic amount of hype this year, especially the offense. However, I think using that article as an example of hype is a bit unfair. Schatz pretty much is talking only about the Broncos DVOA numbers here, as he usually does. If you're trying to say that DVOA doesn't accurately reflect the quality of the team, I'll never argue with that. Numbers obviously can never tell the whole story. But I don't think Schatz was indulging in hype.

Now, if you wanna bag on somebody over at FO, make it Kascmar and I'll join you. :D That guy cherry picks data to try to prove his preconceived notions. But I haven't observed that to be the case with Schatz.

To Five head's credit, the ducks were not true ducks, he threw a damn good spiral in most of them. However, he was lofting and dropping his passes into buckets rather than throwing them through windows.

This was a very well executed game in all three phases. The defense was lights out in the first half and seemed to let up a touch in the second. Looked like more zone on the scoring drives (admittedly I missed much of the early third finishing up the smoked wings), followed by more man after. This team seems to have the horses to shut teams down manning up and letting the cards fall.

The offensive line gets the game ball. Vollmer seemed to struggle a bit, but outside of that, they looked fantastic. Case in point, qb sneak in second and three. I hope stork stays healthy, he looked great tonight. That could certainly be a huge addition to a fairly established line (returning starters being shuffled anyways), allowing a luxury bpa (on the oline) pick to have massive impact in the next few years. The run game was anemic, but the line seemed to get good push and created veins that could have been taken advantage of.

Gray reminds me of a slightly more talented, young BJGE. He has slightly more "wiggle," and seems a little more explosive. He also sends to have a knack for avoiding negative plays, and seems to have the similar ability to drive into contact and fall forward (not quite as good as BJGE in his last few years in this regard). He seems to be a solid depth back. Not someone you want to rely on as your runner, but someone who can effectively run due to injuries. Good bye bolden.

The mayo injury may be a blessing in disguise. Ayers looks to be a steal for the swap of picks. Walker looked decent when I was paying attention. Surely walker is no threat to rush the passer, but he seems to be a solid large body demanding attention on the line.

Collins. He was all over the place early. Loved the tone setting toss of sanders in the first three and out. He seemed solid enough in coverage and did a great job timing his blitzes when called on.

Chung?! My wife even gave me **** for how I've been railing on him at times this year. He played great today. If he can consistently perform like this the secondary gets scary to oc's league wide.

As far as gronk and the seam, fu(k ward and the hell with Stat-on Manning. How many of that papa John's butt boy's touchdowns have come within five yards of the end zone? Ten yards? Gets pulled after throwing a lateral to break the single season passing record but it doesn't get overturned? I hope he chokes on some garbage commercial crust.

Edit: in regards to gronk, he seems to be running over his toes rather than upright. Hence the ability to avoid having his knee blown up on the first reception. I think this is a cognizant adjustment he is performing instinctually at this point. Rather than running upright looking to run through smaller safeties he seems to have adjusted to protecting himself by lowering his shoulder, falling forward with momentum, and possibly delivering quite the hit to any safety attacking him low while in a potentially compromising position. I noticed the same tendency with a few of his subsequent receptions, and it gives me great confidence in his health going forward.

Because while we fans say "OMG WTF TJ WARD is gonna injure Gronk again and ruin our season," Belichick and Josh and Brady say "LOL TJ Ward is hot garbage and can't cover anyone. Let's treat him like Anthony Smith back in 2007 LULZ."

Message for Mr. Shannon Sharpe.

"someone better call the National guard".

There was a bit of satisfaction yesterday that the better safety between him and Chung yesterday was Chung. The Broncos paid top of the market money for Ward and Chung is playing for the veteran minimum.

I always thought Ward was an overrated addition. Very good vs. the run. Awful in coverage.

BTW, with all the media talk about how the Broncos' offense is better than last year, both the Pats and Colts are scoring more points per game than them. And both those teams struggled in September.

Though I hope this isn't the equivalent of our "Chiefs" moment (with a similar effect). Though the chiefs game was a beatdown to our team and while our win (pver Broncos) was decisive, it wasn't that bad a performance by Denver.

Manning might have thrown 438 yds, but hey I don't blame them against Peyton Manning. They still stopped the Broncos on key 3rd down plays, and stopped them on 4th down every single time. They did a good job keeping on Welker, psyching him out and making him drop that pass for the INT. Two INTs, imo, met my expectations and they didn't disappoint. And the O-line did a really great job against the denver D-line. If anybody knows defenses, its Bellichick.
Yeah, the WRs dropped passes. And that's something to be worked on. But when they weren't dropping them, they were making plays. **** happens, what can I say? One thing, though, they need to work on more is discipline. Three penalties in a row that were blatant, obvious, and stupid led to 7 pts by Denver. They had them stopped. But they did stop them everywhere else where it mattered so it doesn't seem like such a big problem in the end. I just would like to see a problem like that ousted in the future. Especially with 4 good teams coming up.

It was a good team effort, all 3 sides of the ball got in on it. Good passing on offense, good stops on defense, and of course the special teams efforts - kicking FGs in windy conditions like that, Eldeman scoring on a return. The returning was pretty decent overall, actually.

Thanks.

Well, I think that Denver will learn a few things out of this game that will help them to identify and fix some issues. However, what I am very happy about is that our game was after the trade deadline. There will be no more reinforcements for the Broncos to help stuff those holes.

The thing is, Denver paid a fair amount for Ward (he has a $7.75M cap hit next year), who is nothing special. Basically a smaller Bernard Pollard. The Pats picked Pat Chung up for spare change, and are getting better play and productivity.

It's awesome that the Pats have home field and the #1 seed NOW, but it'll be tough to hold onto it. It's looking like the Miami/Buffalo games at the end of the year won't be the cakewalks we all thought they'd be as both teams could be fighting for a playoff spot. Add to that the often mentioned games at GB, SD, Ind, and home to Det, and as awesome as the Pats looked last night I can't see them wining out and maintaining the HFA. But I do see Den winning out simply because it's Manning and he'll get all the flags and the teams they're playing won't be able to overcome the flag day parade. Plus they have the easier schedule.
My big hope is that, providing the Pats finish as the #2 and get that bye is that the lower seed from wild card weekend can go to denver and knock them off. right now that could be any one of Pit, Bal, Ind, or Cin before the season closes. I'd like Pit or Bal to go into Den and win, but not so much Ind. Like it or not, and I'm just being realistic, I think home field is a long shot. Hey, last time Pats won it they had to go to 15-1 Pittsburgh and blew them out...

Funny that I never heard the word "blueprint" last night. Remember that rom '07? Be interesting to see what other teams get from this film. Certainly hard not t notice that at different times D Thomas, Welker and E Sanders all looked more than a little beat up. Raiders might be tough next week in Oakland; they've played well (as we know) and gave Seattle a tough go in Seattle last night.

Rob, were you surprised at how well Browner handled DT early on? Of course he had McCourty shaded to his side often, but I thought he did very well. Also did a very good job on JT as well.
