Just coming across the Twitter wire.. Mayor Tom Menino has succumbed to cancer.

RIP, Tom..

RIP Menino.

I am sure Sammy Sooser, Vince Wilcock, Rajon Hondo, Wes Wekler, Adam Varitek, Rob Grabowski, and Mike McGwyer are all morning today with this news.

Wow, that was quick.
He was in public last week and it was just announced that they were switching to palliative care.
He worked until the end. High energy man. Big legacy.

Yeah, this was really sudden. I had thought he would have more time than this given his announcement just last week. I'll miss all his silly name contortions. He was quite a character.

RIP Menino.

not that it really matters but Teddy Kennedy was the guy who said Sooser and I think Mike McGwire.

Wonder if they'll have a wolling wally.

;)

RIP Mr. Mayor. You lived a great life.

Another cancer victim...with all the money we all throw at this disease that affects all our lives you'd think we would be further ahead of the game..

...RIP Mayor Menino, a uniquely charming and wonderful man...

RIP mumbles...

He really transformed Boston to a world class city...

Prayers to him and to his loved ones. May his eternal soul rest in peace, and may our Lord meet him, keep him and mispronounce his name.

...on purpose, of course...

Tom Menino, former mayor of Boston, "Mayor Mumbles," known for his stumbling and mumbling, and to sports fans for his infamous botching of sports names and events, passed away today, after a short bout with cancer.

He infamously infuriated Pats fans when he dedicated the Bobby Orr statue, saying that the famous Orr goal was right up there with other great sports moment such as when:

Havlicek stole the ball; Fisk waving the ball fair; Flutie launching the Hail Mary pass; Varitek splitting the uprights.

His other known flubs include pleading Red Sox fans to be responsible when the team
brings back the world series cup.

He has also referred to Wilfork as "Wilcock," Welker as "Weckler," Gostkowski as "Grabowski," and Gronk as "Gonk."

He also nearly dropped the Red Sox World Championship trophy.

His malapropisms were not just limited to sports, but ran the gamut- an example:

This Boston parking shortage thing.. it's an Alcatraz around my neck.

its not like his thick boston accent helped make him sound intelligent either... but RIP Mayor Menino

I love this resource, but this quote below might have a problem.

Wikipedia said:
Ran (this is Menino) unopposed and won 71 percent of the vote.

Who got the other 29%?

The relationship between Menino and the Patriots is complex.
As a Mass-based team operating outside the city of Boston, the Patriots have never had the heart of the Mayor the way the Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics have.
The Patriots made no friends with Hizzoner when they pursued the South Boston site without starting with Menino. South Boston residents didn't want a big stadium in their backyard, and Menino did nothing to encourage it. Shaughnessy claims Menino "never forgave" the Krafts for leading this without his very-active partnership. Developers in Boston famously let Menino select among several architectural mock-ups of buildings, allowing him to pick the final design. Ultimately a downtown Boston stadium failed due to lack of political support, and fans continue to drive to Foxboro to enjoy a game. If you wanted to build anything in Boston during his tenure, you started with the Mayor.
By contrast, while the new owners of Fenway objectively preferred a new stadium, Menino made clear he wanted the team to stay in the old confines, and they embraced his desire. He became a huge supporter of the Sox.

RIP Mayor Menino. You were a true Bostonian who went above and beyond for his city.
