cant wait for the Denver game

should be a good barometer of our team

BB vs the Forehead

A meeting of the minds

Another passive aggressive Brady post for those of you keeping score at home...

If right now means only this week, then sure. If it means in half of the NFL's 8 weeks, then no. The Patriots sure as hell haven't looked complete against the Jets/Chiefs/Raiders/Dolphins.

As happens every year, fans overrate their team's successes and their opponents' failures, while minimizing their team's failures and their opponents' successes.

A true perspective. I would also add 'fans also tend to overrate their team's losses'. The average NFL fan (not directed at you Mayo) has a memory equivalent to a house fly's life expectancy.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to overrate the failures of the NY Jets. IMPOSSIBLE.

Since I was the one who made the statement, I'll clarify. Obviously, the Pats have been inconsistent, and if they don't play well they stand a good chance of losing against any one of the teams listed. But if they play reasonably well, and with good intensity and focus, then I think they are a better team than SD, Indy, Green Bay and Detroit. They aren't a better team than Denver through 8 weeks, but I think they match up well, and it's still relatively early in the season.

No, you're not the only one who's been saying such things. It's in the weekly "other" game threads, time and again. People slough off the 41 points the Chiefs scored against NE, but cross Indy off the list of possible SB contenders because they got lit up today. The Patriots 2 losses and even more poor outings can be overcome, but the Bengals are done. The 6-1 Broncos, who's only loss was an overtime loss to the reigning SB champions, are soft, but the Patriots team that has surrendered over 190 yards on the ground 3 times is not. Etc...

I can't speak for other people, though there does seem to be a pendulum effect that varies wildly depending on the latest game. Personally, I haven't changed my assessment very much from game to game. I'm personally looking at what I think will be the trajectory of this team. I'm sure there will be more blips in the road between now and the end of the season, whenever that may be.

The divisional races are looking crowded at the moment:

AFC: Denver 6-1, NE 6-2, Cincinnati 4-2-1, Indianapolis 5-3 currently lead their divisions. San Diego is 5-2. Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Buffalo are all 5-3. Kansas City, Cleveland and Miami are all 4-3.

NFC: Dallas 6-1, Arizona 6-1 and Detroit 6-2 lead their divisions. The NFC South will likely come down to 4 loss Carolina or 4 loss New Orleans. 5-2 Philadelphia and 5-3 GB are currently in the wild card positions, with 3 loss Seattle and SF looking up at the pack right now.

Personally, I like the fact that Buffalo and Miami are hanging tough. Winning the division by Thanksgiving may not be the best thing for building playoff toughness.

You wouldn't be a BB guy if he didn't draft Brady. You wouldn't be trolling this board if Brady wasn't a Patriot. If the 49ers drafted him, you'd be on their board making passive aggressive comments. If holding you accountable for saying anti Brady things is stalking you, then sure I'm stalking you.

I think most people had the conference as a two team race before the season started. I think the slow start made people question that, but there's nothing that's really changed enough that the initial assessment should be tossed out. They were the two teams in the AFCCG last year, even with both having significant injury lists.

My point was about the volatility and hypocrisy of the "They suck because they've had the same things happen to them that the awesome Patriots have had happen to them" notions.

Free agency, the salary cap, roster turnover, the lack of preparation in training camp, injuries and attrition, inconsistent refereeing, and other factors have all contributed to making the NFL a league of parity. That appears to be what the NFL wants. They'd rather have a lot of close games mixed in with some blowouts and unpredictability than consistent play. Most teams in the NFL have been Jeckyl and Hyde, including most of the better teams in the NFL. NE, Indy, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Green Bay are all good examples.

I agree that it's hypocrisy to cherry pick our good moments and other teams' bad moments. I think that we're a better and more complete team than the other teams I just listed, but the games have to be played on the field, and the outcome will depend on who gives a better effort and executes better on a given day.

The Broncos have been the most complete and consistent team in the NFL this season, and they deserve credit for that. They have shown mental toughness and consistency to a greater degree than any other team. They should be the favorites right now. They've also played a fairly tough schedule. My only 2 caveats are (1) they've played 5 of their 7 games at home, and (2) it's early, and the team that appears dominant the first half of the season is often not the one standing at the end. But that's not to detract from what they've accomplished so far. The Pats will need to bring their A game to win this week.

I was tearing (what's left of) my hair out after yesterday's game trying to figure out which is the real Pats team: the Vikings/Bills/Bengals/Bears Pats or the Jets/Chiefs/Raiders/Dolphins Pats.?

And the answer was clear. It's both.

The Pats have not yet shown that they are going to be a dominant team this year. They are a very good team, but, so far at least, their weaknesses can jump up and bite them or scare them one week (Chiefs/Jets) while their strengths can humiliate teams with delusions of being good (Bengals/Bears) another week.

What does that mean? When I was starting out in the business world, a very wise guy said to me, "Remember, you're never as good as you think you are on your best day or as bad as you think you are on your worst day."

That applies to this Pats team as well. We're all just along for the ride.

I, for one, will not take any of these games for granted, especially since we're the walking wounded right now. Anything can happen on a short week with many injuries and a divisional opponent that always gets up to play the Pats and beat them last season (no matter what you feel about the call). Denver has perhaps the most talented O in the league and Sanders, especially, will be a headache. The Bears are a team with which we are not extremely familiar and they have two big-time WRs. All three games are winnable, but I rather tread with caution.

Couldn't agree more, every game is big for the Patriots and they can beat anyone and lose to anyone with this team. They played a great game against the Bears and will need to come out and dictate play to the bronco's in the same way. Control TOP and make the Bronco's play from behind all day.

To be honest it's nice that they are even in the discussion for a win this week because the way things looked early on they were going to get rolled in the regular season match-up. I still think this team is a work in progress and we won't see their best football until December, so all i really care about is making the play-offs and let them take it from there, fore once they don't actually have the division locked up going into November.

Right on the money.

who knows......maybe you're right in that if he didn't draft brady he wouldn't have had the success.....and i wouldn't care about him......maybe you're wrong and he would have been successful anyway

he did go 11-5 and then win a playoff game at cleveland with Vinny as his QB and a mediocre team

i root for people that i like and identify with.......BB is one.......gregg popovich is another

i wouldn't be on the 49ers board if they had Brady

im neutral on Brady......but i acknowledge his greatness and he seems like a good guy

you have it backwards...as usual.....i would be on whatever board of the team that BB was coaching.....whether that was Oakland, buffalo, or whoever

You come onto this board bashing Brady after they are 2-2, then you hope Manning has the defense to get over the hump this year, but I'm the one who has it backwards. Typical James logic. As another poster has said, your on the wrong forum.

i was speaking in jest about manning

the team, including brady, looked bad after 4 games

i admit to trolling the people who think brady will be elite into his 40s

we have the most defensive fans about brady of any team in the league

i doubt the packer fans or the bronco fans or the colts fans or the saints fans really think their QBs will be elite in their 40s.......but a significant part of our fanbase actually thinks that about brady

its not a coincidence that he is playing elite again after the OL gels and Gronk (arguably the best offensive weapon in the league) is looking healthy again

NEP, since im a BB fan, what message board should i go to?

You're a walking contradiction, so I'm not sure how to answer your question. Maybe Felger and Mazz have a board where you can make fun of the boo hoo Brady crew all day.

Bump.

3-0 for the home streak and 7-2 at the bye. Not bad.

The AFC is looking pretty crowded right now, and San Diego has fallen off the cliff:

7-2 Pats
6-2 Broncos
6-3 or 5-4 Colts (still to play on MNF against the Giants)
5-2-1 Bengals
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
6-3 Steelers/Ravens winner (Steelers leading by 12 at the half)
5-3 Dolphins
5-3 Bills
5-3 Chiefs
5-3 Browns
5-4 Steelers/Ravens loser (note: the Ravens have lost to Cincinnati twice; if Pittsburgh loses they will have lost to the Ravens twice)
5-4 Chargers

Indy doesn't scare me because Luck has never hurt us. We play and all he does is throw interceptions. Until he puts on his big boy pants against the Patriots I can't give them that much respect. I think that's fair.
Indy will be a win.

Green Bay's defense won't stop us and ours will slow theirs down.
Green Bay will be a win.
