The Trade - 8 Games Later

O line depth would have been nice to have. Hopefully our guys are healthy in the playoffs and it won't matter, but until that point I will be nervous about seeing devey in January.

Then again, that fourth round pick could turn into a second or third round pick via trades so between that and the cap space the jury won't be out for a while.

I want to see #1 what they do with that 7 million #2 how the OL holds up come playoff time before I call it a win just yet

Why? The OL hasn't held up in the playoffs since 2007, so the worst case would be more of the same. And if they use the $7mm on NLTBE bonuses, that just means that they have $7mm additional of their actual 2015 cap space. Trying to say precisely what they used the extra cap space on is like trying to pin jelly against the wall.

keeping Revis and McCourty next year
if they are able to keep McCourty/Revis because of it
keep McC/Revis
keeps revis and Dmac in town

It's amazing how everyone's plot lines sync up...

Personally I'm not counting on BB making the kind of offer that will keep Revis in town. He's more than happy to rent a guy for a year (see Talib, Aqib).

The Mankins move wasn't about clearing up cap space for Revis. The kind of cut BB was asking Mankins to take certainly wouldn't free up the kind of money Revis will want at the end of a solid season.

To me it was more about paying a certain value for a certain kind of player in a certain role, which is why I don't think we'll see BB pay what Revis will want at the end of a solid season.

No question, but you can't expect to give up nothing in a trade. A year of Mankins would have been nice to have; 3 years of Tim Wright cheap + significant rollover cap space + a 4th round pick is, I think, even nicer.

Brady, Seymour, Wilfork, Mankins, Moss, Colvin, AD.... the Patriots have demonstrated time and time again that they are willing to pay top dollar for elite talent. Mankins was let go because he was overpaid and overrated, and had been for several years. He is evidence of nothing with regard to Revis.

I disagree about Revis. Belichick will pay elite players (Gronk, Brady, Seymour, Wilfork, Mankins, etc.). Revis is a HOFer. I expect the Pats to keep him unless someone offers him stupid money like $18 million a year.

BTW, the Pats did pay Revis $12 million this year which is top of the market money (or at least it was when he signed the contract). So that alone goes against your theory.

Pats are getting away from smurf receivers and moving toward height along the edges and it's starting to show with Brady gaining more confidence in Wright,Lafell and Tyms. Gronk has always been there, it was just a matter of how long before he came back into game shape after his surgery. Trade was good for Pats as they get to give Stork some experience early on and get a nice compliment to Gronk on the other side.. It will pay dividends in the long run.

personally, I think revis is JUST the type of player for Belicheck to make a kind of offer to keep around. This isnt aqib talib...a pretty good CB.

this is Darelle Revis....HOF CB possibly the best since Deion Sanders. If you want to keep this run going, you re-sign him. these types of opportunties/players dont come around often and drop into your hands. it would be a mistake to let him go.

Belicheck has never been shy to pay for what he believes to be HOF talent...which is why they went against the usual MO and re-upped Gronkowski early.

You have to understand that Deus makes definitive decisions at the time of these types of moves and will never admit he is wrong. Tim Wright could become a perennial All Pro and go to the HOF and that 4th round pick also becomes a HOFer while Mankins retires after the season and he might change his tune to "the Pats got fleeced, but not all that bad".
There are still people who don't have Deus on ignore?

Anyway, as others have noted, this trade is already a win, and it looks like it will only get more lopsided as Wright gets more comfortable.

Dues's is one of those I'm always right, even when I'm so very very wrong. hes the Felger of the forum.

I thought the trade was smart, now i think it was brilliant.

After 8 games, are we better off, or worse off?
=================================
Out - Mankins
In - Wright, 4th rounder, $7M in 2014 cap money
===================================
I agree that we might have actually used SOME of that cap money. Perhaps, we will by Tuesday. Otherwise, it will be put to good use next year.
I am fond of Tim Wright I think he will continue to grow (literally and figuratively) into the TE position and he appears to have a great pair of hands. The OL has been solid since Wendell has returned from injury, I think he and Connolly have solidified the situation, and Josh Kline has moved into the #3 role doing a nice job. I am fine with the trade right now, but the fruits of the trade are likely to show in 2015 more so than now, which is a real positive.

Revis thinks of this deal as a one-year deal. The way his contract is structured shows that to be true. He knew he needed something to boost his value after the year in Tampa, but didn't want to be locked in to a long term deal. So, I'm convinced he's going to ask for stupid money and chances are good he won't get stupid money from BB.

I don't have anyone on ignore even obvious trolls. I find some of Deus' posts fascinating. Not in the way he intended, but it is quite the interesting peak into his mind.

The Pats do have some leverage since he is under contract. And Revis seems to always lived year to year with his contract. His post rookie deal with the Jets was only a two year deal made to look like a long term deal. His deal with the Bucs was a series of one year deals. He may do the same thing after this season.

But if he was just looking to boost his value this year, why were the Jets his first choice?

I thought this would be a about that huge Mallet trade. We'll never get that conditional 2016 7th at this rate. Terrible trade.:D

They won IMO. Wright can be and has been good for us behind gronk. 8 less sacks as well

That's the thing most people seem to gloss over when the trade was made, the OL has been bad to dreadful in every single playoff loss for a while now.

I didn't like the trade at first. Not so much because of the trade itself, but the timing of it. I think it had alot to do with our shaky start. Much like 2003 and the Milloy trade we started out, yes, 2-2, including a loss to the woeful Redskins in game 4. Then of course we ran the table. Here's hoping the end result is similar.

I think they have exactly as many wins as they would've had with Mankins instead of Wright, and they got a pick and a bunch of cap room for that swap. Looks good to me.

Given the particulars (especially considering the OL's struggle in at least 3 games) there is certainly an argument to be made the trade hasn't been, at least as of yet, a net positive for the Patriots. With that said, "terrible" is a 'terribly' over dramatic adjective to use. Given this particular OL line up has played satisfactory 2 out of 2 as well as Wright having made an impact in multiple spots, characterizing the trade as starkly dreadful is just not accurate.

It probably cost the team 2 games, certainly cost them at least one, and hasn't resulted in anything particularly positive. The Patriots now field an OL that still has its 2 worst players from last year, but is missing its best player, and Wright has been absolutely nothing to right home about.

Yes, that's freakin' terrible.
