2015 Draft Prospect Thread

@mayoclinic

I agree that speed rusher might not be the best fit scheme wise. BB seems to prefer the ends that play with more power and can be stout run defenders. But I'd like a speed rusher on our team. Someone who can just pin his ears back and get pressure on the QB. I think it would be good to have some more variety in how we can get to the QB and a speed rusher could give us that. I think one of our defensive problems has been that we have had some slow developing pass rush.

Speed rushers tend to get over-drafted relative to the rest of their skill set. Look at Bruce Irvin (15) and Dee Ford (23). I can't see BB spending a 1st on one. Maybe a 3rd, if someone like Zac Hodges is available, but even that seems aggressive to me given other needs and priorities.

Well I guess you are correct there. It's nice with the speed rush. But they have to be somewhat stout against the run too, and it's hard to be that for lighter players. It's more of a luxury. A luxury that might be hard for us to afford with the pieces we need. A regular end which can sub in for Ninkovich and Jones even when there can come a run is probably more needed.

I want to discuss some more defensive stuff. But I'll move that over to the blueprint for defense thread.

Personally I think we have someone that fits in Jamie Collins, he always impresses me when he's rushing the passer. I just wish we used him more in that role. And that's how I think we can get a "speed rusher" onto the team; as an early down linebacker. It's why I was a fan of Marcus Smith last year and Zach Hodges this year. Of course which linebacker gets replaced is a different matter. I'm probably Hightowers biggest fan so I wouldn't want it to be him.

If Gregory of Nebraska falls to us, I got to think bb sends the card up in record time.

Why do you think that? Gregory is a fine pass rusher, but I haven't seen enough to the rest of his game to believe that BB would be all over him.

Personally, I think Oakman >> Gregory.

Not talking about Patriots fit here but I think Gregory is a potential no 1 overall pick. Best OLB prospect since Von Miller. Sorry Ochmed but there's zero chance that Gregory is in play for the Pats.

Yes i think you are correct.

It might help if there were actually some decent qb's in this draft. But even then, there is no way bb is moving up for him.

I still don't understand how Florida State's O-line is getting so much hype and respect from draft sites. Tonight v Notre Dame is the second time this year I've seen them look like crap (the first time was v Clemson).

On edit: and it isn't just they're getting overwhelmed by blitzes. They're losing way too many individual battles.

I agree. But the center was a backup and he was beat like a drum last night. However for the most part Everything they are doing is based on the qb's ability to extend plays.

Shawn Oakman… Baylor… 6'9 280lbs DE.

This guy will be a beast in the NFL. Much like Chandler Jones coming out of College… His best years are ahead of him.

Other than Brandon Scherff, probably my favorite player in this draft, and someone I would consider trading up for.

Any seen Sam Carter SS from TCU ? CBS got him at 351... Edelman on defense? Former QB, very hard worker and very smart. Going on day 2 wouldn't surprice me, but getting him late in 3 round could be a steal.

Iowa junior DE Drew Ott (6'4" 270#) has been playing in Carl Davis' shadow, but he's starting to get some notice:

Carl Davis, a week four slider, is graded as the top next level prospect from Iowa’s defensive line but teammate Drew Ott is having the better campaign. Fundamentally sound, the junior plays with great intensity and forces the action in every direction. During the loss to Maryland he posted 3 tackles with 2 for loss, while registering 2.5 sacks and intercepting 1 pass. By comparison Davis finished the game with 2 tackles. Ott leads the Hawkeyes in sacks (7) and tackles for loss (9.5) this season and is building a buzz for himself in scouting circles.

Ott was a basketball and track star in high school, and played QB, OL, TE, LB and DE. He was an academic All-American last year. Plus, he's got the beard:

Ott lines up against Brandon Scherff in practice. Scherff lauds Ott as a "technician" and for being "tough". Kirk Ferentz has also made some strong statements about how much he likes Ott.

Dane Brugler's week 8 notes mentions Indiana RB Tevin Coleman, who Manx has lauded:

Only one FBS rusher has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in each game this season: Indiana junior RB Tevin Coleman (6-0 | 210 | 4.62 | #6). The Hoosier back leads college football in rushing yards (1,192) and rushing yards per carry (8.8), ranking second behind Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon in rush yards per game (170.3). Coleman put his name on the NFL radar last year, but he has surpassed expectations in 2014 with his production, including his ninth straight 100-yard rushing performance Saturday against Michigan State's physical defense. Indiana's offense has some creative play-calling, but even with defensive coordinators game-planning for Coleman, he is able to gash defenses with his vision to find holes, body control to get skinny and burst to accelerate downfield. He has worked his way into the top-75 discussion as a NFL prospect if he decides to declare early for the 2015 NFL Draft, projecting as a mix of Darren McFadden and DeMarco Murray.

Don't even know him but that immediately interests me, a DB with the brain and experience of a QB, can be a playmaker

Reshard Cliett, a linebacker at South Florida is an interesting prospect. He's 6'2" and between 220b and 235lb depending on where you look. He reminds me of Telvin Smith in that he'll play that linebacker/safety hybrid. I've only been able to see a junior highlight tape but he looks interesting as a good coverage guy with the quickness to pressure the QB if needed. A name to keep an eye on. CBS currently rank him as a sixth rounder.

Shane Ray vaults over the OL and blocks an EP. Like Bud Dupree, Ray is another rumoured to run a 4.5 and have a 40" vert.

Most impressive part of that might be time of the game he did it. Absolutely over at that point. And, still giving 100pct.

Bud Dupree and Bernardrick McKinney will be on the same field when Kentucky plays #1 Mississippi St. Dane Brugler's preview notes:

DE/OLB Alvin “Bud” Dupree, Kentucky, rSR (6-4 | 267 | 4.63 | #2)
Kentucky's football program has produced only one top-50 draft pick since 2000 (DT Dewayne Robertson, 2003), but Dupree could change that next spring. A former tight end, the Wildcats' pass rusher moved to defense and has flourished, improving each game. Dupree has easy get-off acceleration with an explosive first step and closing burst to finish at the ballcarrier. He has moved to more of a stand-up linebacker role as a senior, which has allowed him to show off his sideline-to-sideline speed and versatility dropping in coverage, but he can be overwhelmed in the run game at times. If Kentucky has any chance of upsetting Mississippi State, Dupree will have to be active pestering Prescott in the backfield.

MLB Benardrick McKinney, Mississippi State, rJR (6-4 | 245 | 4.58 | #50)
The Bulldogs' defense has several future NFL draft picks, including McKinney who leads the team in tackles (41). He passes the eye test with a large, filled-out frame and the instincts to break down the action quickly in front of him. However, there are still areas where he needs to show improvement before NFL scouts will stamp a first round grade on him. McKinney isn't as natural in space or when asked to retreat in coverage, lacking a natural feel for pass defense at this point. Kentucky will have a tough time establishing the ground game with McKinney patrolling the line of scrimmage, but does he have the requisite skills to be an every down pro linebacker? Or is he limited to a two-down thumper in the NFL?
