2015 NFL Mock Drafts

That's one end of the spectrum. Others will probably go so far as to see a safety opposite McCourty as one of our biggest needs. I'm personally somewhere in-between. I'm still gnashing my teeth over drafting Jon Halapio over Antone Exum - I think Exum would have eventually solved that position problem for us.

One potential day 3 sleeper that I'm very interested in FCS SS Jaquiski Tartt from Stamford (6'1" 218#). Here's a 2013 highlight clip:

Obviously only highlights, and he's playing against low level competition, but he has nice size, physicality, and seems to move well. I'm hoping to see some more of him over the next few months.
On second thought, I will be willing to relent the following fourth round pick:

4th Round - E.J. Bibbs, TE - Iowa State (New England Patriots 4th Round Selection)

I have my doubts that Bill Belichick would double dip that early at the tight end position. Furthermore, the New England Patriots will most likely receive a compensatory draft selection.

McCourty - 2010 1st Round
Chung - 2009 2nd Round
Wilson - 2012 2nd Round
Harmon - 2013 3rd Round
Ebner - 2012 6th Round
Jones - 2013 7th Round (Miami Dolphins)

Six safeties currently on the 53 man roster and not one undrafted free agent.

The New England Patriots selected Jemea Thomas in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft only to be cut.

Does McCourty even belong on that list? He was drafted as a cb. Safety has been abysmal in the scouting department. I agree, I'd rather shore the trenches than see another player with a 7th round grade drafted early. Fair or unfair, that position is one the Patriots need to do a better job at scouting.

Jones was drafted by the Dolphins, and was signed by the Pats for his ST prowess, where he has excelled, so I hardly think that one counts as poor safety scouting by the Pats. And Ebner had never played the position and was also drafted for his special teams prowess. He's done quite well, and is developing nicely - as with Julian Edelman, it takes time, but Ebner shows signs that he could develop into a real safety.

OTOH, Jemea Thomas (6th round, 2014) should probably be added to the list.

Bill Belichick has traditionally utilized backup safeties as core special teams players. Think Chris Akins and Je'Rod Cherry, for example.

Quick bump to original mock (post #17):

Assumptions:

- Revis and McCourty get locked up long term
- Pats get 3rd and 6th round comp picks.
- Pats pick in the 28-32 range.
- Our extra 4th round pick from Tampa Bay is in the top half of the round.
- Pats play a hybrid defense alternating between a 3-4/4-3 Under/5-2 in base and playing about 2/3 of the snaps in sub packages.
- Pats use a lot of jumbo line packages and multiple TE sets.

1 - Eddie Goldman - DT/DE - Florida St. 6'4" 315#. Goldman played DE last year. Arik Armstead or Shawn Oakman could also be nice fits, but I'm shaking things up a bit.
2 - Cameron Erving - OL - Florida St. 6'5" 320#.
3a - Jay Ajayi - RB - Boise St. 6' 218#.
3 (comp) - Jordan Phillips - DT - Oklahoma. 6'6" 340#. Goldman and Phillips add some serious size and athleticism to the DL.
4a - Laken Tomlinson - OG - Duke. 6'3" 320#.
4b - Jaquiski Tartt - SS - Stamford. 6'1" 218#.
5 - Clive Walford - TE - Miami. 6'4" 263#.
6a - Shaquille Riddick - DE/OLB - West Virginia. 6'5" 242#. An edge player who can also play in space.
6b (comp) - Stephone Anthony - MLB - Clemson. 6'2" 245#.

I could easily see the Pats going OL/DL in the first 2 rounds, in whichever order. There are lots of interesting combinations, and the order could largely depend on who is the BVA in the 1st round. I also like the idea of doubling up on both lines. This mock is missing WR and CB, but I had to make some choices. If the Pats keep both Ridley and Vereen, then I would slot a WR in for the 3rd round where I currently have Jay Ajayi.

We know they never happen. And, you won't like the Pats picking at 23. Could happen though. 1ST Round loss to wild-card team like 09. Walter has us taking Scherff at 23 and Diggs at 55. Armstead is still on their board at 55. Scherff and Armstead would be about as much as we could ask for. In fact, if Scherff falls past 15 I'm dealing up for him if we're picking at 23.

I saw that mock and the Scherff pick. Thanks for posting it.

I'm also all for trading up for Scherff if he is on the board within 8-10 picks of where we are picking. I think he's worth it, though it would obviously depend on who else is available and how closely the Pats have players rated. Scherff-Armstead would be a dream first 2 picks, but not very realistic.

"Wet dream" scenario:

1. Brandon Scherff - OL - Iowa. 6'5" 315#.
2. Armond Armstead - DE/DT - Oregon. 6'7" 290#.
3. Jay Ajayi - RB - Boise St.
3 (comp). Jordan Phillips - DT - Oklahoma. 6'6" 340#.
4a (from TB). Laken Tomlinson - OG - Duke. 6'3" 320#.
4b. Jaquiski Tartt - SS - Stamford. 6'1" 218#.
5. Clive Walford - TE - Miami. 6'3" 263#.
6. BPA - DE, WR, LB or DB.
6 (comp). BPA - DE, WR, LB, or DB.

Greedy as I am, I still want to find a way to get Bernardrick McKinney.

I like this mock a lot. The only change I would make is south Carolina's Aj cann for Tomlinson.

Week 7 Mock:
1. Danny Shelton, DT, Washington
2. Arie Kouandjio, OG, 'Bama
3. Jeremy Langofrd, RB, MSU
3. Ramik Wilson, ILB, UGA
4. Jermaine Whitehead, FS, Auburn
4. Karlos Williams, RB, FSU
5. Damian Swann, CB, UGA
6. Jamison Crowder, WR, Duke
6. Rob Havenstein, OT, Wisconsin

Latest Pats Mock from Walter Football:
1. Kevin White, WR, WVU
2. DJ Humphries, OT/OG, UF
3. Leon Orr, DE/DT, UF

Walter's Mock, in my opinion, grabs us the #2 WR available for Brady to toy with, White is fast, athletic, strong, 6'3, and reminds me of a cross between Larry Fitzgerald and Mike Evans. I'm a HUGE fan of White but don't see BB going WR that early. I also don't see the need being as huge as listed. While White can legitimately be the next Moss for our offense, I don't think it's realistic.

Humphries is also a more BB selection than Kouandjio in round 2, being that he's a T that will likely become a G as opposed to strictly a G. G is also likely our top position of need.

I also think Orr is right up BB's ally, a versatile SEC defender for the front 7, I don't see Easley sticking at DT due to his size and more DE skillset, hopefully he can become that needed DE for our Pats. Orr can play anywhere on the front 7, BB will like this pick

I disagree on Easley. I think he has good size for a 3 tech DT. But he needs a full off season to build himself back to that size. It's hard to be the ideal DT size after missing most of a season and most of the off season and pre season.

I don't know the players but assuming we get an extra 3rd and 6th (to go along with or 4th for TB). These are the positions I draft assuming we keep Revis.

Honestly I look to trade up in all likelihood.

The only spots I think we need to look to fill in a serious manor are OG, DT, DE & LB which will be the starters & key role player spots open. That is cause you need to upgrade/replace Connolly, Wilfork, Nink & Skinner. However if you get a good DE who can start Nink can also be your 4th LB/3rd DE which would be fine and you wouldn't need to draft a LB high.

Everything else seems pretty good. Wright looks like a good flex TE. RBs are pretty much plug and play and I don't want the Pats to extend for one with a top 3 round pick. Grey is a UDFA and better than White a 4th round pick. Not an uncommon story for RBs.

After that you are filling back of the roster spots that are mostly STs or inactive anyway. 5th WR (to replace Amendola but will be inactive likely), 5th LB (STer usually), 9th OL man (inactive unless something goes wrong) & 3rd TE (Hooman does this okay as is... could improve but not a make or break).

So I don't see a lot of pressing needs. This is why I want trade ups.

Assuming we have a 1, 2, 3, 3 comp, 4 TB, 4, 5, 6, 6 comp,. That is 9 picks and 6 in the first 4 rounds.

So here is how I do it (I don't know the names yet)

#1 - TRADE pick #1 and #3 to move up to about 18-20 range if a DT is there. This is to me the most pressing need next year. Wilfork needs to be replaced likely and we need an impact DT.
#2 - TRADE - #2 #4 #6 - Move up to about 45 or higher to get a solid DE. This allows you to hopefully use Nink as a high quality back up making draft a LB high unneeded.
#3 comp - Guard - Best Guard available. Should still be a decent one.
#4 TB - TE - Hooman has not blocked well this year. Upgrade him. It is a luxury pick.
#5 - OL (developemental)
#6 comp - LB (depth move for 5th spot)

I want more DL, but I like every pick you have (assuming Matias, not Jackson). Tartt is quickly becoming a potential binky. The TE class is weak and Walford may not last that long, but that's where I've mocked him too, for now.

Outstanding.

I am starting to warm up to T.J. Clemmings, OT from Pittsburgh, so I would not object to that selection.

I would select defensive lineman with compensatory draft selections, however I will wait until the official announcement from the NFL (or AdamJT13's final analysis).

It would be tough to pass on oline or DT but McKinney would be outstanding value and "as of right now," a realistic possibility.

I'm hoping we sign a DT in free agency. There are some very good ones. I like the de's better in this draft. Scherff will go way too high it appears. I'm thinking DE or McKinney. Heck, we could take McKinney first and trade up in the 2nd for a de. We should get supplemental 3 which would allow us to deal our own 3. We haven't done will with our late two's and threes.

I am really worried about the Jerod Mayo injury.

Besides, the New England Patriots will still have three defensive lineman next season who were first round draft picks: Wilfork, Jones, Easley.

Yep, Suh and McCoy would be a moon shot but there are some others who could help the team. Stephen Paea would be nice as well as Fairley but not sure what their asking range would be coming out of their rookie contract. I'd be ok with Knighton or Rubin provided his ankle turns out ok.
