Our potential playoff opponents are built like that. Denver, Cincy and Indy

Most good teams are built around a star Qb. They have elite wr's and are more or less finesse teams.

All teams are built around the QB position, and any successful team has to have at least a decent one. I don't think Andy Dalton is particularly special.

Indy doesn't really have "elite WRs". Reggie Wayne was elite, but not any more. Hakeem Nicks isn't elite. TJ Hilton is good and a speed burner, but he doesn't have body of work yet to be considered "elite".

Cincinnati is hardly a "finesse" team.

The last 2 SB champions, Seattle and Baltimore, didn't have an elite WR among them, and certainly weren't finesse teams. SF has been to the NFCCG 3 years in a row - a power team built around a running game and a physical defense, not a finesse team, and lacking an "elite" WR.

All teams need a QB, and playmakers who make key plays. But saying that the "best" teams are "finesse" teams built around "elite" WRs is ridiculous.

I'll worry about NFC teams if we get there. What would you call the 09 and 10 Champs? I'm talking offenses. Balt hasn't run well n a few years either. We're a finesse offense. AFC Champ since 05 has been a passing team with a hot or excellent qb. Only exception 08 Steelers

If you're talking offenses only then you should be more clear. The entire league is pass-driven, so saying that a passing team is likely to be our competition isn't saying much. That doesn't equal "finesse" in my book. Baltimore, Cincy, Pittsburgh, KC and SD aren't "finesse" offenses.

I don't see why the Jags would trade him to us anyway. He's their heart and soul and they at least appear to be trying to build around him.

I never thought it was a possibility. But imagine the impact of trading for a player with a big cap hit and then having them injured. That would be really crippling.

Yep. Move Orakpo from the possible trade candidate list to the possible one-year reclamation contract one.

Another reasonable possibility is jonathan vilma. Belichick loves him.

Tedy Bruschi mentioned that in his chat today:

The one thing Bill Belichick is is unpredictable. I wouldn't put it past him to trade for a big-name player or a role player. There are a lot of need-areas that could be targeted. You could go out and get a big receiver, but what's the price? Offensive line. Linebacker ... There are also some names out there on the street who are possibilities, like linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

The most obvious choice is no one.

Yes the run D was terrible against the Jets... and yes it was equally awful in Miami and KC... but I'm not willing to call it a trend just yet. The first four weeks were marred by either really terrible coaching or Bill not being sure what he had just yet, take your pick. This past week is a throwaway considering Mayo's loss, the lack of recovery and prep time and how little depth the team had on defense.

Bill's grin at the end reminded me of the opposite occurrence last year, when they ground out a Thursday Night game against the Jets with only a pop-gun on offense. You don't go into a game played entirely in nickle with Jamie Collins as your MLB expecting to hold the other team to 2ypc. I question the game plan more than anything, but that's what happens when you are forced to scramble for an immediate solution.

If Chicago comes into Foxboro and stuffs it down NE's throats, then I'll start being concerned.

Vilma seems odd to me. While certainly an upgrade over Collins as the will in their 34, he's always been a bit of a liability getting off of blocks and I don't think he has the speed that made him so effective anymore.

I wonder what it would take to get Cody from Baltimore once he comes off the PUP.

Orakpo and Posluszny out for year. Looks like a bad luck thread.

I'd be happy for the Patriots to kick the tires on London Fletcher and Vilma. Assuming both can be fit under the cap, a rotation may help both players acclimate to the defense, gain match fitness and work into form.

Also, if Posluszny is done, would the Jags entertain a trade of Red Bryant (bastard should have signed here anyway!)?

While Vilma is a possibility, I would have thought that he'd have been brought in for a look-see before now. Belichick has experience with Vilma. The fact that Vilma is still on the street speaks volumes about what Belichick really thinks of him as a player, imho.

The depth at LB is alarming. I truly believe the Pats will be adding one or two fairly quickly because they need them just from a depth perspective. The problem is, though, who do they add? They need someone who can play the middle.. And there are very few good ones.

I don't think that Urlacher is a real possibility because he's been out of football over a year now and there is no telling what shape he's in.

Hey, that's okay for me when next year comes around in the springtime.

Brian Orakpo is more than welcome to sign here on a one year "prove it" deal in my eyes.

I agree with you that Urlacher would even be below someone like London Fletcher (another who has not played this year, but claims that he'd come back for a contender) for me. It's difficult to find someone in that mold, as you mentioned.

With Alan Branch expected to miss the next 6 weeks, they may be more hesitant to get rid of Bryant.

We all know BB is a great coach. Some of his personnel moves are baffling. We lost Spikes and Fletcher in free-agency. Signed nobody of substance to replace them. Then didn't draft any either. We came into this season with 3 NFL linebackers. We're going to pay for that over-sight.
