The defensive issue is clear, when they stop the run they are dominate, when they struggle against the run they are awful.

Week 1 @ Miami – 191 rushing yards allowed
Week 4 @ Kansas City – 207 rushing yards allowed
Week 7 vs. New York – 218 rushing yards allowed
- Record in these games = 1-2
- Average PPG allowed in these games = 33 points
- Average YPG allowed in these games = 408.6 yards

Week 2 @ Minnesota – 54 rushing yards allowed
Week 3 vs. Oakland – 67 rushing yards allowed
Week 5 vs. Cincinnati – 79 rushing yards allowed
Week 6 @ Buffalo – 68 rushing yards allowed
- Record in these games = 4-0
- Average PPG allowed in these games = 13.75 points
- Average YPG allowed in these games = 278.5 yards

Personally, I think that it is the use of the 3-4 scheme, it is not a good fit for are personnel.

Mayo is a huge loss but you could tell early the hustle wasn't there. On running plays when smith had the ball you could see revis Hightower Ninkovich all pull up and not run hard. Emotionally they could not turn it around in 4 days whereas the Jets had backs against wall.

Agree on the premise. I thought blaming the 3-4 was dead and buried by now. That's a red herring if there ever was one. They may need to change their scheme because Mayo is hurt, but that's another issue, and you can't really fit last night's game into a trend, given that they were facing a short week after losing their top tackler. Why do you need to confabulate a schematic boogieman for their problems against the run?

They were in a permanent nickel which to me makes no sense.

I agree he run D needs to be shored up. I don't think Mayo was a big reason why the run D was bad (unless with him they would have done a 4-3 more often). Just bad play for the most part.

Getting Siliga back will help and I think Skinner is a good enough run stopping LB (liability against the pass of course) that they should use him more for first downs ala poor man's Spikes.

However even if they do that they need to keep the outside contain which they have not in those 3 contest well.

I think flipping Hightower and Collins hurt the run D. Hightower is best in Mayo's mike spot.

We really need Siliga back asap. He is key to helping shore up the run with Mayo gone.

I still hope we have a trade before the deadline for a DL or LB.

I think that Chris Jones and Walker have been an able replacement for Siliga.

The issue going into the season was at backup LB and backup DE. IMHO, that is still the problem.

So, your analysis shows that we are likely to lose when we give up 190 or yards on the ground? Thank you for this insightful analysis.

Walker chasing the QB out of the pocket is impressive .... he runs pretty good for a fat guy.

Mayo is more than just a run stopper as he sets the defense and makes sure they are ready quickly.. these are big shoes to fill for relative newbies...

why did we let tommy kelly leave? he took a pay cut and we still cut him.
he's better than all of our interior lineman...also should of kept spikes. don't tell me that the relationship with BB was broken because wilfork demanded a trade earlier in the offseason but everything worked out. we couldn't afford a 1 year 3mllion dollar deal? lol kraft just saving money..

We might have to think about a heavier front 7 against run happy teams like the Jets. Whether that means more 43 or not, I don't know, but we did use to put guys as big as Deaderick at DE, even when we first switched to more 43 front. Getting one more big body in there might help the cause.

How much heavier than Wilfork and Walker should we have at DT?

Geno Smith broke containment and picked up several first downs running the ball. These plays extended drives as they were usually 3rd down conversions.

Poor 3rd down defense led to the time-of-possession imbalance which snowballed when the offense decided to not convert a single first down in the 3rd quarter.

I guess I don't think last night was any one single thing. Just a lot of aspects that taken together added up to the Jets being able to wear us down and keep it too close for comfort.

I think all the issues are correctable and with Siliga designated for return I would be reluctant to pull a big trade for someone like Sopoaga last year only to find out the in house options were better.

Speaking of 3rd down defense... the Jets didn't have to punt until well into the 3rd quarter. Holding them to 4 FGs in the first half was key to winning.

Sometimes you post like such a douche for no reason. It is disappointing because you can be a very informative poster at times but you waste so much time making meaningless posts like this only intended to diminish a fellow poster. I'm trying to think of a time I have ever swung by one of your threads to make this type of post and nothing comes to memory.

Third downs were the worst. Just like the OAK game, allowed FG after FG.

That being said, playing 4 football game in 18 days is incredible, and they had to be dead tired. I'm more likely to chalk this game up to no rest.

If we have to beat DEN to make it to the SB and we only have to worry about a mobile QB picking up first downs we will be fine.

The guy that scares me is Logan Ryan

We have Revis, Browner and Dennard. We have Arrington is the slot, if Dennard doesn't play there.

Ryan got reps because Browner is rusty, and Patricia has more faith in Ryan than we do. BUT, if Ryan isn't producing, we have FOUR corners who can play while Ryan moves to the bench.

With Ryan and Arrington as our #4 and #5 corners we have no reason to worry. Does any team have a #5 corner better than Ryan?
