Seriously. What a complete jerk. He was negotiating with the Jets while in New Orleans with the Patriots for SB31.

When he broke his own contract with the Patriots - - he took along Belichick (one of the two he complains about now for treason) and made him the HC of the NYJ for 6 days while the NFL ruled on his own contract breaking (a lot of folks still believe that BB was HC of the NYJ once - - he was TWICE).

The betrayal that stung Parcells even more than Belichick's | New York Post

Parcells knew and played the game, and played it well, so he shouldn't have been too surprised or hurt when others turned the tables on him from time to time.

Agree. I blame him for the loss to Green Bay more than any other single event. He was already out the door, and his game planning and attention simply weren't on what was happening on the field.

He followed up this cretinous move by attempting to sabotage the Patriots by putting in a poison-pill offer for Curtis Martin. Overall, Parcells has always been a narcissist, a me-first guy who talked a big game about teamwork and selflessness, on the field, but off it, he was a world-class jerk and acted completely the opposite of what he preached.

From the article, the Pious One intones:

"The breakup with Belichick had been equally testy, if not so profane. Parcells recalls reminding his heir apparent — beginning to flirt with the Patriots job vacancy — of the terms of his agreement. With 14 years of hindsight, Parcells says: “He made a deal and then tried to get out of it. A deal’s a deal. You want out? You’re going to pay. Simple.......

....The payment came in a round of negotiations with New England owner Robert Kraft. Over the course of three white-knuckle phone calls, Parcells extracted as compensation a first-round pick in the 2000 draft.”

Ummmm.......the article does not mention that, in 1997 for HIS breaking of contract, the Patriots got 3rd and 4th rounders that year, 2nd rounder in 1998 and 1st rounder in 1999.

Looks like the NFL judged HIS betrayal to be far bigger.

He used to be listed in the same breath as the great coaches of all time but when given enough rope to hang himself he left too many franchises in the lurch and stained his own reputation beyond repair.

The irony in his comments about betrayal and knowing 'who Weis is' are particularly rich but predictable coming from someone who is clearly so incapable of self-awareness as Parcells.

I don't hate Parcells because he had a big hand in bringing the Pats back from the abyss. Not a fan of his departure for the Jets.

Other than his sense of self-importance, characterizing what BB did as a betrayal when (1) he admittedly was not going to get what was promised as a head coach in terms of power (Parcells was going to hold on to the authority in his new position and BB would still be in his shadow) and (2) Weis told the truth about the situation as an insider (he 'undermined' him, he didn't lie) is just weird and does not paint Parcells in a good light, as you would expect a biography would.

If anything, it confirms BB's reason for bouncing from the team was valid. The "I forgive you, my son" stuff toward Weis and BB, again, just seems weird given the fact Parcells tagged them first. Not sure why he would see this story as speaking well of himself and authorize it.

Yup. It is the very definition of Hypocrisy.

I'm under the impression that Parcells, Belichick, and Bob Kraft have long since let bygones be bygones regarding the multi-act circus they had going way back when (Jon Kraft is possibly an exception on this). I'm willing to do the same as a Pats fan regarding Parcells' treachery, and give him credit for what he brought to the franchise I've loved for almost 50 years; his positive impact is still upon us in my view through what the experience with him taught Belichick and the Krafts.

When Tuna's book comes out you have to expect the juiciest parts to be the focus in the media, especially this week. As a general rule I find it best to recognize this kind of pathetic media click-whoring and give it the attention it deserves, i.e., zero.

I appreciate Parcells - along with Drew's- roles in bringing the Patriots franchise back to respectability.

But I'll never forgive him for bailing on this team before the Super Bowl.

The coaching they got in that SB was just about the worst I've ever seen in a championship game and when you think about that along with his remarks before he left that he would never help Kraft win a SB...that still has to raise your eyebrow to this day.

I wouldn't put the obvious past him. He really does have that big an ego.

Looking at recent pieces in the Post and other NY dailies reinforces, to me at least, a phenomenon which up until 20 years ago would have been unfathomable to me: the Patriots, in general, and Bill B., in particular, are 100% thoroughly in the heads of News Yorkers. You would think that the Giants 2 SB wins would have counteracted that, but they didn't. They are obsessed with all things Belichick, Kraft, Foxboro, Boston, New England. Anything associated with any of those entities goes up their individual and collective asses 487,321 nautical miles...and it's beautiful.

The worst thing you can call an athlete is a quitter. Parcells quit on that team. He did play a huge role in building that team. Can't deny that. But, he quit on them as they were approaching the pinnacle. Ergo, he'a a quitter.

Absolute truth. Parcells might as well have been watching a freaking rodeo that day rather than coaching his team.

Also, as I recall, he didn't even fly back with the team. That's fairly awful.

So, while I despise the way he exited the franchise, I'm more forgiving because he helped Kraft put the Patriots on to a winning path and ultimately made the Kraft-Belichick connection which we all know how well that turned out :D.

This has been a huge week for the shovels ........... lots of digging old corpses LOL.

Why is it that when the Pats are going to play this scumbag team, crap like this spews from the media?
Give me a break.

Parcells likes saying **** to the media to get his name in the paper the next day. one of the reasons he left the pats was because they Drafted Terry Glenn who he called she but then took him with him his last 4 years with the cowboys he is a grown man who craves attention like a teenage girl

Did the publisher of parcels book time the release to coincide with tonight's game?

I was working amidst some very weird Dallas Fans who thought Bill was the second coming, warned them to no avail...

Parcells is a football mercenary...

I'll never forgive him for his no being 100% focused on the SB and calling the Jets on Bob Kraft's dime, trying to get HIMSELF a new job, when he should have been doing the job he had. And now he has the balls to talk about loyalty?

BTW how many SB's did this guy win without BB and how many has BB won without Tuna?

When Parcells left to go to the Jets and became the green tuna i was one of those who were pissed at him.

But now looking back after years of mediocrity he gave us hope and took us to the SB. He changed the Patriots culture. In a day and age where coaches can get fired on a whim and owners have little patience, Parcells decided to control his own fate. I can't fault him for that. I'm not sure we get BB without seeing the Patriot culture when he was here.
