Jerod Mayo suffers knee injury

BTW, for those bagging on Volin, take a listen to Adam Jones on 98.5.

1.) He'll be having Volin on soon (can't remember what time they said)

2.) He thinks Hightower and Collins are somehow going to make up for Mayo's absence

I won't even try to measure the level of cluelessness that second point displays.

I didn't hear Volin's commentary. Did he mention who might step into his role, and did he ask anybody with the Patriots if Ninkovich is going to play more OLB? Is Skinner going to get the start inside? He's small, but has a good nose for the ball and hits his gaps hard on running plays.

The thing I hate most about Volin is that he doesn't seem to have any sources. Many of his stories quote people he sees on TV. Frequently, his pieces are riffs on things I've read here from some of the more thoughtful posters, or on pro-football-reference.com

Mayo got injured at the same point last year and we made it to the AFC championship game.

His injury sucks. He's a solid player and great communicator, but he's not an impact player like Vince or Revis.

We'll be okay.

I think the NFL needs to rethink the helmet. It wouldn't look as nice, but maybe the head protection needs to be thinner, and the the outer shell needs to be soft -- helmets are causing way too many injuries -- concussions, knee blowouts.
And also make better knee protection mandatory -- sure it will slow people down and affect movement, but as long as it affects everyone equally, there shouldn't be a problem.

Nothing else they will ever do will make a difference. as long as bigger faster guys wear weapons on their heads...

F-ing crap....so wish this wasn't the case, but it is what it is...next man (men) up.

I will miss Mayo & Ridley and I'm sure the Pats will as well but I will say this, I think they can better withstand an injury to them than they could say an injury to Revis, Gronk or Brady.

Vince was lost at about the same time. The Patriots made the AFCCG.

Can we use our heads, for a change? The goal isn't another loss in the AFCCG.

Mayo is oft maligned on this board because he is not a "playmaker", but he is a fave of this sports fan... what is not to like about a guy who comes to work, is football intelligent, does his job above average and is a cohesive force on Defense...

To hear the accolades of BB and the rest of the Patriots is rare... he also gets high praise for his efforts off of the field...

Losing Vince is a lot more significant than losing Mayo.

I really think it's the size and speed of the players now that is the reason for all the injuries. These guys are just too big and too fast.

Working out may get your muscles stronger and bigger, but your ligaments does not get any stronger or bigger.

The NFL really needs to get HGH testing done. I don't know if that can make a significant impact but at least it's a start.

Great. Let's post a gif of the Skinner sack as proof that he's an impact player. Mayo brings leadership and toughness to the run defense, but he is not as much of an impact player as is being suggested here. Besides the obvious like Revis, McCourty, Chandler Jones and Vince, I'd put Dennard ahead of him in impact since his replacement always gets lit up. I'd also put Ninko ahead of him given his all-around game. It's not like teams are going to start averaging 7 ypc with Mayo out. I doubt the pass defense suffers at all. I would feel differently if this were the Mayo of a couple years ago, but he seemed a step or two slow in coverage this year.

Tom Curran has kind of taking a step back these last two weeks with the Brady/Cap Space thing and this

Now that Mayo is gone, the Patriots can go back to Beauharnais. But (as of 10:30 Tuesday morning) he is on the Redskins practice squad having been signed last Thursday. The Patriots can sign him to their active roster but Beauharnais has some nice leverage because the Patriots kinda need him.

Steve Beauharnais is on Redskins PS squad but cannot be signed by Patriots until Week 9 -6 weeks after his injury settlement period of 2 wks

Curran posted his article today. Miguel tweeted that yesterday.

It sucks to lose Mayo but I'm holding out for Skinner. My logic sucks as to why I'm holding out for Skinner, but his school (Mississippi State) has put some pretty good players in the pros. I love those small state schools in the South that produce! And now that school is #1 in College football for whatever that is worth.

Tommy Kelly, KJ Wright, Darius Slay, Fletcher Cox, Pernell McPhee, Gabe Jackson and Jonathan Banks to name a few.

Although, Chris White went to the same school so maybe I should hold my breath. :D

The loss of Mayo wasn't as bad last year because we still had Collins, Hightower, Spikes and Fletcher to lean on. This year we don't have quality backing up our LB'ers. It's gonna be tough to replace Mayo this year.

Lol, we gave up 200 + rushing to denver last year. While that is in part of not having mayo, wilfork AND kelly...we are more definitly susceptible to the run without mayo this year.

It seems every year more players are lost to ACL injuries than any other. Anyone have any ideas on how to prevent them? Knee armor? The game is not as enjoyable when the best players are not even playing. Many have pointed out that the helmet might be to blame. I think the shoulder pad is just as big of an issue, enabling players to use the shoulder as a battering ram, launching, etc. Form tackling might become necessary once it became clear to the players that the collarbone is weaker than the knee bone.

The "hits" though would go away... and the NFL and most of its audience probably don't want that.

Obviously we were worse off without Mayo, Vince and Kelly last year, but my post was just about the positional group of LB being weaker. Either way, 2014, like 2013 is turning into a clusterfvck of injuries.

not to mention that Aqib Talib injured his hip that week, was out the next few and never returned to the same player he was before. It sucks losing mayo. but so far on the defensive side we are in better shape Right now than we were last year at this time.

Mayo's cap hit jumps to over $10million in each of the next two seasons. The team could restructure, if it doesn't mind putting some 'dead' money in the last year (2017), and 2016 is the year the cap savings would really kick in, but they'd save $4.6 on Mayo's deal with $6m in dead money if they cut him next year (not to mention the option to make it a post-June 1 cut, which would make the hits $3.6m in 2015 and $2.4m in 2016).

Yet, at the same time, Mayo is the quarterback of the defense and is the one of the main pillars of the team, so while I anticipate them restructuring his contract into a longer one, I really doubt they'll simply cut him.
