We're On To The 1-5 New York Jets

The Jets are pretty much a d-line and nothing else. They have three great players in Wilkerson, Richardson, and Harrison. Davis is a good LB.

Their offense is crap. Ivory is good when he is on, but he is inconsistent. I disagree with the OP, Mangold has been mediocre this year.

I don't expect many surprises from the Jets. They don't have the time to install many wrinkles since they really only have today and tomorrow to prepare for the game (Wednesday is travel day so they might have a short walkthrough and that is about it).

If I was a betting man, I would say this will be yet another Thursday night blow out, but I could see the Jets making it a game.

I don't know what has happened to our tempo on offense, but it has gone from hyper-hurry-up to near-delay-of-game slow.
Offense is still unsettled personnel wise. Hard to go hurry up until all 11 are on same page .Right oline /WR are still getting into the system.

Jets are always tough. Our most painful Jets loss happened in Gillette.

You do up tempo all game and you risk burning out yourself as much as you might the defense. It isn't smart running an uptempo offense all the time.

Looks like Jets RG Winters tore his ACL and CB Millner his Archilles against Denver

Good news! The "best corner in the game" Dee Milliner is out for the season so the Patriots receivers won't have to play against him and get shut down. We might actually be able to win this now without that shutdown corner they just lost!

I hear the ticket holder in section 304, row 12, seat 11 who won "Win the starting CB job with the NY Jets" contest is one hell of a coverage CB. So I think the Pats are in trouble there.

Saw this interesting stat about the Jets D and Rex, posted over on JI.

Just shown on Jets postgame:

PROOF of how crappy a defensive coach he has been.

In four of six games so far here is the result on the opponents final drive of the 1st half:

GB 10 plays 97 yards Touchdown
Det 5 plays 47 yards Touchdown
Chargers 12 plays 91 yards Touchdown
Den 9 plays 80 yards Touchdown

That is why we lose and why his defense is so stupidly overrated.

I'd like to see the Jets' front seven pursuing sideline to sideline in this game. They're the best chance New York has to pull off the win since their secondary is garbage. Get some misdirection plays, outside runs, screens, quick hitches and slants going to wear them out. Go up tempo from the get go and get them sucking wind.

Right on the money, this ios exactly the approach they should take.

I think this is more a reflection of their defensive talent in the secondary than of Ryan's abilities as a defensive coach. While i don't think he is a very good head coach i do think he is exceptional at scheming for good offenses and he has come up with some of the best defensive schemes for disrupting very good Patriot offenses over the years and I expect the same on thursday, although ironically they are not as strong on paper as they have been they are more diverse than in recent years and could pose more of a challenge than they have been the last 6-8 times. Their front four is as good as any in football, I am deeply envious of it and long for the days when they had 3 DL who all required a double team as that literally dictates what offenses have to do to deal with it.

This is why power rankings and projections about winning Super Bowls are utterly meaningless. The NFL season is a battle of attrition and the last team standing is almost always the team that has the best luck dealing with their injury situations. And while the Patriots have definite areas where they are weak in terms of depth they are also among the best suited to deal with injuries year in and year out.

I know you are essentially kidding but i do believe the Jets preseent real problems and this is going to be a really tough game for the Patriots, however imo that is going to be the case every week this season. They aren't going to have any easy weeks this year. This isn't your 7 year old's Patriots.

I'm inclined to agree with you, Ivan. The talent level, other than the front 4 just in't there. But, part of that is on Rex too. Overall, he's been a complete failure as a head coach. And I for one am hoping they offer him a lifetime contract to stay in the position.

Short week against a divisional opponent. No way this is a blow out. Pats by 13.
Unless Geno has a 3-4 pick meltdown game in him, which I prey to Baby Jesus that he does. And that Rex sticks with him the whole game!!!

I'm going too. We got poured on at last years Jets game. :( As soon as Bruschi was done at half time, the sky opened up.

I sure hope the forecast improves - need a loud and rowdy stadium - not everyone hiding inside.

I can't fathom why anyone would be weary of this game anymore than the Bills game. Buffalo is the superior squad between the two and the Patriots just handled them in their house which was significant, given the noise and context surrounding the game (division lead on the line, new ownership, etc.).

The Jets are highly overrated on defense. Yes, their D-line is disruptive, but with the way Rex Ryan likes to call defenses and the lack of any viable DBs to allow him to be exotic in his gameplan the Jets defense is fool's gold. Their defense isn't any better than Buffalo, and most certainly not Cincinnati's, both of whom the Patriots have hung over 35 on in back-t0-back weeks.

Division games are always tough, yes, but the Jets are a meek team and the game in Buffalo was a way more difficult spot. The only way the Patriots won't win this game by 10+ is if they come flat and overlook NY. That's highly unlikely to happen with the team having gained significant momentum over the last two weeks and will look to continue that against a significantly inferior Jet squad than the ones who played the Patriots tough in past.

In other words, the Patriots are coming in flying high on a short week in front of night-game home crowd on national TV against a team that is reeling and who's coach has one foot out the door already. Patriots by double-digits, easily.

It's pretty easy to see, really, even if you just look at the injury issues:

Already shaky OL + Connolly concussion + Stork concussion = concern
Already thin LB corps + Mayo injury + Hightower injury = concern
Already struggling running game + Ridley injury = concern
Injured Brady + excellent Jets DL = concern

You could apply these same concerns to the Bills game as well and the Patriots were able to prevail against a better team in a tougher spot. I can't see why they wouldn't be able to do so again on a short week at home.

The Bills defensively offer very similar match-up problems as the Jets - great D-line and shoddy secondary (the Jets are much worse in area). The offense is clicking right now and was able to play competently against Buffalo's great front 4. I expect that to continue this week. The Jets are not better on defense than Buffalo or Cincinnati.

Also, Hightower probably suits up on Thursday. He was a GTD on Sunday after all.

No, you really couldn't apply those concerns to the Bills game. Mayo, Ridley and Connolly played in the Bills game, and the Patriots weren't trying to find substitutes for starters on a short week.
