New England Patriots disappointments for the 2014 NFL Season to date:

Dobson, Boyce, Thompkins, Amendola

One gone
One on the practice squad
One invisible
One falling behind LaFell

Watching Belichick over the years, it seems he tries to increase the odds of filling a roster vacuum by adding multiple options rather than putting all his eggs in one basket. So, in addition to second year WR Dobson (who might or might not develop into a legitimate NFL receiver), he signed a veteran with four years of consistent production (LaFell) and took a flyer on a practice squad kid with impressive athletic skills (Tyms).

I doubt that Belichick really cares which one(s) end up being the bigger contributors. He'll let their performance and production dictate playing time and roles.

I am still hoping that Dobson can become a full-fledged contributor but I have never been high on him. I thought he was overdrafted and showed nothing special outside of his height and a fast 40yard dash. He was touted with having amazing hands and then went on to drop everything his rookie year. That one Steeler game didn't change my mind.

Once again, really hoping he succeeds but I have accepted that he might not get any better than what he is right now. In my mind he is on equal ground with Decker. Don't forget many people didn't like Decker before Peyton put him on the map.

Who is many people? Decker led the Bronks in receptions and yards with Tebow as QB. The fact that he had won Manning's trust speaks volumes. That Jets offense is a disaster. He never should have signed with them.

Dobson was very average his rookie year. Some ups and downs just like everyone else. The fact that he hasn't built on it has been a disaster.

The many people are the people that bashed every decision McDaniels made outside of the Demaryius Thomas pick. I'm just saying Decker wasn't feared before Peyton got there and became overrated pretty quick. And Manning has shown he can work w/ average talent the last few years such as Collie, Blair White, etc. I'm not saying Decker or Dobson are bad but are overhyped. And when it comes to Dobson you view it as a disaster that he hasn't built upon last year, but I feel that no one should have seen it as a disaster in the first place since he was average even in college. That is all.

If you look at his two drafts, outside of the epic fail of the Tebow pick, in terms of picking NFL talent that has stuck, hes done ok to pretty good.

Decker was overrated?Back to back 80 catch 1000 yard double digit TD seasons are overrated?

You can count the number of 100 yard receivers Manning has thrown too on one six fingers. Harrison, Wayne, Stoakly, Clark, Thomas and Decker. Thats good company.

You just said that Decker was overrated.

Dobson was a reasonably high draft choice who got through his rookie season. He has the physical tools to be competitive in this league and has regressed and been passed on the depth chart.

Man, this goes hard but there is no reason to argue against it necessarily. The truth is Dobson was touted for having amazing hands and not having a single drop that last year in school, but he was dropping things left and right. Whether it's rookie jitters or whatever, he just was not making the plays. Now he's just not being used. I have no idea what to think, but your post is pretty convincing, IMHO.

will dobson have 250 yards receiving this year? i highly doubt it.

talk about a regression.

Hell, I could've caught 80 balls in back to back seasons in that offense, with Peyton Manning and a loaded all-star surrounding cast.

Yes, Eric Decker is severely overrated once you take Manning away. He still has obvious pluses and would make a fine WR2 or WR3 on certain teams with solid quarterbacks, but there are really only a handful of those.

He'd probably catch 50-60 balls on a handful of other teams, but so did Danny Amendola. Those who were throwing around numbers of 10m dollar AAV in the offseason for Decker were seriously blowing my mind with their projections.

Decker as a WR1 is overrated.
Decker as a WR2 is not.

When BB set out to rebuild the receiver corps at the 2013 TC, there was absolutely nothing there, except a couple of super-annuated veterans, and a undependable headcase, plus a pair of big and small TEs.

A year later the receiver corps has more talent then can fit on the roster and even Aperp has been replaced.

Remember when the Pats won Superbowls with a tiny smurf and and unheralded 7th rounder and not much else? I don't understand why everyone says there are no weapons, today.

"Talent" is always cut, from every roster, and Hernandez hasn't been replaced.

Healthy scratch. Not sure what's going on.

inactive for a third game.

so much for the 2nd year jump.

I don't know that he's really regressed. Foot surgery + wide receiver is never a good combo.

Simple. They won't sit Amendola and Easley looks like he is good to go tonight. So they would rather have the extra DL than WR.

Inactive again.

Well then, I'm now more certain that he won't be a legitimate nº 1 WR. It's time to move on

Not so simple. Tyms is active.
