So, in the news for the NFL today, Colin Kaepernick was fined $10,000 for wearing Beats headphones because the NFL has an endorsement deal in place with Bose. Meanwhile, in other news, Julius Thomas was fined $8,000 for an illegal chop block that injured a player...

I guess that makes sense in Goodell's world. You would think that, with the crucial catch campaign the NFL is running this month, they would have praised Kaepernick for sporting the pink headphones at the presser but I guess the almighty dollar and not pissing off their advertiser is far more important to this clown. I guess @Tunescribe was right about the whole "crucial catch" charade.

Wow. Poignant post.
And every time a player is fined for using a product, that is product placement and advertising that is worth every penny X10. Beats should pay every NFL player $20K to do this.

The NFL's pink breast cancer campaign is and always has been about $$$, pandering to the female demographic with the faux claim: "See, women? We're big macho guys but we care about you!" Then the league pushes pink fan gear, etc., while scrambling to cover its butt over domestic violence fiascoes. If the NFL REALLY wanted to make a difference, it would have a yearly prostate cancer awareness campaign. But where's the money in that?

I don't have a problem with this fine. Sponsorships help pay the players salaries; so the players union could choose to include a 'no imposed sponsors/advertising' clause into their union contract in exchange for a smaller cut of money if they wanted to

What are we really complaining about here. Kap deserves his fine don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Obviously keeping its players healthy should be a priority but an on field penalty during the heat of game so long as it's not part of a bigger pattern is not worse than spitting in the face of your boss and one of the league's top advertisers. I am guessing people who work for Nike don't generally show up to work in adidas.
But it makes for a good headline so let's ignore what really went on there.

Yeah, this sort of fine was bargained for in the CBA. I don't see the issue.

Having to listen to music through Beats is punishment enough.

Weren't the players told about this a couple of weeks ago too? So continuing to wear them after that is just stupidity on his part. A fool and his money are soon parted etc.

There are multiple issues with these two fines. Please tell me you see this and you don't need me to point it out to you.

I've posted that same opinion regarding the NFL, breast cancer and prostate cancer here for years. Some small efforts by individuals like ex-Patriot great Mike Haynes who is a spokesperson for prostate cancer awareness. I've watched it kill people I know.

Meanwhile the only indicator we have aside from the mostly too late finger in the butt exam is the PSA test with its false positives problems. Better a false positive vs missing a Gleason gone wild in your groin.

The NFL is a for-profit enterprise. Its reason to be is to make as much money as possible for its member franchises. Protecting the almighty advertising dollar is part of that mission. In this context, I really can't see how the Kaepernick fine is objectionable.

As for the Thomas fine, although the outcome was bad, to me the hit was not particularly vicious and didn't look like it was intended to injure, so in my opinion nothing more than a small fine was warranted.

I actually applaud the league office in penalizing based upon the act, rather than the result. Too often, they do the opposite.

Rules are rules and Kaepernick was blatant in breaking them, the chop block happened in the heat of the moment during a competitive situation, Kaepernick was premeditated in putting on headphones he was aware he was not permitted to wear and then sitting in front of the national media with them. I have no issue with the fine, especially considering Kaepernick was aware of the rules because in this image he had tape over the headphone logo.

I would add I am fine with the fine because Kaepernick consistently takes the podium dressed like am 16 year old standing at the bus stop, when other QBs and players are dressed professionally. That and being defiant fits his M/O as the Miami Dolphins hat and many other actions have shown.

I hate everything you stand for.

There is a couple of logical failures at play here. One simply has to engage his or her brain...

1. The crucial catch campaign has been shoved down our throats since late September. Kaepernick wearing pink headphones should have been something that was praised by the NFL.

2. One of Goodell's biggest claims since he took over as the Commissioner is that he's "all for" player safety... and yet a guy that executes a chop block (one in which Arians said was the dirtiest play he's ever seen) that injures another guy is given a lesser fine than a guy that wore the wrong brand name headphones.

In the end, even if you're fine with Kaepernick being fined for this, a WTF flag should be raised, given the fact that he's being fined more than a guy that injured someone else. The "heat of the game" has nothing to do with it unless you're ready to apply that logic to a guy like Jack Tatum, for example.

If I was an NFL QB, I would wear only a jock strap to the podium after a given game.

And some Sony headphones, of course.

If it was an isolate incident with Kaepernick I would agree, but he seems to make a point to intentionally act above the rules. Therefore, I look at the fine as being more of about his body of work as a punk who does and says what he wants whenever he wants no matter the determent it causes to his team and the NFL. I am not a fan of anything I have seen from Kaepernick, I will reframe from saying I think he is a bad person because I do not know him personally but the things I read and see of him are not something I respect or admire. For that reason I do not care if he was fined, he deserves it as far as I am concerned.

In short I do not agree with the fine for the specific behavior, I just agree that Kaepernick merited some type of punishment for his behaviors over the last year or so.

Dressing a certain way after a game isn't acting "above the rules," it's deviating from a norm. And in many cases the actual rules are pretty stupid (wear a different color sock? enjoy this fine punk dirtbag)

As for detrimental to his team, the Niners have been consistently one of the best teams in the NFL throughout his tenure. Not sure how him wearing a different set of headphones or dressing a way that you don't like is detrimental to his team.

But that's not the case. If it were, it would have been cited. The NFL fined him simply for wearing the wrong headphones and, in the process of doing so, fined him more than a player that injured someone with a block that you know not to make in Pee Wee.

His behaviors over the last year or so are a red herring. They're totally irrelevant to the topic at hand

Well said. Thanks for this.

First of all he has not been one of the best, he is not even in the top 15 of QBs in the NFL. Second, I am not talking about his clothes however unprofessional they maybe, I wear things that he wears so do not think that I am in a pair of wranglers right now with a button up flannel shirt tucked in commenting on that look as if it is wrong. It is just unprofessional there is a time and a place for everything, but even so that is not detrimental, his other actions are however like being connected to sexual assault cases, parading around South Beach in a Dolphins hat, twitter rampages, telling the media he signed a contract to play football not talk to them. He needs to grow up, and fast, to whom much is given much is expected. Compare Kaepernick to Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck, and the other QBs in his age bracket and he is the immature one without even a question.
