Well campers, the lesson tonight is pretty clear. Things are never as bad as they are being made out to be by the media/experts/whiners/and complainers. NOR are they ever as good as we hope during a "good week". It really is a week by week event, where you cannot take too much from a previous game, good or bad. Here are some humble observations from tonight.

1. The highlight of the night for me was BB's post game presser. He gave the media NOTHING. It was clear (at least to me) that he really was pissed, not only with the expected "the sky is falling" stories at the beginning of the week, but also the bogus (AGAIN) Herald stories about Dobson's clashing with Josh, and Brady losing the locker room. You could almost hear the FU's behind his every cliched response. It was classic. :D

2. I haven't been on the Stork band wagon much, but you had to love what you saw tonight. The kid looks like a keeper.

3. I mentioned in a post back in TC, that Ryan Wendell has by far the best first step of the Pats' C''s in the run game. Its even quicker when he doesn't have to snap a ball. Even though he's still undersized, that explosive first step allows him to move bigger DLmen back off the LOS. It was the kind of push I expected from a bigger and more powerful Marcus Cannon, and didn't see. Well the Pats got that push from everyone on the OL, and over 200 rushing yds later, we can see the results.

4. Who would have thought the return of Ryan Wendell, the most beleaguered of ALL our OLmen, would mark a return to good pass protection for Tom Brady. IIRC the only sack of the game came when Gronk missed his block, while the rest of the OL was doing well. Don't forget that this was probably the BEST DL the Pats have played against thus far. Go figure?! I mean you have to wonder, how the pass protection can look so bad for the last 4 weeks, and suddenly in week 5 look so good.....against good opponent.

5. This offense COULD be dynamic down the road. All the pieces are there. Ridley and Vareen are both good RB's and the WR's can get better as the season progresses. Finally Gronk looked like he's ready to break through and get back to being the best TE in the league , while Wright continues to make progress. Good to see Edelman get deep twice tonight, even though neither ended up as completions. Our little former QB is fast becoming more than just a "slot receiver".

6. A small negative was the lack of consistent pressure against Dalton. Rarely did we create any hurries without having to rush 5. I'd like to see use use zone or overload blitzes more. I don't think we need to rush 5 or 6 to create more pressure, rather I'd like to see it done with more disguise and deception. BTW, nice rush by Chris Jones on his sack.

7. McCourty went out late in the 2nd quarter and it was clear (at least to me) that he was missed in that second half. On the first Bengal TD the CB had no help over the top on a pass down the middle of the field, right in McCourty's wheelhouse. Of course I don't know what coverage they were in on that play, but I'd like to think that McCourty would have been around that play, had he'd been in.

8. Also on the injury concerns are Easley and Revis. I didn't notice Easly go out, and the fact that I ddin;'t notice him being out disturbs me. So far he hasn't made a big impression on me yet. Revis looked to me that he hurt his shoulder on his hit, yet it was called a hamstring injury. I know he had a history of hamstring problems with the Jets. Regardless, he came back in the 4th Quarter, so it couldn't have been too bad, but look for him to be "questionable" all week.

9. If it weren't for the officials the Pats would have scored well over 50 this week. Its been a long time since I've seen a game where the officiating was not only so bad, but so lopsided as well. The Pats had 13 for 114 yds, while the Bengals only got called 4 times for 37. This disparity is especially concerning since the Pats were the home team. Now of course some of the calls were correct. But way too many were really head scratching. Among the worst was the PF on Easly for blocking after a fumble that was eventually called "not a fumble" and the phantom illegal contact call on Revis that cost him a pick.

What was more troubling was the fact that there were a number of really ticky tack calls being made on the Pats, yet when the Bengal DB's were making similar contact, it was let go. So many flags where the receiver was NOT impeded by the supposed contact. Now I'm not usually a referee complainer, but these guys were off the charts bad.

10. Finally, on to Buffalo. These aren't the Bills of the past. They have a first class defense and a bunch of offensive weapons. I know Kyle Orton doesn't exactly send chills down the spines of Pats fans, but with that defense playing as well as it has been, he doesn't need to be great. This is our FOURTH road game in just 6 starts, which is followed by 3 home games, so a win there and we can start to create some momentum at home.

Well, I hope some of the angst has lessened here in Patriots' Nation. I hope the mediots are chastened, and I wish to God the Herald would have the integrity to print a retraction and apology for their appalling stories this weekend, though putting the Herald and integrity in the same sentence is pretty appalling in and of itself. So I'm not holding my breath ;). However just as we can't take too much from the loss in KC, we shouldn't get too full of ourselves because we bllew out a very good Bengal team a week later.

This team is STILL in its formative stages. LOTS of players have LOTS of room to make improvements. This teams character was sorely tested this week and they passed with flying colors, but it was only ONE week. Lets see if the improvement continues

It seems like the guys who contributed strongly to the win today on offense all came out of the game pretty healthy. But a lot of the top defensive talents have been compromised by injury. If I want to be pessimistic, that's what worries me.

2. I haven't been on the Stork band wagon much, but you had to love what you saw tonight. The kid looks like a keeper.

Stork, Wendell and Wright were all exciting. We learned good things about those three.

Wendell doesn't handle big guys too well, but at RG, he looked like our best option for the year. I am excited to see this line stay together and gel. I hope people don't get too upset when Buffalo and New York beat them, because those teams handle every OL.

Nice summary I don't remember any comments about the Easley's injury. Revis and Brady have a great respect for each other we need to sign Revis next season when he is a free agent. He will be expensive but we can use the money we save by dumping Amedola this coming off season. Buffalo will be tough we usually split with them each season that can't happen this season we need them both.

I expect we will activiate Browner and Tyms today maybe they will play in Buffalo

It must be tough to know that you have to post these in a timely fashion in order to prevent us all from breaking out the corpse-sniffing dogs.

I think Belichick's anger with the media begins and ends with the comments surrounding McDaniels/Dobson and Brady. In his own way I think he's fiercely protective of his people and the uncharacteristic response to the stories about Dobson pooping on McDaniels' car, or whatever it was, is proof of that.

I also noticed that it was Belichick who was one of the first to greet Dobson coming off the field after he made his catch tonight.

Revis was definitely grabbing his hamstring right after the play.

Also, too: Jerome Borger leads the worst officiating crew in the NFL. I hated him last week, and I can't even remember what game he worked.

I also noticed that it was Belichick who was one of the first to greet Dobson coming off the field after he made his catch tonight.

I noticed that too. He was quite public with it.

I'm thinking that Hightower's absence was a big part of that. Get him healthy and back on the end and we ought to see some more sacks/hits/etc.

This game was a huge helping of STFU to all of the mediots and detractors who have made a lot of statements in the past week...

The only concern was the number of penalties, and if they were negated the blowout would have been more significant...

The Easly comments remind me of Jamie Collins last year, when Collins was brought along slowly and showed up by the end of the season.. I did notice some QB pressure by him..

2) Stork is beautiful at center and he seems to have some fire in his belly.

7) McCourty and Revis injuries are huge. I pray we get them back soon. If Mc is out, maybe Browner to SS and Harmon to FS?

9) The officials were awful tonight. I predicted it pregame, and they were every bit as bad as I thought.

You got that one right Ken. Like you I normally try to see both soides of the refereeing, but this time even I was forced to concede that bad refereeing was the only thing keeping the Bengals in the game for a while. All the more kudos for the Pats for getting the resounding win anyway.

I think one of the reasons this week did go so much better, was the fact, that with the Bengals (like with Houston or the early year Colts) you know exactly what they will try to do, they just do it very well. This is a team setup which has always suited Bellichick and Brady, as the can dissect it during the week and then only execute their game plan on sunday.

1: I loved the post game presser too, it made me laugh. It was a verbal middle finger to the press. The only thing that would have made it better is if he made a "We are on to Buffalo" comment.

2: The play of the OL was encouraging. Wendell is one of our best run blockers. A quick first step and not having to snap the ball seems to play to his strengths at RG. It was nice to have a center in Stork that doesn't give up ground in the middle. Overall I thought the OL played as a unit, rather then disjointed effort that's been the norm this year.

3: Nice to see an offense where Edelmen wasn't needed to carry the majority of the load. Give Brady time and we have Edelmen, Gronk, Wright, LaFell, Vereen as legit targets to throw to. Add in Dobson and the occasional throw to Devlin and we have enough receivers to be better then last year. If the OL can run block like they did today, we should be competitive offensively.

4: The injuries to McCourty and Revis don't seem to be of the serious variety. McCourty was still on the sidelines and not in the training room during the game and Revis came back to play. Hopefully it wasn't a shot from a syringe that enabled Revis to keep playing.

5: With the injuries to Jones and Hightower, the pass rush was lacking a bit but the defense gave gave Dalton no easy throws to make. The run defense was solid, a big difference from last week.

6: The officiating was truly terrible and to say that after the Pats won and put up 40+ points says how bad they really were. The Easley blocking penalty was a really, really bad call.

7: Buffalo is going to be a good test of the revamped OL.

8: It was nice to see Brady run when he had too. Other games he would avoid running and just throw an incomplete pass, even if he had a wide open path to a First Down or TD. I also thought he was a lot less conservative with his throws. The throws were much tighter to coverage and the receivers were better able to get their hands on the ball.

9: I thought that one of the reasons that the Pats had trouble in KC, was Brady's inability to change the play at the LoS due to the crowd noise. Brady's ability to read the defense and change the play and protections here at home made for a much more efficient offense.

I'm still going to be unsure about this OL until I see how they react when our run game is not effective like it was today.

I guess it's safe to come back in here after all the prognosticators of doom should be put to rest for another week or so. It was great to see the OL put up a good game and remind people that the Patriots are still a team that competes. And props to the defense for a good rebound game, nice complete game for the whole team.

A couple thoughts of my own:
1: Wright might actually make allow us to get back to using the 2 TE formations. Can't have too many weapons or plays that a defense has to prepare for.

2: Did anyone else notice Dennard getting players into position on defense? Granted it seemed more for coverage reasons, but I was surprised by this.

3: Loved our running and Ridley covering the ball up with 2 hands when he knows he may be tackled my multiple defenders.

4: I think the think the patriots did best was getting out of bad positions with the penalties against them and that run on 3rd and 16 (got 19 yards) was not something anyone would have felt possible a week ago.

5: We ran 82 plays to their 48 plays. 30 of our 82 went for first downs and we had only 1 three and out (unless you feel the need to add the kneeldown to close out the game). Though we had (2) 4 and outs as well, but averaged 7.1 plays per possession/

Jets fans on suicide watch after Revis post game interview.

Stupid question but when McCourty went out who were the safeties? Chung and Harmon?

Stupid question but when McCourty went out who were the safeties? Chung and Harmon?
Right. That's one thing that wasn't mentioned last week when talking about the safeties. In previous games, Harmon wasn't getting a ton of defensive snaps and all five other safeties get more ST snaps, but he's the only backup FS on the roster.

-It was TE night with 16 targets. Clearly Cincy was unprepared for Wright as he roamed free on those posts....clearing out the LBs which opened up the run. How athletic is Wright....we have our TE dynamic duo back though Wright is more a speed TE vs AHern who worked the agility/strength skill set. Gronk...lots of good...a few whiffs....but rounding into form without a doubt.
-Scoring on the first drive....Thought I was dreaming...and with such ease. Reminded me of those games vs the vaunted Steeler teams where Brady just shredded 'em out of the shoot.
-What was Cincy doing the last 14 days? Reading their press? FLAT
-Is Dennard the key to press coverage? BB willing to get in WR faces only when Dennard suits up? Seems so
-Revis out...Ryan in...1 pass...TD..... Pay the man
-Last year...Dobson, Thompkins, Boyce were the Pats WR future...this year......Who dat?
-Proud of the crowd...loved those signs

Really liked the fake WR screen/quick throw to Edelman, then tossing it just over the rapidly closing linebackers. Great call!
