But isn't the cap hit a sunk cost? You get hit with that whether he's on the roster or not, but if he's not it opens up a roster spot.

Trust me, I wouldn't lose sleep if Amendola was cut as I was typing this post. It's just the fact of the situation. If Amendola wasn't carrying around that cap hit he would have been gone or close to gone already. The Pats are paying him a lot of money and do not want to take the cap hit in releasing him so they might as well keep him around* and pray that he starts producing.

* I do not think he will stay around for his entire contract here, but there isn't a chance he gets let go this season

I think this is right:
Signing bonuses get to be amortized in the cap over the life of the contract. If the player is released and picked up on waivers than his remaining signing bonus counts against the cap that year. If he clears waiver than the team gets to spread it out over the next two years.

For instance, DA got a $6M signing bonus on a 5 year contract. NE takes a cap hit of $1.2M/year for the signing bonus. If they release him and he is picked up then they have to take the remaining ($4.8M) this year. If he clears waivers, then they can spread the $4.8 over the next two years. Something like that. So releasing him can have a big impact on this years remaining cap space.

Someone can chime in if I made a mistake.

so why not activate Browner ? I understand he will not start but he should be on the roster if only for just a few late game snaps

IMO, a 55-man roster for another week was just too much for BB to pass up.

Lame attempt at trolling.

Pats have until 4pm on Monday to either activate or release Browner and Tyms. The 2-man roster exemption was for 1 week only.

1) In camp and in the off-season many, many of us though that Thompkins and Boyce were battling for the last roster spot. He never looked like one of the top4 receivers.

2) The "battle" continue through the pre-season. Neither seemed worthy of a spot. The team seemed to like Tyms for the 5th spot, but he was suspended.

3) Thompkins won the battle with Boyce and had 3 games to prove himself (well actually 4 if Belichick wanted).

4) Thompkins showed nothing.

5) Belichick declared an end to the experiment with Thompkins.

6) Likely, Tyms will still be on the roster on Tuesday.
=======================
Just BTW, someone posted that Belichick will use the roster spot to activate LB Davis, since Hightower is hurting.

I got a feeling KT will be back and I hope that he does. With or without him, I could still see the team activating Tyms.
Or, does this mean the return of veterans such as Branch or Collie?

I guess that Pats are thinking that if KT is picked up elsewhere, he won't stick their either, and they'll be able to bring him back later.

But the other extreme is that they've totally given up on him, and allowed the "We'll bring you back to the PS if we can" quote to get out so as to help him land with another team.

I.e., we have little evidence as to what the true situation is. :)

And we all know they are keeping Browner...Tyms..i hope so

Maybe they're saving him to be cut later, along with Tyms. o_O:mad::eek:

Well, I guess I could take down my signature. Surprised by this. True, he hasn't done much but as a young receiver with upside, I don't see why you risk losing him. How quickly that clutch catch against the saints is forgotten

There is no "risk". Thompkins has had a 2 offseason try out, and has been on the roster for one season plus 3 games. The team has made its assessment. And yes, he did have one memorable catch.

This season has my head spinning. I don't remember seeing so many changes during the regular season before. It's just one head scratcher after another. I think this "musical chairs" roster is contributing to the lack of consistency on the field. When the heck is the pre season going to end? Hopefully if/when it is figured out, we get a solid cohesive unit. If there's a bright side, IMO, is maybe when we do have a starting line up, it's later in the season, when a tight, healthy team is needed most. I was really hoping the KT release was to bring in Tyms. He has as much of a chance of performing good as anyone else.
Edelman is carrying this WR set. And that's a big gamble
