Danny Amendola admits to offseason groin surgery

Folks are great about re-writing history.

Welker left. (we need not discuss why this happened or whether it could have bee prevented)

Edelman, our injury prone backup to Welker, was a free agent, who the patriots weren't really sure they would re-sign. He ended up with a minimal contract. Obviously, other teams could have easily signed him. There was little interest.

With Welker gone, and Edelman a free agent, Belichick had an opportunity to sign Amendola. Obviously, in hindsight, we should have kept Lloyd. But the world doesn't operate in hindsight. Amendola was working out fantastically with Brady in the preseason. This was a great match. Amendola's first game was awesome. Amendola was injured, and then the decline. I think that signing Amendola was a prudent decision.

The OPEN question is whether Amendola should have been on the 53 this year. He could have been cut, with a bunch of dead money, but he could have been cut. Belichick must believe that Amendola can be a contributor this year. That remains to be seen. Given his performance so far, the fact that he is still playing so many reps is damning statement. It shows just how little faith the team has in Thompkins. I give Dobson a bit of a break because he is injured.

Now Danny Amendola can admit he sucks.

The Open question is how the Patriots have ****ed up the management of Amendola's injury.
Basically, they could've addressed it immediately after week 1, and Amendola would've been ready for the playoffs. Instead we got an Amendola that was hobbled and useless.

They could've addressed it at the start of the offseason, instead they tried rehab -- which in hindsight and I bet a lot of doctors would've said before hand -- was a bad decision. So he had surgery late in the offseason.
And instead of giving him time to fully heal so he's ready for the playoffs, he's once again playing hobbled and might be useless all of this year.

I don't want to see this thread devolve into a re-hashing of old trades, so let me see if I can bring back the focus.

We all saw that Amendola was a different player once he came back from the Buffalo injury. He struggled to get open, and he became little more than an afterthought by the end of the season.

What I think is more worrying for us is that rest was supposed to solve this problem. Instead, he had to have offseason surgery. He's clearly either not back from the surgery, or just not back. Either is a problem, but the latter is a huge issue moving forward. If he just needs time, we can hope for the recovery to quicken its pace. If this is going to be an all-season, or all-career, thing for him, though, that's a whole other kettle of fish.

If DA is on the mend, it makes it even more suspect that both KT and Dobson were inactive last week.

I gave up reading the bickering back and forth going on. I think my first sentence says enough.

If DA is coming back from injury, why the hell is he getting the activation (let alone start) over KT and Dobson?

Lots of things simply aren't adding up on the offensive side of the ball. From the Mankins trade (and Wright not playing) to the Devey experiment to the brain dead play calling/personnel packages. It has been ugly.

I think that the coaching staff is much more leery about Dobson and Thompkins that the majority of the posters here are.

I think we looked and saw "good rookie effort" last year, and they saw something a bit different.

Either way, they'll be forced to play one or both in the coming weeks, so we'll have our answer as to how much these guys have to offer. It shouldn't be too difficult for them to be a better option than Amendola, even if Edelman/Gronk/LaFell/Vereen remain as the probable top 4 options still.

You don't worry that Edelman might have a screw loose?

He definitely has a screw loose, if he didn't he would be Danny Amen-absent...

sounds like you can't wait til he's Danny Amendover...:p

Amendola participated in OTA, training camp, and the preseason; he is not on the mend still he would have been limited if he was not 100% or was still rehabbing during at least OTAs. As far as Dobson and Thompkins go, I think the team feels Thompkins is not good enough to be active on game day and apparently, Dobson mouthed off to the great McDaniels and that results in a 2 game inactive streak.

This is where the problem lies in my opinion. Yesterday a poster opened a thread about Carlos Dunlap highlighting the failure of drafting Cunningham over him. Looking back at their rookie seasons in 2010 however, Cunningham did not have as many sacks as the 9.5 Dunlap had but he just as or more productive in every other phase.

Cunningham – 37 tackles, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, 1 pass defense, 5 run stuffs
Dunlap – 24 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 0 forced fumbles, 3 pass defenses, 1 run stuff

In season 2 Cunningham barely played, Dunlap continued to see a high number or reps. This leads me to question was Cunningham actually a worse pick than Dunlap or did the Patriots development plan and desire for instant gratification result in failure. Now I ask that question about Dobson, is Keenan Allen really a better wide receiver than Dobson or have the Patriots just failed developing him and his lack of opportunity is the cause of the disparity.

There is no report of him having surgery late in the offseason, which is speculation on your part. If he had surgery late in the offseason, he would not have been active in OTA, which he was. OTAs were in May that was 4 months ago; do you really think it is a factor? The issue is that Amendola needs more than 2.15 seconds to get open and by that time Brady is on the ground.

Without looking up stats, I actually think Ocho may have been more productive than Amendola, as amazing as that is. He also sucked for us for a helluva' lot less money.

Amendola is basically being paid millions of dollars to attend Patriot games. We should put a tricorne on his head and make him start Patriot chants in the crowd.

Minuteman Danny?

Give me a P... A... T... S - Pats Pats Pats

now we know there is hope once he is fully recovered that he can get back to being the average WR he once was

What about over 100 catches in 2013. They still were not convinced. This teams record getting good wide receivers is awful.

They still almost let Edelman go. Imagine that some other team signed him when we have asked him to test his market value...

What's with all this talk about somehow letting Danny Woodhead go or purposely not signing him? Danny made it perfectly clear that he was leaving to go to a team where he had a chance to be the featured back not just a member of the Patriots running-back-by-committee. He said as much when he signed with the Chargers. He was not signing here no matter what we offered.

Blount isn't much different. He left as a free agent. You cannot stop someone from leaving as a free agent. If a player wants to leave, they leave. Their former team can't do a thing about it. We could have offered him 50% of our salary cap and he could turn it down. There is nothing forcing him to stay.

Danny tore my chola needs to ball harder. Flat out. If he cannot then take a seat.

It is the same old macho BS they pull on all injured players, forcing them to tough it out even when injured so that lingering injuries never heal.
