Tommy Kelly scorches Patriots

Gee the run defense looked great last night! Why would the Patriots want him?

Another cheapskate move by the Patriots comes back to bite them...

You know this type of screed is coming today.....

Maz..."Its all about winning the deal for these guys. More ponies when what the team really needs is horses............Ponies Mike............Ponies. They love their Ponies"

And yet the news cycle is about how the Patriots are cheap and didn't want to pay Kelly. Go figure.

He must have felt snubbed. It's called cutting off your nose to spite your face. With Siliga out, let's go for the max playing time possibility, if i have this right.

Including the 100K we paid him to redo the contract I get 2,500,000 he could have received from us as opposed to the flat 955,000 he's getting.

Sounds like this was about money? Remember, he asked to leave.

Wilfork on the team is a joke too.

That depends on whether or not Kelly remains a contributor for the Cardinals or breaks down as the season wears on.

Actually not. Had he started the season, he couldn't make less than the Cardinals paid him and would likely have made a lot more by just being active for some games (maybe just being on the roster, I'm not sure).

I understand. It is just that to fit the media narrative the entire thing is framed as if it is about money.

There are so many advantages for Kelly not to be in on every snap (e.g. less injury risk, more time to recover..). Similarly, it is good for the team if our depth players get some experience, even if they suck. Just last season both our starters went down with injuries, one would think that it makes sense to keep the depth players involved is a good idea.

But no, it is poor Kelly being cut (upon request) because the Patriots are so cheap.

I know right? They will probably talk crap about signing Amendola instead of signing Welker and trading Mankins for Tim Wright too.

They can spin it as anything, but when the numbers are so dramatically against them, why listed to them? We were short stout experienced linemen and with one injury (Siliga), Kelly could be racking up incentives now.

I'm glad he's happy making less than half what he likely would have here. He shouldn't go into negotiating, is all I'm saying.

I hope some reporter has the balls to bring that up with him. He's looking pretty stupid here if he thinks he made a wise money decision.

More fun for reporters to flame with the "cheap" angle. Opportunities have been few over the years, so you jump on what you can and ride it until the next opportunity presents itself. That my friends is" ESPN Reporting 101".....a money maker every time

I agree.

Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the narrative that the Patriots are a cold blooded enterprise that see their players as resources in a cost/benefit analysis. While this is sometimes true, in many cases it is not but why ruin a perfectly good linkbait article. So I would not expect anyone to bring this up.

Here are Tommy Kelly's quotes.

"means I’m doing a good job but I have to keep getting better,” Kelly said. “What John did, he learned the playbook and then his talent came out because he wasn’t thinking no more. That’s why you have to learn the playbook and get to the point where I can just go. Let the talent come out."

"I saw the situation and I realized I probably wouldn’t be there,” “I couldn’t take busting my tail every day getting to a game and them taking me out of the game for someone who I know isn’t better than me, because he’s a cheaper option. Are we worried about money here? Or are we worried about winning"

I knew if I got the opportunity to play, I could still play in this league at a high level,”

The “straight-up” way the coaches have dealt with him has been beneficial, in contrast to how he said the last days of his New England tenure played out.

“You can’t ask for no more from your coaches,” Kelly said. “Just keep it ‘100’ for me. … I’m going to be a coach, and that’s exactly how I’m going to treat my players.”

To me, Kelly asked for his release not because of money but because he thought that he was a better DL option than some others and because he was not happy with how he was being treated.

I stand corrected on Tommy Kelly as well. I am forced to agree with him on this one.

So, include the signing bonus and 50k per game roster bonuses, and we pay him 900,000 more than Arizona without any of the 645,000 playing time incentives.

He must be an idiot to think he didn't lose a ton of money here.

And everyone except a few beat writers and some Pats fans will commend him for doing what he did to the "cheap" Patriots.

Preseason Week 1 vs Redskins, starts alongside Wilfork and plays 17 snaps of 73 (Wilfork plays 10)
Preseason Week 2 vs Eagles, starts alongside Wilfork and plays 15 snaps of 62 (Wilfork plays 18)
Preseason Week 3 vs Panthers, starts alongside Wilfork and plays 16 snaps of 52 (Wilfork plays 22)

33 years old, coming back from an ACL injury sees about as much playing time as you would expect a 33 year old coming back from an ACL injury.

He jumped to a conclusion that will end up making half of what he would have made here. Yet everyone except for a few people that really look at it will praise him for not being screwed over by those cheap bastard Patriots.

I found it amusing last night on Sportscenter right after the game with Steve Levy, Ray Lewis, Steve Young and Trent Dilfer. Levy says immediately, "the story should be how the KC Chiefs played tonight but we need to talk about NE and what's happening there." NE deserves heat for what happened last night, sure, but your point is spot on. Talking about NE's demise is much more inflammatory than how well KC did.

44.5 states have been waiting 13 years for a chink in the NE armor to finally emerge.......The collective nation minus 5.5 states is ready to dance on this grave.....Live on Sports Center.
Think Yankees. I found myself taking much more pleasure in Yankee collapses than Red Saux triumphs.......You know Jets fans will deflect their teams issues and bask in this NE demise. Hope BB denies all of them this perverse pleasure. Gonna get creepy

Absolutely. Everyone hates a winner unless it's your winner. I am looking forward to seeing NE rub **** in the faces of the NFL in the coming months (hopefully!).

It is definitely true and it is the reason they are in the pickle there find themselves in. The Patriots obsess about saving every dime. It seems to be their chief off-season activity; re-negotiations and chiseling and dumping pricey guy and hiring cheap guys. Instead of focusing on making the team better, they focus on saving money and all these efforts finally bore fruit this season.

Kelly = right

Bill = wrong, again.

Nope.

The guy jumped to conclusions based on playing time in the preseason coming back from an ACL injury and then cut his nose off to spite his face and will make half of what he probably would have if he stayed with NE.

And this talk about not playing as much. He's played 65% of the snaps with Arizona which is probably what he would have been around with NE right now.

I am sorry but either you just want to have nice soundbites or you seriously don't understand how BB builds his rosters.

The Patriots don't obsess about saving money. They obsess about using money strategically so they don't find themselves in cap hell like many other teams cyclically do. Do we want to pay two OL and DL players who are on the wrong side of 30 for a year of more contribution or do we reallocate that money to so we can sign our elite safety and elite corner and maybe still have some change left to plug depth holes.

This is making the team better in the long term. I don't care about what happened against KC, but just by looking at the players we have on our defense you can't seriously say that we are worse than in any of the last 5 years. Now currently, the sum of all its parts is definitely not greater but that is a different discussion (i.e. coaching).

If the NFL would have no roster limit and no salary cap, we would operate differently. But it is what it is.

What makes the Kelly case even more egregious is that he a) will earn less money with Arizona and b) he took rotation of the DL players personal. Which both is just plainly stupid and has nothing to do with the original argument that he was cut because the Patriots are cheap or not interested in having a good team.

The Patriots have 10-15 million in cap space and have serious problems at DL and especially at WR, partially because of their economizing. The Patriots are cheap; everyone in the league knows it . Brady knows it; I am sure this contributes to his poor attitude and grousing.

Brady has no one to stretch the field because that Patriots cheaped out in the offseason. They could have had Sanders or Smith (and Welker last year), but they were too obsessed with saving money. So now they have 10-15 mil and no one to spend it on.
