a defensive coordinator in the NFL, but then again, nobody else here is either. I'm just a random internet guy like everyone else.

That said, defensively, it seems like they have the personnel that is ideal for a particular style of play. They have DBs that are good at press coverage (Revis, Dennard, and Browner - two of whom have been missing the past few weeks), and an excellent free-ranging safety (McCourty). I think their defense should be an attacking style, not a reactive style. They should feature a high number of creative blitzes, utilizing the athleticism of Hightower, Jones, Easley, and Collins.

In years past, when they didn't have the press talent in the secondary, blitzing was problematic because they played soft and the hot receiver always had a cushion, so it wasn't that difficult to beat New England's blitz. But now, they should be able to press cover for a couple of seconds, which should be enough time to let the blitz disrupt things.

I would really like to see this defense become an attacking, set-the-tone kind of defense. Yes, they may give up some big plays in the process, but I think they'll generate a lot of turnovers and wreak all kinds of havoc.

whey need is ot to play zone when you have solid press corners

They need to use the players they paid correctly, get rid of space cadet Patricia, and they need an offense that can give them a f**k**% breather. That offense is a joke and Edelman is no exception. The line played better for stretches last night and no one got open against a stiffer defense, imagine if we make a (gasp) playoff run and face tougher comp.

They need a pass rush first and foremost, it would be nice if they could also find a way to stop an opposing tight end

It may be no more complicated than that.

Excited to see browner but I hope he isn't too rusty

On one play, Hightower, not Revis.....was covering Bowe..the one WR that was abusing the defense.
Who designs this garbage?
And tackling....take the defense into the indoor facility and practice tackling....EFF the practice rules. Pay the fines if you get caught.......but practice tackling.

The main answer to this question is:

DEPTH

Chandler Jones was abused last night. So was Chung. Nobody could cover a TE and nobody could tackle. It was ugly from the starters on down. The game plan needs to be much better than what it was last night. That was comical. The Chiefs ran where and when they wanted and passed when and where they wanted without so much as a speed bump to slow them down.

Someone explain why the Pats stuck with the same the defensive scheme the whole freaking game? They are getting shredded by Smith and where were the blitzes, where were some zone blitzes, where were repeated opportunities for Jones, Hightower, and Collins to all rush at the same time? There was zero creativity, and little or no response to what KC was doing. BB and Co. have seen this offense plenty of times, it was standard fare for a Reid team yet BB didn't seem to have the team prepared to see all the misdirection and motion.

An offense that doesn't go 3 and out to start the game and drain all the confidence right out of the team would make a huge difference.

They just need to get better. Period. Coaches need to put them in a position to win. The players are there and I think it will get better as the season goes on. Hopefully Browner and Dennard can give us the play-depth they need. Honestly though, for the first time I am starting to question the coaching staff on this team. From Belichick to McDaniels, Patricia etc.

Need to weather the storm and turn this around. Not sure if they can but it's been done before. Patriots do it all the time. As well as the Giants squeezing into the playoffs and making noise.

Can anyone tell me what the coaching philosophy is here on offense or defense? There just seems to be no direction or theme for these crews.

We need simplicity. I think the defense got ahead of itself and thought it could be fancy pants. It's time to go back to the fundamentals and just out execute.
