BELICHICK IS TO BLAME.

Personnel choices mattered there. Amendola instead of KT and Dobson was a bad idea with that group. FTR, I"m not saying that Amendola should have been benched (different question), but I'm saying that at least one of the KT/Dobson duo should have been active ahead of Amendola against that particular team.
I suppose it might have been better to have one of them active. I doubt very much that they would have been used deep more than were Edelman and LaFell.

Suiting up 3 receivers seems insane to me. Is Dobson really that bad where he can't even suit up? We had Brandon Bolden, and James White suited up and there was what 3 or 4 meaningful snaps between them? I think the personell choices combined with the fact that we don't seem to have a lot of starting NFL players on our offense are going to equal a long year.

It is not all bad...

Think of the money the Patriots have saved!

Some teams like the Broncos and Seahawks spend the offseason obsessing about improving their team, while the Patriots obsess about saving money. They are always looking for a cheaper player (or coach) or trying to re-structure a player down or get rid of the expensive players.

BELICHICK IS TO BLAME.

I just said Josh should be fired tonight.

Someone replied it won't happen because he's "Belichick's guy."

I said all the more reason to sh#tcan him, so Belichick can see how it feels for a change.

It's time to redirect this conversation where it belongs. Through out this entire nightmare, the Rutger JAG's, the Welker breakdown in relations, not resigning Blount, questionable drafting, putting the GOAT behind a peewee offensive line, fielding Amendola over Thompkins in Arrowhead, and TRADING MANKINS right before the season starts, I have one question:

How the hell has Lord Belichick escaped this conversation while the whole world dumps on the guy who has been covering up his BS for the last 6 seasons?

Josh should be gone tomorrow. He sucked as soon as he got here, running his gimmicky BS meant for trash teams like Tebow's Broncos while having some of the best offensive players in football, and it's been a DRASTIC decline from that day on.

No matter how good your offensive coordinator is, he cannot succeed without good players. The Patriots do not have many weapons on offense.

  • Ridley is a weapon being used incorrectly,
  • Vereen is a weapon being used incorrectly,
  • Gronkowski is a weapon coming back from major injury,
  • Edelman most certainly is a weapon and is coming off a 100 catch season,
  • Wright had an impressive rookie season. He is a potential weapon not being used at all, &
  • Dobson is a potential weapon not being used at all.
The players are there. The personnel groupings are not. That is on the coaches.

Ridley's been crap, which is why he's not being used. It's not about correctly with him. It's about 3.4 ypc and poor overall play without any explosive upside
Vereen is being used fine. He's just not getting it done.
Gronk is a broken weapon, so pointing to him makes no sense.
Wright is being wildly overrated by a board that basically had never heard of him prior to the trade.
Dobson is coming off of a foot injury.

In short, you're really only listing one working weapon, Edelman, which is the point. The notion that this offense is loaded with healthy talent that's being held back is just not accurate.

The players are not there.

Ridley - decent back, nothing special.
Vereen - decent back, nothing special.
Gronkowski - elite, not healthy.
Edelman - good slot WR, out of position.
Wright - proved nothing, slow undrafted WR playing out of position.
Dobson - please.

The talent is not there.

Also, can someone explain why we let Spikes walk and pay Mayo $7 million/yr? is it me or did Spikes seem to be more impactful than Mayo. Neither can cover.

7-9.

I was going to include Spikes in my OP but I figured I'd be crucified for it so I thought I'd let that one go.

The problem I see with your opinion @iapatsfan is your appraisal of the players. You are basing your appraisal on their current use not how they should be used. The players simply aren't being putting into a position to succeed.

Also, Spikes is slow as molasses. If you want to get faster, you don't play Brandon Spikes. Right now, the Patriots are failing schematically and the players aren't identifying correct gap assignment. As much as I enjoy the play of Chandler Jones, his efforts to set the edge against KC were abysmal. To me, he looked sack hungry and the Chiefs exploited that with their edge rushing.

If neither guy can cover, why pay the inferior run player $7 million / yr and let the superior run player walk for much less?

I basing my appraisal of players on their abilities to win one on one match ups. Our guys lose more than they win, especially Chandler Jones. Shane Vereen is supposed to be great in the open field. Did you see his inability to beat a single defender on the blown coverage play down the right sideline? Ridley's avg at best. I can go on and on.

As for Spikes, he is slow as molasses, but he was more impactful in games than Jerod "tackle after 5 yard gain" Mayo. Neither guy can cover anybody. I'll take the cheaper and more impactful of the two evils.

This team has 7-9 talent.

You're right in that you can go on and on. That doesn't make you right.

Things are never as good or as bad as they appear. The Patriots have many correctable issues. If talent is the issue, let's ship Ridley off to Minnesota for Matt Asiata. He's a fantasy football stud this season.

Suiting up 3 receivers seemed okay IF they were going to be focused on running the ball and playing some semblance of an effective defensive unit.

Much like last week vs a team with a very bad run defense, they shocked us all by coming out of the gate and deciding to throw 3 straight times for a three and out...

I really wish we had some guys that brought a physical presence and attitude to this team. Haven't had much of it since the SB years and after the departure of Spikes and Mankins we have absolutely 0 on both sides of the ball. No one to bring an edge to the team that can rub off on the other guys. We literally just have a bunch of individuals each trying to do his job hoping he doesn't f*** it up. No attitude, no killer-instinct, no desire. To me, this is the worst part as there's really no way to fix it. Brady has obviously always been a leader but there's only so much the man can do and he seems to be losing the fire. Gotta be hard not to in the huddle glaring at sheer mediocrity on all sides.

Please tell me how you correct having little talent and Matt "under qualified is an understatement" Patricia as your DC.

There's a reason why Mayo was a top 10 overall draft pick.

I'm not saying that I don't miss the physicality that Spikes brought, but I think you're overrating his skills a bit by comparing him to Jerod Mayo.

I would hire Rex Ryan in a second as our defensive coordinator.

I have seen more than enough of Matt Patricia.

I think this move would be great. He really isn't a bad coach. I feel like our current defense is more talented than the one he had the two years they went to the AFCCG

I don't believe there is a talent issue and you fire Patricia, McDaniels and bring in some fresh, new ideas at the end of the season.

Spikes wasn't perfect, but when we needed the ball, Spikes got it for us.
