Bill Simmons goes after Goodell, in a big way

interesting that he got suspended for this.

if you are not able to hold those in power accountable via good journalisim, then you are no longer a news outlet, you are ventriloquist dummy

ESPN Statement on Bill Simmons

“Every employee must be accountable to ESPN and those engaged in our editorial operations must also operate within ESPN’s journalistic standards. We have worked hard to ensure that our recent NFL coverage has met that criteria. Bill Simmons did not meet those obligations in a recent podcast, and as a result we have suspended him for three weeks.”

The 99% opinion/1% "sports" network has journalistic standards???
These "standards" had to be written after...."the Patriots hate their coach" episode.
My hate for ESPN has never been stronger. Charles Barkley on TNT is revered for his inflammatory style. Ray Lewis tells us certain cover ups are ok......But Simmons dares to speak the very thoughts on everyone's minds after watching Rodger the Dodger lie his way through a presser........and he gets sent to the curb
So lets review.
Beat your girl on camera....14 days
Call the Commish a liar.....21 days
Lie to the American public.....no consequence + $44 million.
I thought only Russia operated this way

They had to suspend him. He drew a line and dared them. Now we find out if he thought he needed a vacation, or he actually meant his threat.

Exactly. Any employee who tells every other employee, all the customers and suppliers, and the general public, that he can say and do whatever he wants at work and dares his employer to do anything about it is begging to be fired.

Simmons is just doing the same thing the other media personalities do - creating false controversy and drama in order to get attention, which leads to clicks, which leads to a bigger paycheck.

He'll get just as much attention during these three weeks, blogging and tweeting from another platform, than he would otherwise.

Yeah, I'm not sure what his other motivation could have been. He's already laid into Goodell numerous times. He had already made his point. It seemed to me like he wanted to get suspended in a Howard Stern type of way.
The Disney corporations provide him with all kinds of outlets, such as the NBA draft, 30 for 30 series, etc that he can't get elsewhere. If he doesn't ever want to answer to somebody he shouldn't have agreed to the Grantland site when his contract was up.
And I'm one of the bigger Simmons' fans out there. Just think he got it wrong on this one. Went too far.

The part that gets me mad is they then go out and suspend him for 3 weeks. It's his podcast that he said it on Espn should have nothing to do with that. It gets me mad he can't say what he wants because it's what everyone els is thinking.

Wait a second....ESPN never disciplined Greggggg Easterbrooke's LIBELS (even had an ombudsperson write that he was in the wrong with his claims) but suspend Simmons??????

I feel like this could possibly be a publicity stunt to make Simmons again be the 'Fans' voice after he turned corporate and moved to LA.

If not then this is a dumb move by ESPN.

Ray Rice gets suspended 2 weeks for knocking out his fiancee.

Simmons gets suspended 3 weeks for criticizing the Commissioner's handling of Ray Rice incident.

Yup. Business as usual.

I knew all I needed to know when I read these few words from the Empire State Programming Network's statement: "...ESPN's journalistic standards." Supreme hypocrisy.

Punch your wife in the face knocking her out ... 2 weeks suspension

Use words to criticize the NFL establishment ... 3 weeks

You would think someone with some sort of brain would point this out to anyone in authority over there. These people are collective morons.

Let's just end this charade....ESPN, NBC, PFT, CBS, FOX, NFL Networks, etc.......need to remove the job title "journalist" or "reporter" or "analyst" from all employees. Time to call it for what it is.....PARTNERS.

"And lets head down to the sideline and speak with NFL Partner Suzy Kolbert who will promote the NFL's 50 year anniversary of reducing head trauma"

"And right after this commercial NFL Partner Mark Schlereth will give his NFL approved analysis fully supported by the Commissioners Office. Stay tuned"

"NFL Partner and Fantasy expert John Clayton, live from the Commissioner's Permanent Suite at Jets Stadium, has the exclusive inside scoop for premium subscribers only on Today's arrests in the NFL and how this will impact your fantasy roster this weekend. Set up a PayPal account today and get 3 years of ESPN the Magazine free"

My guess is he was told to ease off a bit, and that ticked him off into make that statement. Simmon's history is he doesn't like it when ESPN filters his message
