OL needs LOTS of improvement. Should have had a field day running against supposed worst rush D. And when Raiders rushed only 4, Brady was getting no time and rushed on too many throws on non-blitz plays.
Can anybody besides Edelman step up up their game? I dont think he can last the whole season with that many plays/hits.
Can't wait until Gronk isnt limited in his snaps anymore. Also Dobson needs to get physcially right soon.
Defense bend but don't break limited the Raiders to FGs. Got bailed out from some Raiders receivers drops, and QB pressure was inconsistent but hard to argue with 9 points total given up.

I thought that 4th down-- throwing mid out of bounds -- was pretty risky as it appeared to me in realtime that there was a second still left on the clock when the ball when out of bounds, and could've lead to a disastrous last chance for Oakland

So given the scenario -- about 8 seconds extra than what kneel down provides

I'm okay with them doing the delayed kneel instead of running the ball as there's a reduced chance of fumble.

But on that last play, with 3 seconds, instead of what brady did, i'd rather have:
1. He have thrown it deeper down the middle (just pick a spot where no player was), thus the clock doesn't stop till the ball hits the ground
2. He could've gone ran back with the ball thru the endzone; safety, but chewing off the 3 seconds, but even if there was a second left we'd just squib it on the kickoff

As a minor point, there's no kickoff after a safety; it's a "free kick" (essentially a punt) where the opposing team, as with a punt (but not a kickoff), has an absolute right to the ball. [Strictly speaking, it is a penalty—"illegal touching"—if a member of a kicking team touches a punt before a member of the receiving team does. The only penalty is that the kicking team gets possession at the spot of the foul, so it doesn't count as an "actual" penalty in the stats.]

5) Revis is not as good as I thought he would be.

I keep telling myself a few things as it pertains to this subject:

--he's helping the overall scheme and in ways that we may not be able to see as easily as the one vs one matchups. He's doing his job on a lot of plays that we don't realize, which likely shifts the target and other aspects

--we haven't used him in the press man coverage as much as we'd like, at least as much as I can tell in the first 3 games. Obviously this does not utilize his strengths as much

--Revis has been known to have some off games at times. Just look it up during his time with the Jets and Bucs

--no matter what, I'd still rather have him over Talib due to the health factor, attitude, and toughness alone

Here's a thought. Watching the defense the last two weeks, and especially today, I wondered when was the last time the defense held a team under ten points and the Pats won by a TD or less....essentially winning the close defensive battles. It has happened three times in the Belichick era
2001 12-9 vs Buf
2003 9-3 vs Clev
2004 13-7 vs NYJ

You also have to consider that, with the new rules, there is no such thing anymore as 100% shutdown corner who never gets beat.

The defense is playing well and the special teams are improving. The offense remains out of sync and that starts with the o-line. Solder needs to play better and Devey needs to be replaced--Connolly should move over to guard and Stork should move into the center slot. That should solidify things a bit, then hopefully just playing together will help the line to gel. They have to give Brady more time to throw and open up some holes for Ridley and Vereen who are running hard. Wright, Thompkins and Amendola each flashed for a play or two, so maybe they'll be able to build on that and LaFell quietly caught 4 balls. I'm sure they'll improve, but they need to get it going before the schedule gets tougher.

McDaniels calling the 2nd to last timeout at 1:06 left in the 1st half. Patriots had 2nd and 6 at the Oakland 13 yard line.

B-O-N-E-H-E-A-D.

There was no need for that and it cost the team 4 points, almost 7.

For a moment I thought that maybe I was wearing blue glasses and watching a tape of a Rex Ryan Jets game. That was putrid.

While you have a valid point about the rules, a rookie QB isn't supposed to beat you 5/6 times, with a pass interference penalty thrown in to boot; at least not for that kind of money or talent, anyway.

No matter, since they won--which is all that's important.

I do question what game some posters were watching when they see a rookie QB on the road in his 3rd game, throwing strikes in 5/6 opportunities against our supposed "shutdown" CB (along with a DPI penalty) and then walk away thinking "that was a solid effort, he looked very good...." LOL

Revis didn't even have an incomplete attempt until the final drive of the game, and that's out of 7 attempt including his DPI penalty vs a rookie QB. I don't think we're necessarily seeing "bad" performances. I think mediocre is much more indicative.

Ok, and in 2011 those bad QBs would have put up 20+ points. This team hasn't given up a TD in 7 quarters. That's great, I don't care who they're playing.

And in the end, that's really all that matters.

The defense is getting the job done. We all likely believe that BOTH sides of the ball will improve as the season progresses.

It wasn't pretty, but it was a good game for the D mostly and the O showed spurts of being able to do what they want. It's September, and luckily we played the Raiders. We have some good things to build on and learn from.

But God help us if Julian Edelman gets hurt. *knock on wood*

I suppose you sort of have to give him credit for not giving up any big scoring plays like Talib and Sherman did today.

Completely disagree.

Both KT and Dobson have looked good when they play, and both have caught basically everything they've had a chance to catch. They're also open a lot, so i'd say their lack of production is more about protection and time for Brady to get to his 3rd progression and less about how well they are playing.

Revis has looked great so far, what are you talking about? He has been on point for basically every completion against him, its just the receiver made incredible plays off perfect passes.... It happens. I'll take those catches any day of the week.

Brady looked about as good as a QB can play under such duress. So unless you think he is going to morph into R Wilson tommorow, I don't know what you can expect.

The OL protection has been horrible, but he badly missed some easy throws the past few weeks. The one where he had Gronk all by himself about 7 yards away was hideous today. Also the endzone pass to Amendola was his fault. He's lucky he did not have 2 INTs today.

He has every right to be shaken by the horrible OL protection. That does not mean we have to close our eyes to the fact that, at this moment in the season, he appears out of sync.

The 2001 Bills game was the game that jump started the Pats dynasty. It was one of the hardest hitting games that I can remember.

That was the game where David Patton decided to take on a defender after a pass down the sideline instead of stepping out of bounds, took a gigantic hit and was knocked unconscious. When the ball slipped from his hands it grazed his leg as he was lying half in and half out of bounds, so the play was ruled dead instead of a game ending fumble for the Bills.

I remember the 2003 9-3 Browns game because I was there. Ugh.

Absolutely.

Like I said, his presence alone is likely contributing in ways that we likely cannot see.

It's certainly not meant to be overly critical of what is probably my favorite player, but his reputation and talent alone was thought here to be good enough to where other teams wouldn't even be testing him too often. That was nothing more than a pipedream, although I think we expect him to improve in his one vs. one matchups throughout the season.

bizarre that there are any complaints about one of the best defenses in the league'

They gave up 33 points to the Dolphins.

Then held down the "vaunted" Vikings and Raiders (something that WOULD have been impressive in the 1970's).

Tannehill, Cassel and Carr?????

They're going to have to be ready for Rivers, Manning, Luck and Rodgers later this year.
