Roger Goodell Press Conference

You need to be clear on what you're trying to talk about. By claiming "the media would not be pursuing this story a fraction as vigorously" if it was another sports league, you appear to imply (the media) has an inordinately zealous agenda against the NFL because it's football. If, instead, you're saying the media devoted more resources because the NFL is tops in fan popularity and income, perhaps so.
The media would not be pursuing it as vigorously nor would it be as widely reported if it were a lesser sport.
But again, the media did not create what happened re., Rice, Hardy, Peterson, etc. The facts are there to be had and reported and would've been reported just the same if the players played baseball, hockey, basketball or croquet. The "scandal" is not "bigger" because it's the NFL. The facts would be the same regardless of sport.
scandal - an action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing general public outrage.

If the facts were the same but it was another sport, there would not be as much public outrage or media attention.

jeezus...that's so laughably absurd it defies understanding. The Twitterverse says "hello moron!!" along with Pete Rose from 30 years ago.

The media would not be pursuing it as vigorously
How are you defining "vigorously"? Not much "vigor" has been required on the media's behalf to report what's been happening. Once again, as you appear slow on the uptake: the FACTS are the FACTS, and have not been created by the media.

nor would it be as widely reported if it were a lesser sport.
Perhaps in terms of non-sports media, but similar events in any other pro sports league still would be reported, further investigated, analyzed and dissected on a national level.

IF you are speaking solely in terms of the NFL's popularity and influence, this might be true to some degree. But given the same exact set of events in the NBA or MLB in particular, I doubt you'd see much difference. It still would be reported on the nightly network news.

Hmm So anyway, Browner will be back soon............

What part of "all else being equal" do you not understand?

Well, duh. Good job finally stumbling onto the point I'm making.

Highly reported? Sure. All 3 networks interrupting regularly scheduled programming to broadcast the commissioner's press conference live? No way.

what part of "this will all blow over in 24 hours" do YOU not understand...I mean, it's only been almost 4 weeks now, nonstop...maybe you live in a parallel universe where 24 hours = month.

what part of "this will all blow over in 24 hours" do YOU not understand...
Where did anyone say that? Specific post please.

Once you finally stumbled onto what you were trying to say, your point (not to be confused with the one atop your head) wrested itself from your murky prose. Duh.

Don't you dare spring that on commissioners of the NBA or MLB, who no doubt value your vapid conjecture as God's honest truth.

People, don't fool yourselves: Ray Rice's career is not over. Time will pass, the furor will die down, and someone else will do something else to get everyone all riled up. This will become yesterday's news, and some team will sign him and it won't be that big of a deal.

yesterday's news...as in YESTERDAY? Yesterday 4 weeks ago when you first started spinning?...oh wait...yesterday a month from now...THAT must be it...Ray Rice should hire YOU for a press agent.

Not to mention the entire Black Sox team.

this is a genuine ,full blown, American scandal....every person in this country with more than 39 brain cells can see this is so. When America has a scandal it always ends badly for the center of the scandal, be it Nixon, Ivan Boesky, Bernie Madoff...on and on and on. Today's shallow, preplanned newsdump by Goodell is laughably transparent. The heat only goes up from here.

Roger the dodger

I remember the Donald Sterling story getting a lot of coverage. It didn't have the staying power of the Rice story, but the NBA commissioner didn't bungle that situation.

The Sterling saga went on and on and then...Sterling went *poof*....kicking and screaming and suing...but still *poof*. He held press conferences wherein he made it quite clear he would NOT sell, step down or remove himself from the Clipper organization. Goodell's press conference today was a doppelganger.

Everyone is wondering if their commisioner is a kook.

Well, I'm not a kook.

I actually feel kind of bad for the guy and I am sick of the public outcry. I honestly feel this TMZ story is so overblown and Goodell is facing so much heat for something Rice did. So what that he only suspended him 2 games. He was still suspended and every game is important in a 16 game season. I wonder how the public would react if one of Jason Kidd's domestic abuses were to surface out of the blue. He has played in the olympics and many great teams but is someone like him that much better than Ray.

And I wish the NFL would grow some balls. If its two games stick with it and ride out the noise. If Peterson isn't going to play, don't flip-flop on the matter.

Lastly, it is silly to think that he would resign. He has the support of the owners and would anyone in their right mind quit a job that paid them 44mil last year?

Thank you, my view exactly. I'm not a Goodell rooter, and think he blundered with Spygate badly. But the media in general, and sports commentators in particular, are just out of control and have totally manufactured a witch hunt here. Totally sick of their sanctimonious bs. They're only interested in filling their show with a controversy no matter how lame.

Eh, they smell blood in the water so they do what sharks do. It's part and parcel of being in such a visible, influential position. Goodell knew this when he signed on.

I'm enjoying it because of who is on the hot seat. He did this to himself with his "New Sheriff in Town" bs. Anyone could have seen something like this coming.

The media did not create the transgressions of Rice, Hardy and Peterson, nor did it mishandle them in the context of those players' NFL employment. This is far from a witch hunt -- it's the media shedding light on Goodell's bumbling and lies in his attempts to cover for the owners' $$$-driven situational ethics.
