Robert Kraft defends Roger Goodell: "The way he has handled this situation is excellent"

He met with the media a couple weeks ago.
He admitted they messed up the Rice suspension.
He implemented new, stricter punishments systems.

The rest is just haters gonna hate.

I'm still waiting for those sources. I'm interested in what quote you believe is his apology. And yes, I expect an actual link.

"I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values. I didn't get it right. Simply put, we have to do better. And we will." - Goodell letter, which goes on to describe steps the league is taking to remedy the problem.

Like I said, so many of the people saying "the NFL should do this" don't realize they've already done the things they say they should do. But haters gonna hate I spose.

I think you're very naive. Saying "I take responsibility" and actually doing so are 2 entirely different things. Any idiot can get up on TV and act contrite about past failures.

Talk is cheap. Goodell hasn't taken responsibility for any specific errors in the handling of these cases, he hasn't set a firm line for teams to follow, and the "due process" argument made a mockery of the new conduct policy until public opinion forced teams to react.

When the league's actions show that they take this behavior seriously, people will stop calling them out.

I believe this comes from the letter to the owners which is NOT addressed in any way to the public.

I'm still waiting for a link from you. But I can give you mine.

Text of the internal NFL memo:

Goodell to hold a press conference in NY at 3 PM:

I hope he'll address some of this openly.
Is it just me or has this issue been a bit overblown? He is literally getting more live media coverage than primetime presidential addresses. All 3 networks and the cable news networks are all giving live coverage. Unlike Obama, Goodell is also being carried live on ESPN and miscellaneous sports networks (CBSSN, FSN, etc).

Agree. Also, as much as I dislike Goodell for Crygate, some of these press conference questions are ridiculous. "I saw a Mom with two kids wearing Peterson jerseys this weekend, and they were confused and conflicted about what to think. What would you say to that Mother?"

Why the #&^@ should Roger Goodell be saying anything to her? Since when is it the NFL Commissioner's place to regulate societal morals?

That said, Goodell's answers are just political-speak and damage control. This is just a giant waste of time. I feel like I'm watching a politician. You absolutely nailed it a few days ago when you said this would result in the Tom Brady's of the league having to sit through domestic violence seminars.

Goodel'ls "transparency" ended real quick in the press conference. He's condescending to reporters, he stands there smiling like a smug prick pointing to "what I said before", when what he said before was basically non answers.

Some reporters are trying to press him. But he just tries to slip away from all tough questions.

Honestly, reporters are deserving of condescension. This isn't a meaningful event for either Goodell or the reporters. For one it's damage control and appeasement for people's alleged "outrage" and for the reporters it's looking for troll bait.

No, he hasn't. Not even close.

Saying "we've made mistakes" as a generic statement while waffling or prevaricating on every specific isn't enough. Making statements that are contradicted by other authorities within 24 hours of making them isn't enough. "Committing" to fixing things and then standing by while new infractions are reported every week isn't enough. Enacting a new policy and then having inconsistent enforcement of it isn't enough. Letting teams decide invidivually whether players need treatment - or even worse, say that it is up to the player - isn't enough. Letting things get to the point where your corporate sponsors have to come out and publicly berate your response isn't enough. And all of the "negative PR" is continuing to come out because it is obvious to the vast majority of people that these things aren't nearly enough.

NOW he's actually made a good start, albeit a little late:

“I got it wrong in the handling of the Ray Ricematter and I’m sorry for that. I got it wrong on a number of levels, from the process that I led to the decision that I reached. But now I will get it right and do whatever is necessary to accomplish that,” Goodell said.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...t-wrong-im-sorry-and-now-i-will-get-it-right/

Now he has to take specific, sustained and consistent actions to back those words up.

What a joke his press conference was. He spent about two minutes saying how he got the Ray Rice decision wrong and then spent 30 minutes bragging how the NFL has changed the discussion of domestic violence in this country and how they are taking the lead on changing things in this country. Huh?!?

Oops. Didn't see the actual press conference, just read the report. That's different. Sounds like business as usual.

They played it on 98.5. It was two minutes of mea culpa (mostly what he has already said on the CBS interview) and then a bunch of generalities and patting himself on the back for all the changes that they have made in the last few days because they were shamed into it.

Talk a lot and say nothing.

The more I hear about `his` predictable solutions (hiring activists to discipline NFL players) the more this just seems like a disaster waiting to happen, and the more it makes me think the NFL should just bow out of policing players and simply let the police police players.
