Maybe it'll shut some people up. Probably not though.

Yes, you're right - we knew it was coming.

And here's the crux of Spygate. It only became a big issue because Goodell wanted to make believe to the ignorant football fan massess that unlike in baseball, signal stealing in football does not occur.

He didn't want the average football consumer to know that his own rules as Commissioner not only didn't prohibit filming of signals, it allowed it from certain locations, with sideline taping "for the use on that gameday" being deemed against the rules as of 2007

Of course Belichick is always one to find the loophole in a rule, and with no intention of using the tapes that day, continued with sideline taping, which as confirmed by numerous other head coaches, had been common

But in Goodell's zeal to take a self-righteous posture against signal stealing for the fans who apparently don't notice that even today, coordinators are covering their mouths when calling in plays, and make the average fan think he held a zero tolerance policy for this so-called "cheating" he created a monster that lives on today, where jealous fans are fond of singling out the Patriots for things their own teams are doing

Now Goodell's own cover up is his mess to clean up. I would have preferred to see those tapes all made public - along with the tapes confiscated from the Jets and any other team. But Goodell wanted to make it seem like this was a single occurrence and not common place.

Kraft went along with the ruse to uphold perceptions of "the integrity of the game" as that of course influences the NFL's profitability - but I have to think he and especially Belichkck and Brady regret that now

I'm really glad to see that video taping defensive signals is being discussed on a par with knocking a woman's jaw to the back of her head or pounding on a 4 year old's scrotum

just sent a AAA rated Joe Kerr rant to the moron and his moron contributor,Ryan M. Rodentberger, essentially pointing out the lies and inconsistencies of his column of vomit.Added the Mangini sign-in at 3:30 the Thursday before the game at NFL headquarters. He'll either respond with the standard "thanks for the feeback" bullshiite or ask for hard copy evidence...which I HAVE in my possession.

Sports Illustrated turning itself into a gutter mag looking for clicks... there you go.

Well, they basically killed off half their readership when they went to that terrible new format with their website. I haven't been back since. I guess I'm not missing much.

What gets me is this incompetent "writer" calls it "clandestine videotaping".

What was "clandestine" about it???

Matt Estrella was standing in full view of 70,000 Jets fans in the old Meadowlands, wearing a Patriots staff jersey with a large over the shoulder camera.

That is "clandestine"?

He obviously has an agenda, and he's not going to let truth get in his way.

I covered that in my e-mail to him, Shmess...of course I was a bit more caustic about it, calling into question how his eyesight was affected by the fact his head was stuck up his posterior.

Just another person to put on the biased and stupid list.

I have one thing to add to this, plus an additional observation:

As far as theorizing Goodell's mindset at that time, keep in mind that he spent offseason leading up to the 2007 season dropping the hammer on Adam 'Pacman' Jones, Chris Henry, and Tank Johnson. When the Patriots ran afoul of the rules after that, he didn't want to appear 'soft' on a coach/team after making an example of some players. This is one of the problems with Goodell's disciplinary decisions - They are based, in part, off of the mood at time, not necessarily established guidelines.

As for the decision to destroy the tapes, it's almost irrelevant. Say, hypothetically, that the tapes were collected and locked in a secure cabinet in league headquarters in NY. Then, people would claim that the league didn't get all the tapes and demand to see what was on them. If the league decided to air some of the tapes, they would claim those had been doctored somehow and the league is covering up something worse.

Look at what happened in the Saints bounty case. We kept hearing that NFL had gathered all this evidence, but some people didn't believe it. When the league released some of the documentation, people thought it was suspicious that they didn't release everything. In short, there will always be a tinfoil hat brigade who refuses to accept the official story.

Geez. I wonder why SI didn't run this picture of the guy who shot the video inside the elevator at the casino where Ray Rice punched his fiancee:

Oh hell, I'm giving myself a break and not even reading this garbage. What happened in the past is in the past. No comments are going to be able to convince anyone any differently.

I have yet to meet ONE person who has read or listened to the actual facts and came away with a different opinion. They bring it up because that is all they have to fall on.

They don't even try and report the facts, just personal bias that comes with writing the story (7 years later--LOL). Honestly...who the hell cares anymore? It's a shame that people don't know the truth, but no one is going to convince them, nor do they even want to know.

Here is the 'logic' being used;

Crygate - Team films coaches from the wrong place after the new Commish, a former employee of the offended team, changes the emphasis of the rule in 2007. The team goes on to lose in the SB that year but their SB wins before the change are tainted, and people are still crying about it 7 years later.

Bountygate - Team successfully uses a bounty system to try and hurt key players on opposing teams, resulting in injuries to opposing players and a SB win that season. No need to even mention the violation again and everyone can applaud the greatness of Drew Brees and the Saints.

Much of journalism has degenerated into reactionary pieces such as this, where facts take a back seat to sensationalism and appealing to a "watching a train wreck" crowd, so instead of developing a new and different POV they rely on a tried and true one, even if it is incorrect.

We witness this daily on the radio talk shows and in the print media... Borges, Felger and the rest of the crew revel in being contrarians rather than objective news reporters... success is measured in facebook and twitter followers...
