Vikings RB Adrian Peterson indicted for child abuse; deactivated for Pats game at Minnesota

glad this has all blown over in 24 hours....oh wait...uh...what ?????????????

I'll take "fantasy running backs not injured or facing abuse charges" for 200 Alex...

The Vikings have flip flopped on their flip flop and are putting the child abuser on the NFL exempt list.

I wonder if the talking heads will now be able to talk about the abuser again.

Peterson has been a bad boy and needs a whoopin. Let me go get my switch, a 33" Louisville Slugger with a thin handle. That should work.

No can do. Adrian Peterson has legal rights and protections.

However, evidently in the South, it is questionable whether a 4 year old child has those same legal rights.

No.

According to Shank, Time Magazine and PFT, the real problem is that Bob Kraft and Tom Brady have not commented on a player from another franchise from 1,200 miles away.

I think the reversal had to have something to do with this statement from Anheuser-Busch:

I'm so glad we have beer companies around to serve as our moral compass!

Adrian Foster nails it:

Selling poison from that high horse, domestic abuse an alcohol are synonymous

Although it is a case of biting the hand that feeds you.

Where is Goodell...where is he? Now is the perfect time to exercise authority and leadership. Get up off the canvas and right this ship. Decisions are gonna be made and the people that have their opinions are already going to not support you for whatever decision you do or do not make. If I were him I would get up, take the reins and show some leadership and continue to manage this league. The NFL needs some leadership right now. The owners (85-90%) only care about cash. Be a leader and lead this League through this difficult time, or simply step down and let someone else do it...

The league either has to be in the moral police game or out of it. Right now there aren't any rules in place to handle it and it seems to be done in a case by case ever changing way simply based upon the public uproar. You can't run a league like that.

You either let the justice system work and stay out of it. Or develop rules that state if a player is acused of X then he is out until he is either found guilty or innocent. A player getting a bigger penalty for doing the same thing another player did, because we can watch him do it on youtube doesn't make any sense.

Makes you appreciated how swiftly and decisively Kraft and Belichick moved on Hernandez. Not that they had any choice, but cutting him before he even reached the jail was the smart move.
I've heard multiple people kiss Kraft and Belichick asses for their actions last summer, but saying they moved "swiftly and decisively" is revisionist history.

It was a full week between the time the Hernandez investigation began and the moment the Patriots cut him. Hernandez was reported as being directly involved with a homicide 6 days before the Pats cut him, and even then they only cut him once it was obvious he'd pretty much be spending the rest of his life in jail.

So can we please stop acting like the Patriots found out Hernandez was involved with a homicide and cut him that same day?

"Reported" means nothing.

Peterson was arrested last Friday, was deactivated, then activated then deactivated early Tuesday morning.

Hernandez was arrested and the Patriots cut him before he hit the police station.

Weak.

Hernandez was going to be charged with murder. Since he wasn't really a flight risk, and since he was a very high profile rich guy, the authorities made sure they did every single thing by the book.

I know it's not popular to be anything but a total homer in this forum, but the Patriots were not as "decisive" and "immediate" as some would like to believe.

Chris Kluwe (former punter for the Vikings) weighs in from his verified NFL reddit account (Loate):
At the very least, deactivated until the legal stuff comes to a conclusion. He's already admitted to doing it.

(Also, AP was the last guy in the world I would expect to see doing something like this, he was always a great guy in the locker room, but reality is reality.)

I feel that he needs to understand what he did was wrong, but that he should definitely get a second chance ala Vick. It's much more powerful and beneficial to society for someone to become a legitimate agent of change (which is why I ultimately changed my stance on Priefer)

What you really mean is that you like a good lynching without the accused having his/her day in court. Sounds about normal these days.
I agree with you. I was stating the view of so many on the board and in the media. I didn't use the sarcasm thingy. Those reading this thread know that this rather absurd view is not my own. We are in the minority here on this board.

TEAM
When should the team suspend a player? Since he has not been proven guilty, a team should suspend with pay until there is a guilty plea.

The players sign an ambiguous morals clause. The players have accepted this. So, they can certainly be fired for being arrested, or for having violated the morals of the team.

I guess each team can have its own standards of when they will exact punishment in addition to those given by the police and court system. Obviously, we can turn the other way when a player uses drugs or is involved illegally with those who are. Each team can decide whether a player who has served a sentence should be cut. Of course, another team can sign such a player.

After the appeal, I suspect that Rice will be playing for someone in the NFL, this year or next.

THE NFL
The players do NOT work for the NFL. The NFL is NOT the police. The NFL is NOT judge and jury. The NFL has a narrow set of responsibilities having to with game itself, safety and specific item negotiated with the union. Drugs is the best example of this. Setting rules for concussions is another.

The CURRENT NFL policy for spousal abuse is 6 games for the first offense. Posters here would seem to want to change this to a lifetime ban. Offense is defined as anything the NFL wants it to mean. There is no requirement of action by the police. There are rules with regard to sentencing by both the league and the team.

In any case, this is very slippery slope. When someone is accused of a crime, what should happen? Should the NFL really exact punishment with no police action at alL, or because they didn't like the police action?

IMHO, the NFL is not going to be able to be court of law. Should it ban a child abuser for life if the courts give the player 90 days in jail. If someone kills someone while under the influence, MUST the NFL act, if the court sentence isn't enough.

BOTTOM LINE
What should the NFL penalties be for various crimes? And just BTW, what other organizations in our society should have the right to try, convict and punch individuals?

What should the team's penalties be for various crimes? Should all felons be banned for life? Should all who are convicted of any crimes be banned for life.

Apparently, we have moved to a country where private organizations have taken the place of the legislature, police and courts. And the mob decides what actions should be taken. IMHO, this is very, very wrong. At best the NFL and/or teams should suspend with pay, pending court action, and then have clear penalties that DO NOT require their own police force.

The only person who was "lynched" was the 4 year old child. Where was HIS union to protect him? Where was HIS due process?

Adrian Peterson now is away on PAID LEAVE right now until the justice system runs its due process.

Given the evidence in the photographs and his OWN WORDS about the incident, THAT is as it should be.

I fully disagree with anyone who would say that Adrian Peterson should be permanently banned or jailed without getting due process. For everyone's sake, including Adrian Peterson, let's hope it is a timely due process.

1 in every 5 beers sold in the U.S. is a Bud Light.

There's a 20% chance Ray Rice was drinking Bud Light leading up to him hitting his then fiancee.

If he was drinking beer, there's a 20% chance.

Of course, it is quite likely that Mr. Rice was indulging in slightly more expensive beverages.

Hit the nail on the head, IMO. He is doing exactly the wrong thing right now.

In other words, they didn't jump the gun until they received the word that AH was going to be charged with murder, then they cut him right there and then, absorbing a big cap hit.

Don't know how they could have done it any better.
