Vikings RB Adrian Peterson indicted for child abuse; deactivated for Pats game at Minnesota

Somewhat tangentially, the NFL, in the never-ending quest to always find the stupidest possible path, have permanently removed Rhianna (survivor of domestic abuse) from the Thursday Night Football intro.

They probably would have gotten in trouble for playing these lyrics on the air after all that's happened. They were pretty screwed either way. It is sort of humorous to watch them squirm.

Feel it comin' in the air
Hear the screams from everywhere
I'm addicted to the thrill
It's a dangerous love affair
Can't be scared when it goes down
Got a problem, tell me now
Only thing that's on my mind
Is who's gonna run this town tonight...
Is who's gonna run this town tonight...
We gonna run this town

Life's a game but it's not fair
I break the rules so I don't care
So I keep doin' my own thing
Walkin' tall against the rain
Victory's within the mile
Almost there, don't give up now
Only thing that's on my mind
Is who's gonna run this town tonight
Hey-hey-hey-hey-hey-hey
Hey-hey-hey-hey-hey
Hey-hey-hey-hey-hey-hey
(Is who's gonna run this town tonight)
Hey-hey-hey-hey

Let's be clear. No one accused of child abuse should play in the NFL, no matter what sentenced has been served in jail.

What you really mean is that you like a good lynching without the accused having his/her day in court. Sounds about normal these days.

No Rihanna? Oh well, I guess that's 60 seconds I won't have to hold down the FF button on my DVR.

Of course, my remote finger is getting a lot of extra work right now skipping thru Bob Costas pontificating...

With respect to this discussion of separate laws governing different areas of the country, let's take a moment to review the law in the State of Texas with respect to child abuse. This is the exact law under which AP was indicted.

In other words, he was not indicted under a law that would consider him guilty for just any amount of corporal punishment. "Reasonable" discipline was considered and ruled out by the prosecutor.

It's all beginning to make more sense to me why Peterson called Jerry Jones in the offseason to talk about "the future".

So in summation, Rihanna is removed, but Adrian Peterson is practicing with his team today.

Yup.

Confused?

Are you talking about Peterson or Peterson's CHILD not being able to avoid his lynching?

Because it is the 4 year old who has less rights, has no union and can't lawyer up to escape the beating.

Perspective.

Yup.

The NFL has to suspend AP, Hardy and McDonald. They got to save some face here and do it ASAP.

And I think Rihanna was dropped more because she went to Twitter to basically tell Thursday night football to kick sand. She's pissed that they dropped her last week. With thst she's garbage too.

This is not about the legal determination of whether a crime has been committed. Due process must be and will be followed for that. It's about how the individual's employer should proceed given the undisputed evidence that is currently available to the public. Consider...

The Ravens flip-flopped from supporting Ray Rice to cutting him after seeing evidence of the disturbing nature of his behavior (knocking a woman unconscious), even though the legal system had already spoken on the matter.

The Eagles sent Riley Cooper home, fined him and sent him to counseling after seeing evidence of the disturbing nature of his behavior (using racial slurs), even though that behavior was perfectly legal.

In short, the justice system alone rules on criminality, but private entities can make their own determinations of right and wrong.

Now the Vikings have seen evidence of the disturbing nature of Peterson's behavior (beating pre-school aged children until they bleed). They can choose to penalize the player for that documented and acknowledged behavior. Or they can say "eh, no biggie, it might even be technically legal, let's wait and see." But if they take the latter position, they should expect their fans, sponsors and business partners to form their own moral judgments.

The governor of Minnesota has asked the Vikings to suspend Peterson...

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...overnor-calls-on-vikings-to-suspend-peterson/

It is an awful situation,” Dayton said in a statement. “Yes, Mr. Peterson is entitled to due process and should be ‘innocent until proven guilty.’ However, he is a public figure; and his actions, as described, are a public embarrassment to the Vikings organization and the State of Minnesota. Whipping a child to the extent of visible wounds, as has been alleged, should not be tolerated in our state. Therefore, I believe the team should suspend Mr. Peterson, until the accusations of child abuse have been resolved by the criminal justice system.”

Dayton said he remains a Vikings fan, even as he feels disappointment toward the team.

“I will not turn my back on the Vikings and their fans, as some have suggested. The Vikings belong to Minnesota – and in Minnesota. This has been the team’s only home; and our citizens, including myself, have been its most dedicated fans,” Dayton said.

Given the way NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell handled the Ray Rice case, it’s almost impossible to trust Goodell to handle the Peterson case appropriately. Which is one reason that many are calling on the Vikings to take it upon themselves to bench Peterson. Something they’re refusing to do amid severe public pressure.

Welts on his thighs, back, arms, and scrotum. As well as hitting him in the face and, just for fun, stuffing leaves into the kid's mouth.
Did the underlined part really happen? I haven't been paying too close of attention just yet to all of the facts in the case.

Actually it seems to me that Rihanna removed herself from the TNF intro because of her little hissy fit over the fact that they didn't show it last week.

From child #1's account, yes.

"According to police reports, the child, however, had a slightly different story, telling authorities that “Daddy Peterson hit me on my face.” The child also expressed worry that Peterson would punch him in the face if the child reported the incident to authorities. He also said that he had been hit by a belt and that “there are a lot of belts in Daddy’s closet.” He added that Peterson put leaves in his mouth when he was being hit with the switch while his pants were down. The child told his mother that Peterson “likes belts and switches” and “has a whooping room.”

Wow...that is more than creepy. That obviously sounds like some kind of "dominance" thing.

Very strange way to supposedly discipline your children.

He doesn't know any better. That is what he learned growing up. Show him the right way and give him a chance at redemption.

Putting him in jail does not help anybody.

Nunchucks, I agree everyone deserves a chance to get the help that we all deserve to correct or heal whatever is driving them to do what they do and become a better person. I feel this way about Ray Rice, Aaron Hernandez, Adrian Peterson, The guy who killed Adrian Peterson's son or anyone really.

But ultimately you have to pay the price for your actions. I do not support simply punishing the perpetrator. I do support handing down the punishment and offering the person the help they deserve, that we all deserve.

When terrible things happen, I feel sad for the victim. I feel angry with the perpetrator. But I also feel sad for the perpetrator. I wonder what the perpetrator was going thru or struggling with to cause him/her to do such a thing. Maybe if (s)he got the help that (s)he needed early on this all could have been avoided. Nobody is born evil.

That's generally the way I feel about these things. Pay the price for your actions, but also get the help that they deserve to become a better person.

I can't believe the fallout and what is happening here.. what is happening to the NFL??

What's happening is that Goody and the owners wanted to have more control over the players and now that they have it they're fumbling and bumbling around with the responsibility.

Peterson has been a bad boy and needs a whoopin. Let me go get my switch, a 33" Louisville Slugger with a thin handle. That should work.

The Vikings just released this statement from Mark and Zygi Wilf:
This has been an ongoing and deliberate process since last Friday’s news. In conversations with the NFL over the last two days, the Vikings advised the League of the team’s decision to revisit the situation regarding Adrian Peterson. In response, the League informed the team of the option to place Adrian on the Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission list, which will require that Adrian remain away from all team activities while allowing him to take care of his personal situation until the legal proceedings are resolved. After giving the situation additional thought, we have decided this is the appropriate course of action for the organization and for Adrian.

Makes you appreciated how swiftly and decisively Kraft and Belichick moved on Hernandez. Not that they had any choice, but cutting him before he even reached the jail was the smart move.
