Chandler Jones Is a Mediocre Player

The funny thing is the Jets have been trying to convert Quinton Coples to OLB in a 3-4 for over a year. He has his movements of dominance, but he is wildly inconsistence.

Meanwhile, Chandler Jones in the two games he has played OLB (one regular season and one preseason) has been an absolute stud at it. Granted it is a small sample size, but it is clear the Jets drafted the wrong guy.

BTW, people have been talking about the Mankins money better go to Revis. I would say if the money goes to locking up Jones might be a better long term investment. Although I want both.

There are times I regret my lazy maturity. I wish I had written down the names of the posters that have been calling Jones over-hyped.
I'll come clean. I had some harsh criticism for him last season, and there were some pretty hilarious exchanges when the adrenaline was still flowing in those post game threads.

I was so excited for Jones after his first two games as a pro, but maybe it was youthful exuberance and beginner's fortune (I wouldn't say luck). He was slapping lineman around and dominating his matchup every play in a series. After that, he was good, especially on the stat sheet, but he didn't look like he could be 'the guy.' It might be time for me to buy another jersey and hang my Seymour and McGinest jerseys up more often.

Jones should dominate when playing his position. He is bigger and stronger than he has ever been so coaching probably tried him at 3-4 end but realized he is a rush olb in a 3-4. Even though he is very near 270 lbs now he is as fast and athletic as ever and can help in coverage if needed

I stand corrected. Chandler Jones is a beast against subpar Olines only. He completely vanishes against even mediocre Olines - especially if it's an important game.

Chandler your job is to turn it back in, not set the edge then try and duck inside for the tackle just to have the RB bounce outside you and gash us for 10-15 yds a pop. Happened 3 or 4 times last night...

Good Left Tackles not named Nate Solder can handle Chandler Jones easily. Other than that sack he was handled pretty easily and he was pathetic holding the edge. Hightower didn't do much better on one play I thought he got knocked out the FB layed one on him.

Exactly. We are all (myself included) guilty of praising these guys when they haven't done anything against quality opponents. Chandler Jones is a very mediocre player. It's sad that he is our best D lineman.

I appreciate that he was taken off the field last night. Save for the first run by KC and his half-sack, he did absolutely nothing positive.

Chandler Jones is not a mediocre player no matter how you look at it. He isn't consistent enough yet and for some reason he can get blatantly held and never draw a penalty (on his sack last night, Fisher practically ripped his head off grabbing his face mask right in front of the ref with no penalty).

Of all the guys on the team I don't think he deserves to be bashed. Yes he got sucked in time after time and lost the edge but he still has a lot of talent. I think everyone was just confused what the hell was going on. Alex Smith was taking three seconds to find his wide open receivers so often time the rushers didn't have a chance.

disclaimer: I turned it off at the half since I need my sleep

He may not have had a great game, but Chandler Jones is a fine NFL player. He's no JJ Watt, but he's perfectly fine.

Name one good game he has had against a quality opponent.

You mean he's not elite?

With you. I think he's a legit plug and play starting end in this league. Ninkovich however...

He was awfull in both losses. Easily blown of the ball and taken out of run plays 1on1. He is so overrated.

New Orleans last year. A sack, a tackle for a loss, and 7 tackles. Seattle in 2012 - Two sacks, 1 forced fumble, 9 tackles. Denver 2013 - 1 sack, 9 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss

Is three enough?

I'll never understand this. Ninkovich seems to get a bum rap despite being a consistently solid presence. Jones is good, he's not great, and maybe he never will be, but he'll have great games from time to time. A little concerning how the entire Patriots defensive line was handled last night by a makeshift offensive line.

He's not big enough or bad enough to be 'the guy,' but he's still the best we've had in a while. It really doesn't help that our interior d-line is not worth much. Vince looks exactly how you'd expect a heavier guy on the wrong side of 30 coming back from a major injury to look.

If Chandler Jones is mediocre then I'd like a team filled with mediocre players, please. He's a very good player.

Last night against KC however was not his best game. I think he really tried to do too much. He needs to be disciplined. He needs to have trust that if he does what he is supposed to do then his teammates will as well. Last night he didn't. Instead of holding the edge and letting Charles cut it inside he tried to force Charles inside and make the tackle. Which doesn't work against players with as good vision and movement as Charles. He needs to trust the linebackers to make that play on the inside.

But one bad game does not neutralize everything good he has done.
