When this story first broke, it was possible stern parenting was being reported as child abuse.
PATS16N0, this is why the texts are, to me, at least as telling as the photos. A "stern disciplinarian" who has a healthy control of his temper and is trying to instruct rather than inflict harm doesn't find himself, repeatedly, explaining to the mothers of pre-school children why he left them with bloody wounds -- and how it was all the preschoolers' own fault, see what they made him do.
Discipline is about instilling a sense of responsibility. Abuse instills fear, pain and shame, and the belief that you're no good and deserve no better.
