Game Thoughts: Nice Little Bounce Back Week Edition

IDK, the Pats were in their heavy set for most of the game with six linemen. That means they only had two WRs on the field at once. That is why Edelman got so many targets.

Good point. However should they be in a position where the heavy set is not as effective and results in a "lighter" set during the game, I think the passing offense would be more effective with Thompkins on the field.

Looks like he stopped posting after the Pats went up 10-7 and never looked back.

Does that guy ever post in the event of a Pats win? I only see him around here when they are losing/have lost a game. Nevermind, I'm sure he'll be back once the Patriots go 7-9 and Revis leaves to play with a team that has a big armed QB .

To take it one step further, pretty much no team is as good as they looked the week before, and very few teams are quite as bad as they looked the week before.

Just to give some examples---every single prediction I saw this week was for TEN to easily beat DAL. That made absolutely zero sense to me. DAL clearly wasn't as bad as they appeared last week, and TEN certainly wasn't nearly as good as they looked.

The same goes for Miami's big win, and their odds of repeating that on the road + NE's poor showing and the odds of them continuing that disastrous play.

Just because you see it here or on tv, doesn't mean the line reflects it. It's really easy to throw around predictions when there isn't anything on the line.

More concerned with the disappearance of Amendola (19 snaps) which may point to an undisclosed injury. Lafell isn't really an issue as he contributes with "blocking as WR" and in ST as well.

Since Brady is not going to throw to anyone but Edelman or Gronkowski, there's not much point in putting other receivers on the field. Better to use six o-linemen or two backs so you've got people to block long enough for double-team Edelman to come open in the pattern.

Or, just run the ball.

"I'm glad we won ... and, hopefully, we can do better next week." T. Brady

I'll concur with all the good vibes about this win. Also nice to see Allen and special teams have a much better game than last week's fiasco.

I thought some of the long snaps were coming in high this time. The punter probably shouldn't have to work to catch the ball as much as he seems to do. It didn't affect anything in this game, so perhaps I'm nitpicking.

I was watching at work yesterday...did Dobson play? or inactivated yesterday??

Completely disagree with the sentiment that Brady played poorly. This is mercifully a game I'll be able to rewatch, but on the first viewing I made it a point to lock in on the OLine as best I could. And my honest impression was that, in pass blocking at least, they didn't really play that much better than they did last week. So my perspective is that McDaniels/Brady deserve a lot of credit for cooking up a gameplan that anticipated said deficiencies, leaning heavier on the run, and for getting the ball out quick, even in PA situations. I thought they made the absolute most of what was there.

There are lots of reasons for the decline of the Pats pass-heavy Air Belichick offense. At the end of the day, the Pats have to figure out how to win without passing the ball 59 times a game. The passing game is simply not working -- and really hasn't been consistently working for a couple of years.

Just wanted to get some thoughts on Gronkowski. Do you guys think we have seen the best of him. He looks a little slow out there. Does he just need more time to get accustomed to things? Is it realistic to expect 1000 yards and 12 plus TDs this year or next year. I am really worried that not having a true number one receiver is going to really hurt us especially if Gronk does not return to form this year. We need Dobson to breakout

Logan Ryan didn't look very good to me in the exhibition games but he did a super job covering Patterson.
He has an eye for the ball and is not afraid to take a chance for the interception instead of simply permitting
the catch and making the tackle like Arrington.

Was very surprised to see Thompkins deactivated. He appears to be the 2nd most trusted WR of Brady's next to Julian. 22 pass attempts isn't a great sample to judge looks and degree to which guys were open but I can't recall one attempt to Lafell and only one to Amendola. I agree with the above that its Edelman and Gronk with the first looks and I would much rather see Dobson and Thompkins with Lafell sitting regardless of ST role.
I also liked Brady's press conference and the sour demeanor. He said the right things but he was upset which makes me think he and the receivers are going to work their tails off this week.

LaFell was in for blocking. Pretty much every play he was on the field was a run play.

Seems like Gronkowski is right on schedule.

I'm just happy he's back out there, seeing a little bit of action, making a few catches, continuing to recover from ACL surgery. Look at it this way. He's the only receiver Brady will throw to besides Edelman. If Gronk weren't back, Edelman would have to catch all the passes, return all the punts, drive the team bus, and wash the team jerseys after games.

Imagine how bad the passing game would look if Gronk weren't out there to catch 27% of the receptions yesterday.

You are getting very trollish in your posts about how much Brady sucks. Almost every single of your couple dozen posts the last couple of days has been to insinuate in some manner or another just how much Brady sucks.

Brady is not superhuman and deserves a critical eye at times. But what you are insinuating here and in the dozens of other posts like this one is unwarranted, premature and feels way to smarmy.

Dude. We get it. At this point you're just repeating yourself.

Tom Brady's first attempt against the Vikings had, really, one target. One. Nine people threw blocks. Talk about max pro and baby steps.

I mentioned Stanford using "jumbo" OL sets in another thread. They've tried sets with as many as 9 offensive linemen in short yardage situations:

As mentioned in the other thread, Dante Scarnecchia was among those who went out to look at what Stanford was doing.

So, you guys aren't as happy as I am that Gronk is back on the field and taking some snaps? :)

Take a look at the offensive production. It was horrible again yesterday. One TD. Thank god Gronk is working back into game shape.

The good news is that I, personally, think the Pats defense can be good enough to win without much offense as they demonstrated yesterday.
