***Ray Rice---The Whole Video*** [Update: Ravens release Rice]

Goodell says that before Monday the evidence against Ray was rice "ambiguous":

If so, it was only ambiguous because the league found it convenient to let it be so - to allow Rice's fiancee to claim partial responsibility for the incident and Rice's lawyer to float "hypothetical" scenarios without requesting the evidence that would definitively these "ambiguities".

It was convenient for the NFL to overlook the evidence and give Rice a slap on the wrist. Now it's expedient for them to do damage control and throw him under the bus, regardless of the CBA rules.

Maybe Goodell meant "ambidextrous." And he thought it was "bad" only if RR hit her with a left/right combination.

What an embarrassment for the league. TMZ pretty much owned them. Now you have Jerry Boy getting accused of groping women in 2009 right on the tail of this.

and today Goodell sets the stage for a future Ray Rice return to the NFL!

Anyone else see this as simply a desperate ploy to avoid a RR lawsuit for future earnings lost because of inequitable, capricious, publicity driven league office rulings BEYOND the newly stated rules of punishment? Triple damages!

This isn't the time for the league to be discussing it, but Rice will get another chance. Vick, Stallworth, Adam Jones, and Gregg Williams were all allowed back into the league.

He'll miss this year, but, in the offseason, we'll hear about how he has changed and grown, how he has learned about domestic violence and spoken out against it, and some "good guy" associated with the league will champion his reinstatement. The biggest obstacle he might face is if teams think he has really started to lose a step on the field.

Did Ray Rice say something in the last 3 days? I'm short of time to read the whole thread right now.

Well, I at least give Steve Bisciotti credit for accepting that they F'd up and can at least hope that he's sincere. They might have been willful participants, maybe not, but at least he made the first step in accepting blame for their failures. Goodell's goose should be cooked on this though. He is supposed to be the hammer and he was more of a wet blanket on this.

NEW YORK—Following public outcry over his mishandling of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s aggravated assault of his then-fiancée, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Tuesday that the league has adopted a new zero-tolerance policy toward all videotaped domestic abuse. “We hold our players to the highest standards both as professional athletes and as people, so any violence toward women that is recorded, authenticated, and then publicly distributed will be met with an automatic suspension and fine,” said Goodell, adding that the new, stricter guidelines reflect the league’s hard-line stance against any spousal abuse that is clearly and irrefutably captured on film. “I can assure you that any member of this league who strikes a woman in front of a live camera will face swift and heavy consequences. I also want to stress that this utterly reprehensible behavior is something we will in no way tolerate as long as the footage is completely uninterrupted and the entirety of the assault takes place within frame.” Goodell went on to clarify that in such cases, the NFL will cooperate fully with local authorities as soon as the league can no longer prevent incriminating evidence from being leaked to the media.

The National Organization of Women has called for Goodell to resign as Commissioner. The backlash on this is pretty amazing in that it's getting so much notice.. But that is a good thing..

Not gonna go over well with pink ribbon/shoes/whatever month in the NFL this fall

Yup that scumbag of an organization NCAA really did pick a good time to lift the Penn state sanctions. What a piece of crap organization! I hope they rot in hell and suffer a most agonizing and painful death when it's their time to leave this world.

Supposedly A Senator (Heidi Heitkamp - D-MD) has also said that Goodell should consider resigning..

The problem with most of those sanctions is that they were punishing people who had absolutely nothing to do with the offensive behavior. The entire football staff was replaced, and the AD and university president were both fired.

IS Goddell leaving even going to change much? He is just a puppet. Wont they just get someone who will also be a puppet. Probably a puppet who for his first few years on the job will be an uber puppet to make sure his job is safe?

They represented the PSU football team. Anything good or bad that happens to them should affect the entire team no matter if all the people involved are gone. They turned a blindeye and let those kids suffer. Some of them may never be able to heal from it. PSU football team should suffer the consequences.

A huge difference? Maybe not. Objectively bad ideas that the owners are insisting on--18 game season, moving a team to London, using LA as a threat to extort cities out of taxpayer money, etc.--won't go away if Goodell's gone, because they don't come from Goodell in the first place.

But the possibility that the league might actually offer consistent and proportionate response in meting out punishment, independent of public outcry? Well, Goodell has set the bar so low there that even if his successor is picked at random it'll probably be a notable improvement.

Well, my recollection is that both the AD and the university president were involved in an active coverup.
