Jets play at 4PM this week.
Pats play at 1PM this week.

CBS NYC is not showing any 1PM game. This is the norm -- so the Pats basically never show up on Sunday afternoon in NYC cause either the Jets will be playing at the same time, or a game won't be aired.

Is this only a NYC city thing? Or is it typical -- if you live in a market where home team isn't playing at 1 does no game get shown?

I figured it out: NFL rules are that when the home team plays, no other game can be broadcast.
Unfortunately cause there's two home teams in NYC, when one plays at 1, and the other at 4, it means only jets/giants games get shown for the afternoon.

You'd think the NFL would make a NYC exception given theres millions of transplants in manhattan who care about other teams and they're basically losing viewership by not showing less non-local games than other markets show

Giants play in the 1:00 slot, Jets in the 4:00 (or so) slot. No other games can be broadcast in the market. NFL rules. I have no idea why, especially given the explosion of alternative media and Satellite TV.

I have no idea what I'm talking about here, but it might have something to do with local affiliates that simulcast games and have negotiated, through their networks, to limit the competition in the time slot. But I freely admit that I pulled that out of thin air.
I'm sure the answer is floating around somewhere on the internet though.

The San Francisco/Oakland area has a similar situation. End result is that the first and sixth largest television markets get only one early game and one late game, except when one of the teams has a bye or is playing at night.

I've harped about the NFL's policy on no other game being broadcast when the local team is playing at home for a while, but don't expect it to change any time soon. It drives customers to the Sunday Ticket, another revenue stream for the NFL. Whether the fans watch at home (their own personal purchase) or at a sports bar (justifying that business's decision to make that ST purchase), it helps to keep the bid price for the ST high.

In theory the rule is in place to insure that the local team is supported, i.e., that fans don't stay home to watch a better game instead. That may have had some logic back when the policy was first made, which was before the Sunday Ticket, but makes no sense now.

Besides, the team already has the money from the ticket sale regardless of whether I show up or not. Or is it because they are simply greedy and want more money from parking, drink and food sales?

End result is that even though CBS and FOX lose viewers and ratings, the NFL still makes out. And while those two networks do lose out in those markets - and others whenever a team plays at home - they are completely aware of this fact when they bid for the rights to show those games.

Just to clarify, it's when the home team plays at home that the other network can't show a competing game. If the Giants were on the road, CBS could have shown a 1:00 game of their choice.

Thanks; that's makes the rule even stranger; that rule should only apply when the home team hasn't sold out -- otherwise there's no diff between if the team is home or away in terms of how the rest of the at-home viewers approach the viewing of a game.

I agree. I also agree with your statement above about how the NFL basically screws the people in the NY area.

Speaking of stuff that no longer makes any sense in today's current market. The FCC is about to eliminate the blackout policy

NFL is about to lose its fight to save TV blackout rules |Ars Technica

I would LOVE for this to be the case. It would also cut into DirecTV's MLB Extra Innings, NHL Center Ice, and whatever they call the NBA package. I say this because I could then get NESN here in TX and be able to watch the Bruins without having to pay so much extra..

So in a perfect scenario, the Patriots will beat the Vikings then we can sit back and watch Green Bay beat up the Jests....excellent....

I don't think this policy change is going to affect games being blacked out in out-of-market areas.
