The misuse of Chandler Jones week one at Miami

I will have to go back on look at the film, but I am almost positive he lined up inside the tackle rather than outside the tackle as a DE. He was not lined up on the guard like many 3-4 DEs, but he was still inside the line.
We did not play the 34 we used to play. Jones was not playing 2 gap DE head up on the OT.
He played his typically 5 tech DE.
As opposed to a 43, we slid the LDT out over the T (and Wilfork over the C which is common in the 34 anyway). We slid the LBs to strength, and the LOLB was doing the same job as the LDE in the 43.

The reason it's called "5-technique" is because the DE lines up at the 5 spot, which is the outside shade of the tackle. It's impossible for Chandler Jones to have 2 gaps if he's playing 5-tech DE unless the TE comes to his side, which case our SAM LB will come to his side to cover that gap, which means Jones is back to 1 gapping again.

I tried to make a diagram but the formatting keeps breaking.

I understand the five technique, but I remember Jones lining up inside the tackle quite a bit. I admit I may be wrong, but I could have sworn he did.

They would, but he'd just sniff (and you'd hear the snot in his nose) and say that they did what was best for the football team.
If you are lucky maybe Kraft will fire him.

Reiss said the similiar thing about him two gapping (although Reiss isn't the best analyst in the world):

1. The way the Patriots employed Chandler Jones as a 3-4 defensive end makes one wonder if it best maximizes his assets. Jones’ length and pass-rushing skills generally fit best as an end-of-the-line player -- 4-3 defensive end or 3-4 outside linebacker -- yet he was mostly playing 3-4 defensive end in the team’s base package. Knowshon Moreno’s 15-yard run (8:37 remaining) was a good example of how Jones isn’t best suited for the responsibility. On the play, outside linebacker Dont’a Hightower set a nice edge to force the run back inside, but Jones was turned and couldn’t control his gap responsibilities to create the opening for Moreno to surge through. Jones later made a nice play against the run (5:10 remaining), but the feeling from here is that it’s sort of a waste to play him there, almost like moving Darrelle Revis to safety or Jerod Mayo to 3-4 outside linebacker. For a coaching staff that generally gets the most out of its players, and maximizes their skills, this was one thing that was a bit puzzling in the opener (especially given the extensive time to prepare for the game).

There is no need to wonder, it does not maximize his potential, matter of fact it neutralizes him, they tried it last year, it didn't work, and it will not work, Chandler is not JJ Watt, unless he becomes that, than that is not going to work.

Yeah, he should probably go into great detail on how his game plan was structured so other teams can have that information.

That was kind of my point. The original comment I quoted was some guy ripping the media for not asking him questions. We're not going to get anything except snot rockets.

Here's some screenshots I managed to grab of Jones at 3-4 RDE 5technique from the limited amount of film that is out there currently.

The only time he was ever playing inside the Tackle was on 3rd and 5 or longer, which is what we would do in the 4-3 with him anyway.

I took more "stank" in your comment than was probably intended. If so, I apologize.

Here's another formation that is interesting. This is from Moreno's 3rd and goal TD run. We have Wilfork at 5 tech RDE, Siliga at 1 or 3-tech DT (hard to tell from angle, but I think it's 1 tech) and Chandler Jones at 3-tech LDE. We actually get a ton of penetration here but Wilfork takes out Siliga and Mayo trips and falls, ugh. This should have been a tackle in the back field or at worst a tackle at the LOS by Mayo.

Thanks for these screen shots.

IDK, that second photo looks like he could be inside the tackle. Look at where his hand on the ground is in relations to the feet of the TE and the tackle. Jones' hand is about a yard away from the hash mark and the TE's inside foot is only about a half a foot away. Can't really see where the tackle is lined up though, but he looks to be right next to the TE.

Outside shade of T. Pretty clear.

The Pats have given the DC all the tools he needs. If they keep playing like this then the blame should fall squarely on his shoulders. There is no reason they can't be a top 5 defense. If they are not at the end of the season he should be fired.

Only on third downs, which we do with him in the 4-3 anyway.
I'm not even sure they were kicking him inside in those, but there weren't a lot of 3rd and long, which is when we normally do it.

And the lack of 3rd and longs was due to the lack of run defense, which may have been caused by our two most important run defenders (Wilfork and Mayo) playing their first real games in 8 months, and the guy who helped stabilize the situation last year (Siliga) playing his first game back from the wrist injury.

And despite all this, wherever he was lined up, Jones still got several pressures. He negated himself with the penalties. There were a lot of issues on Sunday, but I don't think where Jones was lined up was one of them.

Yup. I only counted a 3rd and 5 (not that long) and a 3rd and 12. We didn't put them in 3rd and long very often because they were getting 5-7 yard runs on 1st down :(
