***Ray Rice---The Whole Video*** [Update: Ravens release Rice]

So Sally Jenkins, a well known and respected sports journalist possesses "no logic" and therefore YOUR precious Goody and the NFL are completely innocent of everything?
I'd call this an appeal-to-authority logical fallacy but it's not even that since Sally Jenkins can't even be considered an authority. But if you want to hang your hat on the mediot du jour, feel free.

There is no logic in the belief that says Ray Rice's attorney had a copy of the tape, therefore the NFL would have had a copy of the tape. Rice's attorney is entitled to the evidence against his client, the NFL is not. And since the evidence is pretty damning, Rice's attorney would have been among the first people unwilling to share it with the league.

The NFL, understanding the existence of such a tape, and given the contract signed by Rice and all players, could have requested a review of the tape prior to confirming a penalty. "You are suspended until you show us the tape." Given that the player had the tape, it's hard to argue that they couldn't get it.

At least Aaron never hit his girl :)

The elevator security people would have it as well as the facilities lawyers. Easy enough for it to be sold quietly.

I'm still interested in the cap ramifications and whether or not the Ravens are being treated differently than the other 31 teams.

That's not a bad idea. Of course, I'm not arguing what the NFL should have done, I am arguing what they did do.

I think what happened behind closed doors is the victim herself made an impassioned plea for leniency. I find it pretty ironic that all this mad furor to punish Rice is also indirectly punishing the victim since now she has an unemployed husband.

That's exactly what happened, with the buyer being TMZ. However, I think if the NFL "bought" evidence against a player, that would open a whole 'nother can o' worms.

Merged: Ray Rice Video and Release - Page 50 - Ravens Talk - Ravens Official Message Board

Baltimore Forums, started it at page 50, for your perusal.

EDIT:

"A three-time Pro Bowl pick who helped Baltimore to a Super Bowl title in the 2012 season, Rice had three years remaining on the five-year contract he signed with the Ravens in July 2012. His $4 million base salary for this season wasn't guaranteed, but the Ravens will carry $14.25 million in cap hits over the next two seasons."

Cut from USA today story.

Rotoworld:
11. Baltimore Ravens
Available Cap Space — $24,425,100

The salary cap’s $10 million increase and the report of a potential $150 million cap by 2016 is great news for all teams. But it’s especially important for Baltimore due to the way franchise QB Joe Flacco's contract is structured. Forward-thinking GM Ozzie Newsome, who has already saved approximately $5 million in cap room this offseason with the releases of Jameel McClain and Vonta Leach, can now more confidently use his available cap space to fill current roster holes.

One thing I find very noteworthy from the article is that Mortensen had very specific information from his source(s), that turned out to be correct. Specifically, consider the portion about Janay Palmer hitting her head on the railing in the elevator.

To me, since the source knew that specific detail, that sounds like Mortenson's source was being truthful; that in turn would mean that the NFL had indeed seen the video that TMZ released today.

Once again, here is what Mortensen said back on July 26:

“I’m told by numerous sources — or, a few good sources — that the video from inside the elevator, which we’ve never seen, shows Janay surely attacking Ray, so he’s in a confined area. But still, what they tell you to do, is get away from it or restrain. You can restrain her, but you can’t deliver a punch, an uppercut, which Ray allegedly did inside that elevator. I’m told that Janay hit her head on the railing. That would seem to justify a pretty severe sanction.”

Although he distances himself and covers his butt by saying that he can't say with 100% surety that the NFL did see the video, how else can one explain his source providing the details that were later verified on the video?

Condi Rice: The one person who could save the NFL - The Washington Post

"
That Goodell is an unduly vain commissioner, and a self-serving one with his eye on some further prize, has always been obvious. That he obfuscates and evades on tough issues unless they are convenient for him, that his convictions are highly selective and so is his enforcement, has never been more apparent. On Monday morning, with the surfacing of that video, Goodell’s nature became totally clear. The NFL claims in a statement that no one in the league office had seen the tape before. That is almost surely not the truth, unless the NFL wanted it that way. This is a league that works with Homeland Security, confers with the Drug Enforcement Agency, collaborates with law enforcement and has its own highly equipped and secretive private security arm. You’re telling me it couldn’t get ahold of a grainy tape from an Atlantic City casino elevator? But TMZ could?

If NFL executives and Baltimore Ravens staff had never seen that tape before, there are only two reasons: willful blindness, and the determination to maintain plausible deniability…. Ray Rice’s own attorney had a copy of it. It simply defies belief that league and team officials couldn’t have seen it if they wanted to."

well, it'll all blow over...nothing to see here...except my huge unit and all my trophy girlfriends who I throw out with the trash when they assault me...

Blood in the water... Who'd have guessed that Condi Rice was one of the sharks?

She's a big football fan and is on the NCAA national championship playoff seeding selection committee. She made it known long ago she'd like to be NFL commissioner. She probably would do a better job than Badell.

Ray Rice video: TMZ says they have proof NFL knew about video, but 'turned a blind eye' to it | NJ.com

Just to be clear, TMZ isn't saying that the league saw the video before issuing the initial punishment. They're saying that they NFL knew about the video (and presumably that they had the means of obtaining it) and chose to turn a blind eye. Not as bad, although still really bad and proof that Goodell should be wearing clown shoes to work.

That's plenty bad. If there's substance to the new TMZ report and it holds up to reasonable scrutiny, this will absolutely rock the power structure in the NFL. This puts Commissioner Blockhead in very deep yogurt. Further, if it can be shown that the Ravens had the video or knew about it and took no action, the owner, GM and coach may well find themselves in over their heads as well.

Potentially the biggest scandal in NFL history ...

There's a pretty good chance that Jenkins' article is not just her opinion, but a trial balloon. If true, it would be interesting to know just who is floating this particular balloon ...

If there was a tag cloud for this thread it would read "Roger Goodell" "Abusing" "Small" and "Pee Pees". The internet is a delightfully bizarre place.

Well, that's it. I've officially started my boycott.
