The agitated Post-Game thread

The first half the Offense was pretty creative and looked good.

The second half was the polar opposite, it's like they thought the game was won and they switched to a vanilla offense so the league didn't see everything in week one. Horrible idea but that's how it looked.
THIS.gif

The offense in the second half got me like a high school kid telling my manager at McDonald's : More shifts please!

Belichick and McDaniels deserve a lot of the blame for today. Not double teaming Cameron Wake is a head scratcher. Even more so, they didn't make adjustments when it was clear the OT's couldn't handle the outside pass rush.

Dink n dunk passing game. Every year we embarrass some teams with it and look very impressive while doing so. But then it gets completely shut down against better defenses. Today it worked for the first half, and then the Dolphins made adjustments to shut it out in the 2nd half. It looked too easy for Miami to stop, and their 3 starting LB's weren't even playing in the 2nd half. This is very worrying. The passing game hasn't evolved in the past couple years, and if anything, it's devolved since the glory days of the 2-TE sets a couple years back.

Edelman, Amendola, Thompkins, LaFell, are all possession receivers. All short-to-intermediate route runners. Defenses can stack the box and not have to worry about the deep ball. None of them are burners. None of them can consistently beat their guy one on one. None of them command any respect from a defense. The latter 3 don't make much happen after the catch.

Brady's arm strength and deep ball at this point in his career are suspect. I hope we can write it off as week 1 jitters, but it showed a lot last year too. He missed an open deep ball to Edelman late in the game. At times he was throwing to nobody. Was it miscommunication, or fearing the pass rush?. Either way its not a good sign. I suspect BB and McDaniels know Brady's arm strength is declining and that's why they're forced to run a dink and dunk offense.

The OLine obviously deserves a lot of blame, but good QB's aren't supposed to be as scared under pressure as Brady was today. Brady used to be poised and resilient. I didn't see any of that today. Some of the latter throws in the game looked like he was just getting rid of the ball and not even trying.

Where was the run game in the 2nd half? OLine once again takes blame here, but Ridley isn't who we thought he was in 2012. He can't create anything on his own. and of course, McDaniels completely abandons the run when Brady starts getting killed.

Gronkowski is obviously not 100% yet. He might be physically, but he isn't mentally. He wasn't confident and wasn't on the same page as Brady. He looked scared of getting injured again. I think he'll be fine in a few weeks as he gets more comfortable out there. Gronk's health will absolutely be the key to this offense. Brady locking onto Gronk and forcing the ball to him was bad. He did that last year when Gronk first returned, but it worked itself out after a few weeks. Gronk is the only guy on offense who commands a double team. With out him making an impact, we're screwed.

Aaron Dobson can be another difference maker. His progression is vital. He's our only WR who has potential to be a true #1 option. Last year he wasn't ready for the spotlight. He'll have to improve and step up big time for this offense to get anywhere.

I'd also like to note how the commentators were saying the Pats should "take a shot down field", and the very next play Brady threw a deep pass to Edelman for 44 yards. It worked out this time, but it's alarming when McDaniels play calling has become so predictable that even the commentators are on the same wavelength as him. You have to think, if the commentators are predicting our plays then opposing coaches and players will too.

You are right on about Brady's arm strength. I ask anybody to re-watch this game and compare Tannehill's out routes to Brady's. It is night and day. Anything over 10 yards, and Brady's ball just floats. At this point, it's less about the outside WRs (even though they aren't very good) and more about Brady's inability to get them the ball with velocity. His throws downfield were hard to watch. I have questions about Garroppolo's arm strength as well, but there is a reason he was drafted. Brady is easy to defend because the area in which he's effective is very small. Even the 44 yard throw to Edelman was embarrassingly weak.

Please do. I've got 7-9. Before the season I had 9-7. In an era of speed kills on offense and defense, the Pats put together one of the slowest teams in the NFL. In the game yesterday, the speed difference looked like varsity vs. JV.

As you wish.

I disagree that McDaniels and Belichick didn't make adjustments. The adjustments didn't work. Hooman was in the game a lot in the second half blocking and he got turnstiled a few times and whiffed on one block all together.

People incorrectly think the Pats don't do adjustments. They do all game long. When they work, the coaching staff gets no credit. When they don't, they get all the blame.

The Pats had a lot of games last year where the offense struggled in the first half and won the game in the second half because of adjustments and play on the field. So it clear that the Pats can and do make good adjustments in games.

I did not think Belichick and McDaniels (or Patricia) had a good game coaching, but to put all (or most) the blame at their feet is silly. I actually think that they did too much adjusting on offense. They were mixing and matching the o-line way too much yesterday. They need to pick five guys and let them get some continuity.
I totally agree. I think that was their way to beat the heat. But they never got in sync. This team is too young to have that kind of chemistry.

First half O I though was fine...but second half they took everyone away.

The Jones one was a joke. No other way to put it.

I don't know what game people were watching to give special teams a grade of C or better yesterday but what I saw from that group yesterday was hot garbage.

Maybe it's just me but I think the seat under Ryan Allen is a little warmer today than it was yesterday..

Strange I thought Brady was the one being pampered by the league according to the other fan bases. Brady got hit like 100 times with no flag, Tannehill gets a flag on like all 3 times he gets hit...
While we appreciate an accurate observation, the rest of the world doesn't want to hear it. But, that is why we are all hear (to talk to similar minded folks). The media machination is definitely stacked against us and while we'd be called homers, they also suffer from confirmation bias.

i bet if you polled the players, 60% (or more) would incorrectly call the Carson Palmer rule, the Brady rule.

poll the general football fan and I would say 95% (or more) would get the rule incorrectly.

I am not even that concerned about Revis or the secondary. Miami's best receiver is Wallace so they had to throw to him a few times.

BB never address the offense:

Julian Edelman: Edelman is good but on no planet should he be considered a #1 receiver on any team.
Brandon Lawful: Had three offensive PI calls on him in one game. Never seen that before.
Danny Amendola: Amendola either cannot stay healthy or is a non factor when he is playing.
Aaron Dobson/Kenbrell Thompkins: completely underwhelming players. It's a shame that Brady is stuck
with these guys the last few years of his career.

Gronk: Good player but we will see if he makes it though whole season:

Wright: Unproven player that Tampa was not high on.

So more or less Brady has Edelman and Gronk and five other below average players to thow to. Brady does not even have time to throw to these guys either because people were getting through the 0-line like they were wet paper bags.

Brady's arm strength is fine. He was not good yesterday but it wasn't because of arm strength. When Brady's arm strength goes, you'll know. It will be that obvious.

With that said what was the deal with Brady's eephus lobs? I don't remember him throwing like that...

Lets give Allen at least another week before we start calling to cut anyone.
Does anybody think Miami's secondary is as good as they looked?
I certainly don't difference was the up front pressure and I think the most damming thing about yesterday was how flat this team looked.
You can say it was the heat but something was off.
Once Brady started getting pressured the shots I saw on video was Brady sitting with his head down vs talking to his team amping them up lighting a fire under his team.
The most haunting thing was this is while we were ahead I remember a few years ago we talked about body language on this board well.
I want to see this team rally around each other and when it's hot and their tired and it looks hopeless play with attitude play with confidence.
That's why I'm again advocating bringing in incognito for at least a sit down he plays with anger and a mean steak that was missing from this o line.
No offensive lineman were wound up that Brady was getting hit.
They should of been out there avenging the QB.
I think this team needs to play with more fire and we will be fine.
We can talk about play calls and execution but there was no fire in the second half it was like they conceded to defeat before it was close to over.

I've seen the Patriots play bad games where they just shot themselves in the foot and you knew they were better than that...yesterday was troubling because I watched them and said, this is a bad team. I can't tell if they're going to be good because they just didn't pass the eye test. They just looked bad. I hope they get it together because there were very few times that felt like they were clicking...maybe the first scoring drive but beyond that, even in the first half, there were some troubling signs of things to come in the second half even with the couple of turnovers in NE's favor. I didn't think yesterday would happen but the second half was about as bad as I've seen them in a long time.

It was that obvious yesterday. Tannehill is not a guy known as having a cannon, but the difference between the two was night and day.

That's how guys with minimal arm strength throw the ball downfield. Remember Chad Pennington's deep throws. That is 2013-2014 Tom Brady. His lack of arm strength makes him too easy to defend. There is a reason we took a QB in the 2nd.

They looked slow. You can't fix that.

I think what you saw was a QB who knows his skills have eroded, and a team that knows it too. Immobile weak armed QBs don't inspire anyone.

Our offense line was a disaster today, and no its not just because we didnt have mankins, Brady had people in his face from all over the field all game

Our defensive line can't stop the run to save its life

What the hell happened to our special teams? we had issues all preseason and the very first punt of the season gets blocked.

Wait, are the patriots not allowed to tackle anymore? all i see are guys karate chopping the dolphins, WRAP someone THE FUNK up. holy christ.

Chandler jones might be one of the highest yardage dolphins today, he had i want to say 3 personal fouls for 15 yards each

Why is someone not named revis covering wallace?

Brady I know you want to get super excited when you throw a td, but how about you stop ****ing punching people in the helmet? your hands are kind of important.

Brady had some accuracy issues early on, but after smacking gronks helmet i don't think he completed more then 2 passes in a row, tons of ducks, lots in the ground, just fell apart, and i wouldn't be surprised to hear he hurt himself.

Stop forcing it to a double covered gronk

Where is amendola? Where is Dobson?

If Riddley cant be a between the tackles runner then he needs to go, I seriously cant stand any more of these end around runs for a 1 yard loss, the only time he has a good run is when there are penalties involved.

Jesus Riddley is a laibility blocking, He whiffed so bad on wake it nearly got brady killed.

Huge wasted opportunity against a hurt dolphins team that gave up three early turn overs.

Incredibly frustrating game

Probably should cancel the preorder on those superbowl tickets, because the team that played today is not a superbowl caliber team.

Moreano manhandled the patriots.
I think Ninko was responsible for the blocked punt. I'm not certain I understand why you blame Ryan.
Revis did fine on Wallace, he's not superhuman and the other guy wins some times.
I didn't agree with the refs on the roughing the passer calls, not surprised, I'm a homer.
Dobson was IA. Can't get open in the stands.
Ridley didn't whiff on Wake, Hooman never touched Wake, looked like Ridley was going to the flat and tried to grab Wake when he saw him running free.
Damaging sacks came from offensive tackles and tight ends.
Vellano and Easley were disappointing.
That Moreno guy is pretty good.
Last but not least, the Pats always lose a game in Miami, their worst performances have been there. they will be ok.

Arm strength is not seen in how you throw downfield, it's seen in how you throw darts to the short and intermediate field to your target so defenders can't react and get to the football or the receiver. If Brady really had no arm strength he would have been picked at least 5 times yesterday.

Like I said when it goes, you'll know. Based on the things he's been saying I suspect once that happens his retirement speech will be imminent.

No idea what the deal was with the lobs but I know I've never seen him throw like that.

Arm strength shows when you throw outside the numbers. He can't do that anymore.

I hope Bill is thinking about bringing in Incognito

PLay calling in the second half was arrogant and abysmal. Hey we are struggling to move the ball at all and getting killed by Wake....lets dial up the screen to Bolden!(how did he even make this team) Not giving any help and adjusting was ridiculous.

Our tackling was a joke made me miss Spikes.

Someone call Tommy Kelly up please.

It looks like our D and O hasnt changed a thing in years.

Second half incredibly hard to watch...

What gets me the most is nobody seemed to care I saw almost no fire and where is the leadership on the defense that was effing embarrassing what Moreno did on that TD run.
